Andreas Lowenfeld

Andreas Frank Lowenfeld (born  May 30, 1930 in Berlin ; †  June 9, 2014 in New York City ) was an American lawyer who worked in the field of international law and was professor at New York University from 1967 to 2009 . In recognition of his work, he was accepted into the Institut de Droit international , among others , and was awarded the Manley O. Hudson Medal .

Life

Andreas Lowenfeld was born in Berlin in 1930 as the son of a couple of doctors of Jewish descent and emigrated with his parents to the United States via Prague , where he obtained an AB degree in history in 1951 and a Bachelor of Laws from Harvard University four years later . After his admission as a lawyer and military service from 1955 to 1957 in the United States Army , he initially worked in private practice in New York until 1961 . He then worked until 1966 in the State Department of the United States and in 1966/1967 as a Fellow at the John F. Kennedy Institute of Politics at Harvard University.

From 1967 he was professor at the law faculty of New York University , including from 1981 to 1994 Charles L. Denison Professor and from 1994 until his retirement in August 2009 Herbert and Rose Rubin Professor of International Law . In 1979 and 1994 he also lectured at the Hague Academy for International Law . He has also been involved in several international arbitration proceedings . The focus of his legal work was international business law , aviation law and international private law .

Andreas Lowenfeld was married from 1962 until his wife's death in April 2014 and was the father of a son and a daughter.

Awards

Andreas Lowenfeld had been a member of the Institut de Droit international since 1989 and in 2007 received the Manley O. Hudson Medal, the highest honor of the American Society for International Law .
