Bruno Simma

Bruno Eckard Simma (born March 29, 1941 in Qui Various ) is a German - Austrian international lawyer . From 1973 to 2006 he was a professor at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and from 2003 to 2012 he was a judge at the International Court of Justice .

Life

Simma completed his law studies with a doctorate at the University of Innsbruck in 1966 and then took up an assistant position at the Innsbruck Law Faculty. In 1973 he was appointed to the chair for international law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he retired in 2006 .

Simma was also active in the German diplomatic training and was a visiting professor at the University of Siena and the University of Michigan Law School as well as a lecturer at the Hague Academy for International Law . He has been a member of the International Sports Court since 1984 . From 2003 to 2012 he was a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague .

In January 2012, Simma, together with the French international lawyer Gilbert Guillaume and the British lawyer Vaughan Lowe , was appointed by Slovenia and Croatia as a mediator in the arbitration tribunal to resolve their border dispute. Both parties had previously been presented with a list of possible candidates by the European Union .

On November 5, 2012, effective December 1, 2012, Simma was appointed member and chairman of the 1st Chamber of the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal .

On February 4, 2013, he was appointed chairman of a five-member court of arbitration under the Convention on the Law of the Sea . Together with Aun Schaukat al-Chasauneh , Elsa Kelly , Thomas A. Mensah and Bernard H. Oxman , he should decide on a dispute under maritime law between Argentina and Ghana .

Simma serves as Costa Rica's nominated ad hoc judge at the International Court of Justice in the case of Maritime Delimitation in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua) .

He is a member of the Presidium of the German Society for the United Nations .

Bruno Simma is married to Maria Simma.
