Ulrich Fastenrath

Ulrich Fastenrath (born April 24, 1949 in Oldenburg ) is a German legal scholar .

His main research interests are public law with special consideration of European and international law as well as the theoretical foundations of this law and understanding of the state with the interdisciplinary inclusion of linguistics, philosophy and political science. Since 1993 he has held the professorship for public law, European law and international law at the TU Dresden .

Career

After graduating from high school in 1967 and completing basic military service in 1969, Fastenrath began studying law . He completed this at the universities of Frankfurt am Main , Tübingen , Lausanne and Marburg . In 1974 he passed the first state examination in law and between 1974 and 1976 worked as a trainee lawyer in Kassel, Marburg and Bonn. In 1976 the second state examination followed and a year later Fastenrath became a research assistant at the Institute for International Law at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . The legal scholar held this post until 1988; During this time he received his doctorate in 1985 as Dr. iur. and completed his habilitation in 1988.

Between 1988 and 1989 Fastenrath took over professorships at the universities in Augsburg , Tübingen and Frankfurt am Main, and in 1989 he became professor for public law, international law and European law at the University of Cologne . After being on leave of absence from 1991 and 1992 for visiting professorships at the Universities of Potsdam , Berlin (Humboldt University) and a deputy professor at the European University Viadrina , he accepted a professorship for public law, European law and international law at the Technical University in 1993 Dresden. There the legal scholar was vice dean and dean of studies of the law faculty (1996–1997) and dean of the law faculty (2000–2003) and in 2002 became a member of the Center for International Studies at the university. Between 2004 and 2005 he carried out research and teaching activities in the United States , served as a Senior Emile Noel Fellow at New York University and held visiting professorships at the University of Michigan and Tulane University . After his return to the TU Dresden, he was again Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law from 2006 to 2009 and in 2008 became Scientific Director of the Center for International Studies .

Ulrich Fastenrath has been a senior professor at the Technical University of Dresden since 2014 .
