John Reese Stevenson

John Reese Stevenson (born  October 24, 1921 in Chicago , Illinois , †  October 26, 1997 in Fort Worth , Texas ) was an American lawyer . From 1950 to 1992 he worked as a lawyer in the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell , which he headed from 1979 to 1987. He was also President of the American Society for International Law from 1966 to 1968 , Legal Adviser to the US State Department from 1969 to 1972 , Member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights from 1988 to 1990, and President of the National Gallery of Art from 1978 to 1993 .

Life

John Reese Stevenson was born in Chicago in 1921 and studied at Princeton University , where he received an AB degree in 1942 . After four years of service in the United States Navy , he also earned an LL.B. degree from Columbia University in 1949 and a doctorate three years later . After he was admitted to the bar , he worked for the law firm Sullivan & Cromwell from 1950 to 1992 , where he was a partner from 1956 and served as its president from 1979 to 1987.

From 1969 to 1972 he served as Legal Adviser to the United States Department of State . In this role he took part in the diplomatic conference at which the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties was negotiated and adopted. As special representative of the President of the United States with the rank of Ambassador , he also headed the delegation from his home country to the third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea from 1973 to 1975 , which later led to the conclusion of the Convention on the Law of the Sea . From 1966 to 1968 he served as President of the American Society for International Law , which awarded him its highest distinction in 1997 with the Manley O. Hudson Medal . Between 1988 and 1990 he was a member of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights .

In addition, John Reese Stevenson was a trustee of Texas Christian University and the National Gallery of Art , where he was president from 1978 to 1993. He had his first marriage from 1943 and his second marriage after the death of his wife from 1983 and father of four children. In 1997 he died in Fort Worth .
