Dungarpur ( Hindi : डूंगरपुर , Ḍūṅgarpur ) is a city with almost 48,000 inhabitants (2011 census) in the Indian state of Rajasthan . It is the capital of the district of the same name .

Dungarpur, also known as the "city of hills", was founded in the 13th century and was the capital of the former princely state of Dungarpur . From the historic old town, surrounded by still intact defensive walls, located high on a mountain, only archaeological remains can be seen, while the new city spreads out in the valleys. Due to its numerous blue colored houses, the city is often compared to the Indian city of Jodhpur .

Haweli Juna Mahal

The ruins of the old Maharaja's palace from the 14th century, the Haweli Juna Mahal with its wall paintings, are worth seeing . The newer Maharaja's palace from the 19th century was partially converted into a hotel, Udai Bilas Palace , and with its location on the lake itself is a sight of the place. The family of the earlier Maharajas still live in a wing of the palace.
