David Samanez Ocampo
David Samanez Ocampo y Sobrino (* 1866 in Huambo, Andahuaylas Province , † July 13, 1947 in Lima ), Peruvian businessman and politician, was President of his country from March 11 to December 8, 1931.
Samanez was the son of a large landowner. He made a name for himself as an opponent of the dictatorial ruling President Augusto B. Leguía and tried in 1910 as a parliamentarian to gain control of the city of Cusco in an uprising .
After Leguías was ousted in 1930, several presidents took turns in quick succession without the unrest in the country ending. In the meantime, Samanez had earned a national reputation and was seen as having integrity; on March 11, 1931 he took over the presidency from Gustavo Jiménez, who was in office for six days . Immediately after taking office, Samanez called for presidential elections and the election of a constituent assembly.
Samanez reinstated civil liberties, the parties reorganized and secret elections were introduced. After the elections on October 11th, he handed over the office to the election winner Luis Miguel Sánchez Cerro on December 8th .
