Susanne Bier (born April 15, 1960 in Copenhagen ) is an award-winning Danish director . Among other things, her film In a Better World received the Oscar for best foreign language film in 2011 .

life and work

Susanne Bier's Jewish father, Rudolf Salomon Bier, fled to Denmark from the German National Socialists as a child . Her mother is the Danish Henni Jonas. After graduating from high school, she studied art at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and architecture at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London. She graduated from the National Film School of Denmark in Copenhagen in 1987 with a degree in film directing. Her graduation film De saliges ø received an award at the International Festival of Film Schools in Munich that same year.

After directing music videos , commercials and first feature films, Bier made her breakthrough in her home country with The Only Right One (1999). The comedy about two befriended couples who decide to fulfill their dream of having children was awarded the Danish Bodil Film Prize. Bier also made two Dogma films: Open Hearts , for which she received her first international recognition, and Brothers - Zwischen Brüdern , whose screenplay she wrote with Anders Thomas Jensen , who later also wrote the screenplay for Biers' drama After the Wedding .

In 2006 Bier should direct two Hollywood films. Chasing Montana about the relationship of a father to his daughter, both doctors, with Michelle Pfeiffer in the lead role, was not realized. With the British-American production Things we Lost in the Fire (German title Eine neue Chance ), the first English-language film Biers was made, a drama about the difficult relationship between a young mother and the drug-addicted boyfriend of her shot husband, Halle Berry and Benicio del Toro in the lead roles.

In 2008, Bier was appointed to the competition jury at the 58th Berlin Film Festival . However, she was unable to take up the position as a member of the jury because of the preparations for a film in the USA .

In 2010 Bier shot another family drama based on a screenplay by Anders Thomas Jensen: In a Better World , a story about two boys who are not understood by their parents and who build a bomb. The film with Markus Rygaard , William Jøhnk Nielsen , Mikael Persbrandt , Trine Dyrholm and Ulrich Thomsen won the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar in 2011 , each in the category of best foreign language film . In addition, Bier was the first woman to be awarded the European Film Prize for best director.

In 2013, Bier was appointed to the competition jury at the 63rd Berlin International Film Festival . In 2018 she was appointed jury president of the section for VR films at the 75th Venice International Film Festival .

Bier often works with the cameraman Morten Søborg and the film editor Pernille Bech Christensen , whom she has known and appreciated since their time together at the film school.

Susanne Bier is the mother of a son (* 1989) and a daughter (* 1995). She lives in Copenhagen.
