Bird Box - Close your eyes is a horror thriller by Susanne Bier that was released on December 21, 2018 on the streaming service Netflix . The film, set in a post-apocalyptic time, is based on the novel of the same name by Josh Malerman from 2014.

action

The film has two time levels that alternate again and again: the events in a house to which some survivors have fled, and the five years later Malorie journey with two children.

Malorie, a pregnant artist with binding fears , travels with her sister Jessica to a check-up. You have previously heard in the media about global mass suicides. Panic breaks out after the examination. People suddenly kill themselves, Jessica is also attacked and is deliberately run over by a truck. Malorie manages to escape to a nearby house with others. Beside her, the supermarket clerk Charlie, the elderly lady Sheryl, the drug dealer Felix, the police trainee Lucy, the war veteran Tom, the cynical lawyer Douglas, whose wife died trying to rescue Malories, and Greg, the owner of the house, were able to save themselves. Charlie suggests that the phenomenon could be demons who drive people crazy through eye contact. The residents of the house decide to close the windows from view. After a while, the pregnant Olympia comes to them.

Homeowner Greg is attacked while attempting to use the surveillance cameras to probe the area and dies. When supplies run low in the house, five members of the group drive in Greg's darkened car to the supermarket where Charlie works using the navigation system. In the supermarket you will find plenty of supplies, radios and other items. They also take a bird cage with birds, as Malorie discovers that birds sense the presence of the “demons” earlier than humans. You hear one of Charlie's colleagues panicking as he asks to be admitted. However, the group realizes that something is wrong. The man wants to push himself in, whereupon Charlie pushes him out and ends up outside himself, whereupon he perishes. The return to the house succeeds. Soon after, Lucy and Felix take the car and disappear into the unknown.

Olympia lets the stranger Gary into the house without consulting. He claims he was attacked by inmates of a mental hospital for violent prisoners who survived blindfolded but tried to force everyone else to look at the demons. However, he escaped. The suspicious Douglas takes up a gun and demands that Gary leave the house. The others are against it and Douglas is locked in the garage.

On the same day, Malorie gave birth to a son and Olympia to a daughter with the help of Tom and Sheryl. Gary is acting increasingly strangely: he spreads sketches of the creatures on the table, puts the birds in the refrigerator, tears the newspapers from the windows and knocks Tom down. Gary goes to the two mothers and pulls the screen off the windows. Olympia and Sheryl are then killed. Malorie manages to protect the children and herself with a blanket. Gary tries to expose Malorie and the babies to daylight, but is shot by Douglas, who has to aim blindly. Gary kills Douglas, but is eventually shot by the reawakened Tom.

Tom and Malorie are now the only surviving adults in the house and fall in love. Malorie does not give the children any names and only calls them "boy" and "girl". They live in the house for five years and raise the children. It is gradually becoming more difficult to get supplies from the supplies in the surrounding houses. In addition, the possessed mentally ill are a danger.

After five years they received a radio message from a man named Rick telling them that in two days they could cross the river to a community of survivors where they would be safe. Malorie is skeptical, but Tom wants to dare this journey. Shortly thereafter, armed men and women arrive at the house. A firefight ensues in which Tom kills all but one of the attackers. He can only pursue the last attacker by removing the blindfold and is attacked. With his last willpower, however, he manages to kill him before he shoots himself.

Malorie goes on a trip with the two children in a rowboat. They also take the birds with them in a box, which the film title alludes to. In the meantime, they meet one of the possessed, but Malorie can fend off with a machete. They later collide with a truck lying in the river. In the process, they lose important equipment, so Malorie goes to a nearby house to find a replacement. Meanwhile, the girl leaves the boat, but Malorie can bring her back. After almost two days they reach the rapids that Rick had told them about. There she had planned that one of the two children would have to remove the blindfold as a navigation aid. However, Malorie cannot bring herself to possibly sacrifice one of the two children and instead decides to drive through blindly. The boat capsizes, but Malorie finds the children one by one. They hear the birds that Rick told them about too.

Ghostly voices demand that their blindfolds be removed on the way to their destination. In the meantime, Malorie loses the children, but can find them again. You will come to a house which houses a school for the blind and in which there are many other survivors. In an enclosed outdoor area with countless birds, Malorie names the two children Tom and Olympia.

production

The film is based on a post-apocalyptic debut novel of the same name by Josh Malerman , the singer of the band The High Strung , from 2014. Malerman tells the story in it through flashbacks and lets it play in different time periods.

Just like in the novel, the film never explains where the monsters come from and what exactly they want. Markus Fiedler von Filmstarts explains : "But just like in A Quiet Place , the threat primarily serves as a metaphorical catalyst to reflect on the idea of family and parenthood."

Sandra Bullock stars in the lead role of Malorie. In October 2017 it was announced that John Malkovich and Danielle Macdonald can be seen in additional roles.

Filming started in October 2017.

The film music was composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of ten pieces of music, was made available as a high-res download in December 2018. The complete album should also be available in full from January 25, 2019 on the popular streaming providers.

A first trailer was published in mid-October 2018. The film premiered on November 12, 2018 at the AFI Fest . Netflix secured the rights to the film, where it has been shown since December 21, 2018. In addition, the film is to come in selected US cinemas.
