The VES Awards are a distinction given by the Visual Effects Society (VES) for outstanding work on visual effects . Since 2002 films , series , advertising and computer games as well as the artists who have worked on them have been awarded annually in different categories .

Outstanding visual effects in a photorealistic feature film

The main category Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature was originally called Best Visual Effects in an (Visual) Effects Driven Motion Picture and changed to its current name in 2015.

The award goes to photo-realistic feature films (i.e. no animation films ) in which visual effects are visible, essential and an important part of the plot.

Outstanding visual effects as support in a photorealistic feature film

The Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature award honors invisible or almost invisible visual effects in feature films. These serve to support the film and the plot and should remain unrecognizable to the untrained eye. The current award winner is Deepwater Horizon .
