Sansa is traumatized by the news of her brother and mother's deaths. Tyrion tries in vain to comfort her, with Shae becoming jealous. The wedding of Joffrey and Margaery is approaching. Doran Martell, Prince of Dorne, has also been invited, but his younger brother Oberyn Martell appears in the capital in his place. In the north, Ramsay, illegitimate son of Lord Roose Bolton, passes the time with sadistic hunting games on people. Theon, mentally broken and physically derelict, accompanies him all the time. Lord Bolton arrives soon after in Grauenstein, the ancestral seat of his house. He accuses Ramsay of Theon's condition, as he wanted to use him as a bargaining chip against Lord Balon Greyjoy. Ramsay tells Roose Bolton that Bran and Rickon Stark are still alive and, as long as they are, the Bolton rule in the north is in danger. Lord Bolton orders Locke to hunt the strong children. Ramsay, in turn, is supposed to drive the iron men from the strategically important place Moat Cailin (in the German version "Maidengraben"), otherwise the Bolton army would not be able to return to the north.

Meanwhile, Bran Stark is on the road with the reeds in the land beyond the wall, where he has further visions and repeatedly uses his ability as a "warg". On Drachenstein, Selyse Baratheon, wife of Stannis, becomes more and more fanatical about her belief in the red god, while Stannis himself even has human sacrifices carried out.

In King's Landing Jaime is bitter because he can no longer use his sword hand, but Tyrion puts Bronn at his disposal so that Jaime can train his left hand. Tyrion worries about Shae's safety and disregards her. The splendidly staged wedding between Joffrey and Margaery takes place. The entire court is gathered, including Mace Tyrell, Lord of Rosengarten , and Prince Oberyn Martell, who hardly conceals his dislike for the Lannisters. Joffrey makes fun of Tyrion and his wife with a play of small people, who then mocks Joffrey. He becomes enraged and openly humiliates his uncle by making him act as his cupbearer . Joffrey cuts the wedding cake, eats it and drinks wine. Shortly afterwards, he can no longer breathe and dies unexpectedly of poisoning. Cersei blames Tyrion for her son's death and has him arrested.

Tyrion is imprisoned in King's Landing for allegedly murdering Joffrey. He is visited in the dungeon by his squire Podrick. He has refused to testify for a bribe against Tyrion. Tyrion realizes that Podrick is now himself in danger because of his loyalty. Joffrey's body is laid out in the Septe of Baelor. Tywin instructs Tommen, Cersei's second son and future king, in what makes a good and wise king: It is not piety or strength alone that is decisive, but rather to listen to his advisers; Joffrey did not and was neither a good nor a wise king. Cersei rejects Jaime's advances, Jaime forces her to have sex next to Joffrey's corpse. Tywin seeks out Prince Oberyn and offers him a place in the small council and the chance to take revenge on Ser Gregor Clegane, who cruelly murdered Oberyn's sister and her children at the end of Robert's rebellion. In return, Oberyn should take part in the trial against Tyrion as a judge, whereupon Oberyn agrees.

Sansa is taken to a ship by Ser Dontos, who took her away during the wedding reception. There she is received by Petyr Baelish, who has Ser Dontos killed and assures Sansa that she is now safe. On Drachenstein, Stannis Baratheon learns of Joffrey's death, but he currently lacks the means to take advantage of it. In the Riverlands, Sandor Clegane and Arya Stark are still on the run, with Sandor robbing a man who briefly gave them refuge.

At the wall, the vanguard of the wildlings (with Ygritte, Tormund and a group of the cannibal Thenns) attacked and killed several people. In the Black Fortress, the men of the Night's Watch learn of the murder of Jeor Mormont and the mutiny at Craster. Jon Schnee warns again of the impending danger from the wildlings, especially since Rayder now knows how few men defend the wall.

In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen has reached Meereen with her army. The champion of the city mocks Daenerys, but is quickly killed by Daario Naharis. Daenerys gives a speech to the residents of the city, especially to their numerous slaves. She is not her enemy and will free all slaves.

In King's Landing Jaime visits his brother Tyrion in the dungeon. Tyrion is under no illusions about the outcome of his trial, but assures Jaime that he did not kill Joffrey. Jaime believes him, but Cersei is firmly convinced of Tyrion's guilt. Jaime gives Brienne his new sword and orders her to find Sansa Stark and bring him to safety; Podrick is supposed to accompany Brienne. Meanwhile, Sansa is on a ship with Petyr Baelish. Baelish informs them that he has far-reaching plans and also played a role in the assassination of Joffrey, as his new allies had requested. Olenna Tyrell reveals to her granddaughter Margaery that she had arranged this so that Margaery would not have to marry a man like Joffrey.

At the wall, Ser Thorne and Janos Slynt plot together against Jon Snow. He decides to hunt down the mutineers at Craster's farm. He is also accompanied by Locke, Lord Bolton's henchman, who poses as a new recruit. The mutineers at Craster's farm loot the supplies and rape Craster's daughters. When they abandon a newborn baby to be sacrificed like Craster to the “White Walkers”, Bran Stark, the Reeds and Hodor fall into their hands. The mutineers' leader, former border guard Karl, threatens them and Bran reveals to him that he is Brandon Stark.

In Meereen, some Immaculate people enter the city through the sewers and hand over weapons to the slaves there. The city's slaves rise against their masters and greet Daenerys Targaryen as their deliverer. Daenerys orders the execution of 163 captive masters in retaliation for crucifying 163 children on the road to Meereen.

In the land beyond the wall, a “white wanderer” has brought the newborn baby from Craster's court to an unknown place, where he is “transformed” into one of theirs.

In King's Landing Tommen was crowned “King of the Andals and the First Men”. Cersei talks to Margaery Tyrell and tells her that while she loved Joffrey as her firstborn, she also knew what a terrible person he was. In another conversation with her father, Tywin, Cersei learns that the Lannisters' gold mines have been completely exhausted for three years. The crown could only cover the running costs on the basis of loans from the “Iron Bank” of Braavos and the resulting debts were enormous, which is why the Lannisters' alliance with the Tyrells is of so great importance. Brienne von Tarth and Podrick Payne are looking for Sansa Stark, while Arya Stark is still out with Sandor Clegane.

Sansa reaches the valley of Arryn with Petyr Baelish. At Hohenehr she is greeted by her aunt Lysa, but her identity is to be kept a secret. Lysa reminds Petyr that out of love for him and at his request, she poisoned her husband Jon Arryn and only attached the murder to the Lannisters in a letter to Catelyn Stark. Petyr Baelish is thus largely responsible for the conflict between the Stark and Lannister houses that started years ago. As a thank you, Lysa demands that Petyr marry her, to which he agrees. She also plans to marry Sansa Stark to her son Robin.

In the land beyond the wall, Bran Stark, the Reeds and Hodor continue to be held captive by the mutineers at Craster's court. Jon Snow's squad ambushes the mutineers, with Locke recognizing Bran as Brandon Stark and secretly trying to get him away. However, Bran manages to use his ability and take possession of Hodor's ghost and kill Locke. Bran, the Reeds and Hodor move away from the courtyard to find the weirwood tree from Bran's visions. Jon Schnee, not aware of this, fights with Karl, the leader of the mutineers, whom he ultimately kills.

In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen receives news of Joffrey's death. Ser Barristan Selmy advises her to set off for King's Landing with her 10,000 soldiers, as she now has ships and the situation is favorable. Daenerys also learns that tyrants are reigning in the cities of Astapor and Yunkai. She decides to stay and rule in Meereen for the time being.

In King's Landing the royal council of Varys is informed that Daenerys Targaryen has conquered Meereen and now resides there. Tywin hires Varys to take care of Daenerys. The trial of Tyrion begins and one witness after another incriminates him regarding Joffrey's death. Jaime realizes that the process is a farce and offers Tywin a bargain: he will lay off the knowledge of the Kingsguard and (as his father requested) take over the inheritance in Casterlystein if Tyrion is spared. Tywin agrees; he will allow Tyrion to join the Night's Watch after his conviction. But then Shae, Tyrion's former lover, is called as a witness. She testifies that Tyrion planned the murder of Joffrey with Sansa. Tyrion is deeply struck by Shae's betrayal. He furiously points out to those present that it was he who saved their lives in the Blackwater Battle and saved King's Landing from being plundered. He now regrets this and insists on his right to a divine judgment through battle.

Meanwhile, Stannis Baratheon and Ser Davos traveled to Braavos to negotiate with the “Iron Bank”. The bankers are dismissive, as Stannis hardly has any power left and Tommen now rules in King's Landing, with Lord Tywin behind him. Davos advises the bankers that Lord Tywin was old and Tommen was only a child; if Tywin died, no one could guarantee that the bank would get the money back. Stannis, on the other hand, always keeps his word. The bankers finally consent.

In the north, Asha Greyjoy tries to free her brother Theon. However, this one is broken from the previous torture and refuses to accompany Asha; Ramsay Snow, on the other hand, is happy with Theon and wants to use him to conquer Moat Cailin.

Daenerys Targaryen holds court in Meereen. Hizdahr zo Loraq, one of the city's leading men, asks permission to bury his father in a dignified manner, who is one of the city's crucified masters but was not responsible for the death of the 163 children. Daenerys must recognize the consequences of their actions and agrees.

In King's Landing, Tyrion finds himself in a seemingly hopeless position. Jaime cannot fight his brother in the coming judgment of God and Bronn does not want it. He will soon have a beneficial marriage. Cersei's representative in combat is none other than Ser Gregor Clegane; the risk is therefore too great for Bronn. Most recently, Tyrion is visited in the dungeon by Prince Oberyn Martell. This tells Tyrion that Cersei tried to manipulate him and that she apparently hates Tyrion dearly. But Oberyn hates the Lannisters and Ser Gregor, who killed Oberyn's sister and her children years ago. The prince therefore makes himself available as Tyrion's champion.

In the Riverside Lands, Arya Stark and Sandor Clegane are on their way to the Arryn Valley when they meet a dying man. He complains about how the world is out of balance and how it should actually be fair. Sandor kills the man to spare him further agony, and tells Arya about his childhood and his brother's atrocities. Brienne von Tarth and Podrick are meanwhile on a possible lead from Arya. On Drachenstein, Melisandre insists that Stannis' daughter Shireen accompany her on her imminent journey.

In the Valley of Arryn, Petyr Baelish Sansa explains that he loved her mother very much and that this was one of the reasons why he participated in Joffrey's murder. He kisses Sansa, who is completely surprised. Lysa Arryn watches the scene and threatens Sansa to plunge her through the moon gate. Petyr saves Sansa and explains to Lysa that he has only ever loved one woman - namely, Catelyn, her sister; then he pushes Lysa through the moon gate. Jon Snow returns from Craster's yard at the wall. Ser Alliser still despises him, ignoring Jon's warnings and advice regarding the approaching bulk of wildlings under Rayder.

Daenerys and Daario Naharis sleep together in Meereen. Ser Jorah is visibly dissatisfied with this development and asks Daenerys how she can trust the mercenary. She replies that she does not do so and that she ordered the mercenaries to retake Yunkai and kill the masters there. When Jorah warns her that the world is not black and white, Daenerys changes her mind. The nobleman Hizdahr zo Loraq from Meereen should accompany the mercenaries and give the slave masters a choice: They can live in their new world without slavery or go under with their old world.

38 8th The mountain and the viper The Mountain and the Viper June 1, 2014 July 21, 2014 Alex Graves David Benioff & DB Weiss 7.17 million
In the area of the Wall to the north, the wildling vanguard massacred a small village, with Goldie and her baby surviving. Jon Snow's Night Watch is concerned about the advance of the wildlings. At the strategically important fortress of Moat Cailin, which dominates the entrance to the north, the Bolton vanguard arrive. Ramsay Schnee gives Theon, who continues to speak of himself only as a "stinker", the order to obtain the surrender of the iron men in the fortress; they should be granted free withdrawal. After the surrender, however, the men of the garrison are brutally killed and partly skinned, just as the Boltons have been doing with their enemies for thousands of years. Lord Roose Bolton arrives with the main army and is satisfied. Now the entire north, which is larger than the other six kingdoms of Westeros, is in his hand. Ramsay is legitimized in thanks by Lord Bolton and is now his rightful heir.

In Meereen "Grauer Wurm" develops feelings for Missandei, which slowly seems to reciprocate. Ser Barristan Selmy is leaked a document that contains a pardon for Jorah by Robert Baratheon and thus proves Ser Jorah's espionage on behalf of King Robert. Ser Barristan confronts him with it; Ser Jorah tries to explain this to Daenerys personally, but Ser Barristan tells him that he will never speak to the Queen alone again. Daenerys Targaryen is struck by Jorah's betrayal and tells him to leave Meereen immediately. Jorah confesses his love to her, but Daenerys angrily rejects him; if he continues in Meereen, she will have him executed. Jorah then leaves town.

A high-ranking delegation of the Lords of the Valley appears on Hohenehr. They want to clear up the mysterious circumstances of Lysa Arryn's death and also summon Petyr Baelish's alleged niece, Alayne. She admits that she is really Sansa Stark; Lord Royce recognizes them. Sansa tells the nobles that their only friend at court was Lord Baelish, who saved them. Lady Lysa loved Petyr very much, but eventually went mad and committed suicide. The nobles are convinced and promise to keep Sansa's identity a secret, as they are not friends of the Lannisters themselves. Sansa later explains to Petyr Baelish that she played because she didn't know what fate would have awaited her after his conviction. Besides, she knows what Baelish wants. Lord Robin Arryn should get to know his lords and the valley better and therefore leave Hohenehr for a tour.

In King's Landing Jaime visits his brother Tyrion in the dungeon and they both joke with each other. Shortly afterwards, the fight between Prince Oberyn Martell and Ser Gregor Clegane takes place. Tyrion is concerned that Prince Oberyn competes without armor and only with a spear, while Ser Gregor is much stronger, taller and better protected. During the following fight, Prince Oberyn dodges again and again and calls out to Ser Gregor that he raped Elia Martell and killed her and her children; Ser Gregor should now confess. Prince Oberyn has the upper hand and Ser Gregor seems to be defeated when he seizes Oberyn at the last moment and brutally kills him. Lord Tywin then announces that Tyrion was guilty and sentenced him to death.

The entire episode takes place on the wall in the north, shortly before, during and shortly after the battle there between the Night Watch and the Wildlings at the Black Fortress. Goldie arrives at the fort with her baby at the last minute, where Samwell Tarly is happy that she is still alive. The men of the night watch have prepared as well as possible for the attack of the wildlings under Manke Rayder, but their chances are slim. The wildlings attack at night and outnumber them a thousand times; they even have some mammoths and giants. While the bulk of the wildlings attacked the wall from the north, the group under Tormund attacked the fortress from the south. Bloody battles ensue, in which Styr, the leader of the cannibalistic Thenns, is killed on the side of the wildlings, as is Ygritte, who dies in Jon Snow's arms. The Night's Watch also suffer heavy casualties, with friends of Jon and Sam's deaths including Grenn and Pyp. In the end, however, the night watch can hold the fortress and repel the attack. Jon, who excelled several times during the fighting and effectively assumed command, reminds the surviving members of the Night's Watch that Manke Rayder is still waiting out there with other parts of the wildlings. Jon decides to go straight to Manke and kill him. He hopes by doing this to split the tribes that were once warring and only united by Manke.

In King's Landing, Cersei tells her father that under no circumstances will she marry Loras Tyrell. Lord Tywin reacts angrily, but Cersei confronts him with the truth about her relationship with Jaime, which Tywin refused to admit. Cersei goes to Jaime, tells him about her conversation with Tywin and explains that she only wants him. Both sleep together. Tyrion is freed from dungeon by Jaime. Jaime explains that Varys will help escape, and the brothers say goodbye to each other. Tyrion goes into his father's apartment. There he meets Shae, who apparently slept with Lord Tywin. Tyrion strangles her and finds his father in the toilet, threatening him with a crossbow. Tywin admits that he always hated Tyrion, but that as Lannister he will not execute him; ask them to continue the conversation elsewhere. When Tywin calls Shae a whore, Tyrion kills his father with the crossbow. Varys brings him aboard a ship that will both leave the capital.

In the Arryn Valley area, Brienne and Podrick meet Arya and Sandor Clegane. Brienne realizes that the girl is Arya Stark and, according to her oath to Catelyn, wants to bring her to safety. Sandor refuses to surrender to Arya; since her parents and siblings are dead and Winterfell is just a ruin, she is nowhere safe. Brienne and Sandor fight each other and the bloodhound is defeated. Arya has left. She later goes back to the dying Sandor, takes the coins from him and leaves him to die. She finds a ship that is sailing to Braavos and shows the captain the coin that Jaqen H'ghar once gave her and says Valar morghulis to him . The captain bows and agrees to take her with him.

At the wall, Jon Schnee goes to Manke Rayder. Manke explains that Jon betrayed him, but Jon replies that he was true to his oaths to the Night's Watch. Manke refuses to turn back with the wildlings and calls on Jon to surrender; the wildlings know that the “white hikers” are approaching and only want to use the protection of the wall for themselves. The camp of the wildlings is unexpectedly attacked by strong cavalry; the surprised wildlings cannot oppose them and are defeated. It is about Stannis Baratheon, who has the "king beyond the wall" arrested. Jon advises him to burn all bodies immediately.

In the land beyond the wall, Bran, Hodor and the Reets reach the tree from Bran's visions. You are suddenly attacked by resuscitated skeletal warriors. A helper looking like a small child brings them to safety, but Jojen dies during the fight. Their helper reveals to them that his species was called "children" by the "first humans" who settled Westeros thousands of years ago, even though it is older than humanity. You will be led to an ancient man who lives inside the tree cavity. He is the "three-eyed crow" from Bran's visions; he had been many things in the course of time, now he was what Bran saw. He had watched them all for a long time and waited for them. Brandon Stark will never be able to walk again, but he will fly.

In Meereen, Daenerys Targaryen must realize that her dragons are becoming increasingly unpredictable; they killed a child. Daenerys decides to chain the two dragons in town. The third dragon is still on the hunt.

Examples of differences from the book

  • Some later storylines are already presented. This affects parts of the plot around Lord Roose Bolton and Theon Greyjoy in the north and Bran Stark in the land beyond the wall, which are only described in the fifth volume, A Dance with Dragons .

Oath keeper (4.04) In this episode there are several, sometimes considerable, deviations.

  • The action in Meereen differs slightly from the bookstore. In the original book, the conquest was directed as punitive action by Barristan Selmy and Jorah Mormont.
  • Lord Bolton had never sent a man to the wall (here Locke); Nor did Jon Snow plan to go to the mutineers at Craster's court.
  • Bran Stark never fell into the hands of the mutineers.
  • Scenes give an insight into the actions of the “white walkers” that are not described in the books.
  • In the book, Sansa is portrayed as Petyr's illegitimate daughter on Hohenehr, not his niece.

The laws of gods and men (4.06)

  • Stannis and Davos do not travel to Braavos in the books. However, Stannis receives (but only in the fifth original volume, A Dance with Dragons ) cash payments from the Iron Bank.
  • Asha Greyjoy makes no attempt to rescue her brother Theon in the books.

The Mountain and the Viper (4.08)

  • In the books, Ser Barristan knew all along that Ser Jorah was spying for Robert Baratheon, and reveals this at the end of the third original volume, while in the series Ser Barristan and Daenerys find out through a leaked letter.
  • In the books, the Lords of Arryn Valley learn nothing of Sansa's true identity. In addition, Lysa's death is staged as a murder by a singer (not present in the series).

The Guardians on the Wall (4.09)

  • Sam Tarly is not back in the black fortress after the first wildling attack, and neither is Goldy. Alliser Thorne and Janos Slynt are also not yet in the fortress at this time.
  • The representation of the battles differs in several points from the original book - the battle on the south side takes place separately in the books and takes place much earlier before the great battle on the north side. Pyp and Grenn also survive the battle in the book.

The children (4.10)

  • Jon Schnee does not voluntarily go to negotiate with Manke Rayder in the books. This threatens to tear down the wall with the horn of winter.
  • Sandor Clegane never fights Brienne in the book.
  • Jojen Reed does not die in the book.
  • In the books, Tyrion and Jaime split up because Jaime lied about Tyrion's (first) wife, Tysha, on Tywin's instructions. The confrontation and shooting of Tywin with the crossbow therefore also differ significantly. In addition, the non-show revelation about Tysha leads Tyrion to lie to Jaime and claim that he killed Joffrey; in the series, however, Jaime has long been convinced of his innocence.
