Arya dresses up as Walder Frey and invites his immediate family to a celebratory dinner. She lets them pour poisoned wine that kills all men, but leaves the servants and Walder Frey's young lover alive. This should tell everyone that House Stark is responsible for the murders (tell them the North doesn't forget. Tell them winter has come to House Frey. ). Then she travels towards Königsmund and on the way meets a group of Lannister soldiers who invite her to eat around the campfire. She tells them that she is on her way to King's Landing to kill Queen Cersei, which they think is a joke.

North of the wall, the army of white hikers and the undead - now even with undead giants - marches south. Bran and Meera reach the wall gate at the Black Fortress and are let in by the night watch. Jon Snow, the new king of the north, holds court in Winterfell. He lets search for dragon glass as it has been shown to be effective against the White Walkers. He also orders that everyone between the ages of 10 and 60 should receive comprehensive weapons training, including the girls and women, as otherwise they cannot muster enough forces against the undead. At Jon's request, the wildlings agree to man the unmanned fortress Ostwacht on the Sea of the Night's Watch to stop the undead there. Sansa wants to give the Umbers and Karstarks castles - families who fought for Ramsey Bolton and against the Starks, breaking their feudal oath - to loyalists. Jon, however, leaves the old headquarters to the young heirs of the traitors, Aliys and Harald, who again swear allegiance to him. Jon and Sansa argue about how to proceed, but are interrupted by Maester Wolkan, who now serves as their successor to the slain Maester Luwin. He hands Jon a letter from Cersei: she tells him to either swear allegiance to her or to die a traitor.

In King's Landing, too, Cersei sees himself surrounded by traitors. According to Jaime, at best three of the seven kingdoms are loyal to her. The extinction of the House of Frey and the lack of supplies and troops required by the now warring Tyrells weighed heavily. Jaime urges her to look for new allies, whereupon she receives Euron Greyjoy in King's Landing. He wants to attack Daenerys' fleet with the fleet of 1,000 ships from the Iron Islands and calls for Cersei's hand. Cersei refuses, and she and Jamie openly doubt his loyalty. Euron promises to come back with a gift to prove it.

Sam started his training as a maester in Altsass, but as a novice he is only allowed to do menial jobs. Since he is not allowed to enter the forbidden part of the library, he steals the key of a sleeping maester and takes out books that could be helpful in the fight against the White Walkers. He learns that the island of Drachenstein consists essentially of dragon glass, which Stannis Baratheon already mentioned at the time. Sam writes a letter to Jon to let him know. The next day he works in the quarantine station of the hospice and there - without knowing it - meets Jorah Mormont, whose gray scale disease has already spread over his entire arm. He asks Sam if Daenerys and her force have already landed in Westeros. Sam says no.

The Bloodhound moves north with two members of the Brotherhood Without a Banner - Thorus of Myr and Beric Dondarion. They arrive at a small abandoned yard where they spend the night. The bloodhound makes fun of the beliefs of his traveling companions and considers everything supernatural to be nonsense. After the priest has asked him to look into the fireplace, he has a vision and sees the army of the undead marching towards a fortress on the wall, which is by the sea near a large arrow-shaped mountain. That night the bloodhound ruefully buried the deceased residents of the farm, it was Sally and her father who took him and Arya in and he stole their silver. Her father cut her throat and then himself so as not to starve to death.

Daenerys Targaryen lands without any resistance with her forces as well as Tyrion and Varys on Drachenstein, the abandoned old ancestral seat of the House of Targaryen. From there she plans the further conquest of Westeros.

On Drachenstein, Daenerys Targaryen confirms the loyalty of Lord Varys. Since he has changed sides several times, she mistrusts him, but he points out that he is not available for any blind loyalty; for him it was about the empire and the population, which should finally live better. Daenerys accepts this point of view, but admonishes him to express himself openly to her in the future, otherwise she would have him burned alive. The red priestess Melisandre appears on Drachenstein and reports that Jon Schnee is now king in the north, has saved the wildlings and wants to use them and the houses of the north to ward off the threat from beyond the wall. Tyrion assures Daenerys that Jon is reliable. Tyrion then sends a letter to Winterfell: Jon should come to Drachenstein and swear loyalty. She also begins preparations for the invasion. The troops of the houses of Tyrell and Martell are supposed to besiege Asha Graufreud's king's landing with the help of the fleet, so as not to give Cersei an excuse to incite the population in the seven kingdoms because of foreign troops. At the same time, the Immaculate should land at Casterlystein to break the power base of the House of Lannister. Before heading south, Olenna Tyrell warns Daenerys not to trust the advice of others too much, however clever they may be, thus pointing out Tyrion. She is a dragon and should act as such. Before Gray Worm sets off for Casterlystein with the other Immaculate ones, Missandei says goodbye to him, and they sleep together.

In King's Landing, Cersei Lannister tries to win over some vassals of House Tyrell for himself. She draws Daenerys Targaryen in the darkest colors, tells of the crucifixions of the nobles in Meereen, warns of the threatening acts of violence by the “barbarians” who are in their army, and recalls the deeds of the mad King Aerys. With House Tyrell in open rebellion, she exhorts their bannermen to keep their oaths to the crown. Randyll Tarly, Samwell's father, vassal of the Tyrells and one of the finest warriors in the Kingdoms, reminds us that Daenerys now has three full-grown dragons, just like Aegon the Conqueror did 300 years ago. Jaime tries to get Randyll on the side of the Lannister family: he offers him the supreme command. Tarly reacts irritably and reminds Jaime of the honor of his house, which means everything to him. A tarly does not break his oath - or murder wedding guests. Jaime, in turn, points to the feudal silk opposite the crown and offers House Tarly to succeed the Tyrells as guardians of the south. In the dungeon, Qyburn Cersei presents a ballista that was built after it was learned that one of Daenerys' dragons was wounded by spears in the Meereener battle arena. Cersei is delighted with how easily the bolt penetrates the thick dragon skull.

In Altsass, Jorah Mormont learns from a maester that - since he did not cut off his arm immediately after the gray scale infection - he will turn into a stone person in 6 months at the latest and he will be dead in 10 to 20 years. Since his gray scale disease has now spread over his chest, according to current professional opinion, he is no longer treatable. He is supposed to be shipped to Valyria the next day to live in isolation with the other stone people. He is also free to kill himself with his sword before leaving the next day. Jorah reveals himself to Samwell as Jeor Mormont's son. When Jorah writes a suicide note to Daenerys that night, Samwell secretly comes to him and tries to use an extremely painful procedure, including the use of book knowledge, to treat him. a. by removing the gray scales to heal.

On the way to King's Landing, Arya Stark learns in the tavern where her old companion "Hot Pate" works that the Boltons in the north have been defeated, Winterfell has been freed and Jon rules there now. Instead of going south, she decides to ride to Winterfell. While resting, she is surrounded by a pack of wolves and by chance meets her direwolf Nymeria, whom she chased away (in the second episode of season 1 ) so that the Lannisters could not kill her. Arya wants to take her with her, but the now completely overgrown Nymeria turns away from her with her new pack.

In Winterfell, Jon receives Samwell's message about the dragon glass deposits on Drachenstein. He decides to accept Daenerys Targaryen's invitation, whereupon his lords and allies express angry protests that Tyrion should not be trusted as a Lannister and a Targaryen. Jon points out that they need more allies. Daenerys' dragon glass, her army and especially her dragons are invaluable against the White Walkers and the undead. Jon reminds the Lords that he never wanted to be King of the North but that he takes his duties seriously. He would defend the north to the end, but for that they would need Daenerys' support; only a king could ask a queen for it. In his absence he installs Sansa as regent in the north. Littlefinger asks Jon to say hello to Tyrion and admits that he loved Catelyn and now loves Sansa. Jon reacts furiously and warns him never to touch her or he would personally kill him.

The Martells go back to Dorne with Asha Greyjoy, but Asha’s ships are attacked with incendiary bullets and boarded by Euron Greyjoy’s iron fleet. Asha's flagship is hijacked by Euron and the sand snakes Obara and Nymeria, Ellaria's stepdaughters, are killed, among many others. Asha, Ellaria and Tyene are captured while Theon panics and flees into the sea.

Jon reaches Drachenstein with Ser Davos and asks Daenerys' help in the fight against the White Walkers and their army of the undead. Daenerys, on the other hand, thinks the story of an army of the undead is incredible, and Tyrion also has doubts. Instead, she asks Jon to bend his knee and recalls his ancestor Torrhen Stark, who, as King of the North, swore allegiance to Aegon Targaryen over 300 years ago. In return, Daenerys wants to use him as guardian of the north. Jon refuses to do this, because due to the events north of the Great Wall there is no time for power struggles for the Iron Throne and otherwise he would no longer have any support in the north. Daenerys then regards Jon as the self-proclaimed king of the north as a rebel who contests her claim to the throne.

Theon Greyjoy is rescued from the sea by his people, while Euron Greyjoy is celebrated as a hero in King's Landing. Euron brings his captured niece Asha, Ellaria Sand, and their daughter Tyene Sand in front of them and hands them over to the extremely devoted Cersei as his promised gift to prove his loyalty to her. In a brief conversation with Jaime in the throne room, Euron almost clashes with him when he again utters sexual allusions to his relationship with Cersei. Cersei has the Martells incarcerated and, in revenge, poisons Tyene in the same way and with the same poison that Ellaria used to poison Myrcella in Dorne. Ellaria has to watch helplessly as her daughter slowly dies.

Tycho Nestoris arrives in King's Landing as envoy of the Iron Bank of Braavos and is concerned about the failure of the Lannister family to repay their debts. The turmoil of the war, and especially the lack of support from House Tyrell for the Crown, made him doubt whether Cersei would even be able to pay her debts. Cersei promises to stick to the House Lannister motto, that they always pay their debts, and consoled him that if they win, Dothraki slaves and Daenerys' dragons will be cashed in as spoils of war.

Jon can move freely around the island on Drachenstein, but is not allowed to go to his ship. Tyrion supports him by asking Daenerys to let him mine the much-needed dragon glass on the island. She agrees to have Jon as an ally after learning that Asha Greyjoy and the Martells have been crushed.

On Winterfell, Sansa gives the order to move more supplies there for the winter and upcoming battles and to store them. She also advises the Arryns, who are not used to the harsh conditions in the north, to make their shiny plate armor winter-proof with leather. Just as Littlefinger advises Sansa that she should question everything and everyone, Bran and Meera Reet suddenly arrive at the castle. Sansa tells him that as the last living son of Eddard Stark, he is now the legitimate Lord of Winterfell. The visibly changed Bran replies, however, that he could not become Lord of Winterfell, since he is now the three-eyed raven who sees everything.

In Altsass, Jorah Mormont is examined again by the archmaester, who finds a sudden recovery from his gray scale disease. In order not to get his savior Samwell into trouble, he hides the successful operation from the maester. Jorah is allowed to leave the infirmary. However, the archmaester knows of Samwell's treatment and is proud of him, even if he has endangered himself and the citadel. As a punishment, however, Samwell has to make copies of old, partially weathered scrolls.

Daenerys and her advisors assume that Cersei is expecting the attack of the Immaculate on Casterlystein. According to Tyrion's knowledge, the castle has a powerful and well-trained garrison, which was once set up by Tywin Lannister. The Immaculate start the siege of the Lannister family castle on the walls with scaling ladders, as well as via a secret access from the sea via the sewer system and the toilets that Tyrion once created during construction to secretly smuggle his whores into it. A small troop of Immaculate succeeds in opening the gate for the main force. The Immaculate take the castle but realize that most of the garrison has been withdrawn. On the sea off Casterlystein, Euron's fleet surprisingly attacks that of the Targaryens.

It turns out that Jaime incorporated most of the garrison into the Lannister field army to attack the Tyrells on Rosengarten. With Bronn and his new generals Randyll and Dickon Tarly, he takes Rosengarten by storm and arrests Olenna Tyrell. Since Olenna knows that this is her end, she persuades Jaime because he supports the evil Cersei. Control had long since slipped from him. To spare her a gruesome public execution, Jaime offers her poison, which kills painlessly. She drinks it and has Cersei tell that it was she who poisoned King Joffrey.

In the expanse, Jaime pays Bronn in gold for his services. The rest of the captured gold of the fallen House of Tyrell is to be brought to King's Landing. Bronn is dissatisfied because Jaime had promised him a castle and a high-born bride. Jaime consoles him with the fact that after their victory there will be enough abandoned castles to choose from. First of all, Bronn is supposed to help the new guardian of the south, Randyll Tarly and his son Dickon, to take part of the harvest from the farmers of the vastness - which is the most fertile part of Westeros and the breadbasket of the Seven Kingdoms - to provide food for the troops.

In King's Landing Tycho Nestoris from the Iron Bank and Cersei await the arrival of the stolen gold from Rosengarten. Nestoris assures the Queen that she can be sure of the support of the bank after her debt is repaid. Cersei then intends to enlarge her army and expand her fleet. To do this, she sent her hand Qyburn to Essos to recruit men for the Golden Company , a famous mercenary unit.

In Winterfell, Littlefinger gives Bran the Valyrian steel dagger, which once almost took his life in the hands of a mysterious assassin ( season 1 , episode 2). Littlefinger addresses him as Lord Stark. However, Bran rejects this position again and mentions Littlefinger's “Chaos is a ladder” speech in the conversation, which unsettles the latter. Meera Reet says goodbye to Bran because he no longer needs her and is now safe on Winterfell. She wants to be with her family when the invasion of the White Walkers and the undead host begins. The farewell is emotionless on the part of Bran, as he now seems as a three-eyed raven removed from the here and now. Maester Wolkan built a wheelchair for Bran with which he now gains more freedom of movement. Arya arrives at Winterfell and meets Sansa and Bran. Bran gives Arya the precious dagger that he received from Littlefinger, as he has no use for it as a "cripple". Brienne and Podrick are pleased to see that the siblings are finally reunited, just as Catelyn Stark had wished Brienne to do. Brienne and Arya practice sword fighting and measure their skills while Sansa and Littlefinger watch.

On Drachenstein, Jon Daenerys shows the ancient petroglyphs of the children of the forest that he came across in the cave next to the large deposits of dragon glass . They show that the children of the forest and the first humans, despite their differences, once formed an alliance against the White Walkers. Jon tells her that now they too have to forge an alliance, otherwise everyone will die. Daenerys offers him her full support if Jon recognizes her as the sole rightful queen and swears allegiance to her. But he replies that after all the incidents the people in the north would not accept a ruler from the south. Outside the cave, Tyrion tells them about the capture of Casterlystein and that now, after Euron's successful attack on their fleet, the Immaculate are stuck there on foot. The supply of their troops with food is also no longer guaranteed, as the Lannisters have brought the vastness under their control and control the harvest. Tyrion proposes to her to call back the Immaculate and to let the Dothraki with the remaining ships cross over to the mainland, in order to then besiege King's Landing with them. Instead, she wants to burn down the Red Keep in King's Landing with the dragons, since Cersei is staying there. Since Daenerys is about to lose with no allied houses, she turns to Jon for advice. He advises her not to burn down fortresses and cities with the dragons, as her ancestors did.

In an interview with Jon on Drachenstein, Davos estimates that they can field fewer than 10,000 fighters in the north against the Night King. Missandei tells Jon and Davos how she got into Daenerys' service. Daenerys followers believe in her not because of her birthright, but because of her personality and actions. The conversation is interrupted when Theon, believed dead by Daenerys' people, arrives with some of his soldiers and one of his ships after the lost naval battle. Jon sees him and only doesn't kill him because of his betrayal at the time, because he later helped Sansa escape from Ramsay Bolton. Theon wanted to ask Daenerys to rescue his sister Asha from Euron's captivity, but she has set off with the Dothraki and their greatest dragon Drogon on a campaign against the Lannisters.

In the expanse near the border with the Crownlands, Jaime learns from Randyll Tarly that the gold has arrived safely in King's Landing. When the Lannister army rests on its march back to King's Landing, the Dothraki riders appear completely unexpected. The Lannister soldiers manage to form a shield wall with the spear bearers just in time and to line up with the archers before they are attacked. Bronn urges Jaime to leave the battlefield with him and let the soldiers fight without him. Jaime wants to oppose the enemy and says that they can withstand. But suddenly Daenerys appears on Drogon and burns a breach in the shield wall with him from the air, making it easy for the Dothraki to break the ranks. Next she burns the supply wagons and many of the Lannister soldiers with Drogon. Jaime lets the archers fire at Drogon, but the arrows bounce off his scales ineffectively. Jaime then orders Bronn to shoot Drogon with the newly developed ballista, as he cannot do it with one hand. Bronn manages to hit the dragon's shoulder with the second shot and save himself when Drogon lands in pain and destroys the ballista. When Daenerys tries to pull the spear bolt out of Drogon on the ground, Jaime sees this as his chance to attack and stops - under the worried eyes of his brother Tyrion - on his horse with a spear at Daenerys, but Drogon suddenly turns around and spits Fire. At the very last second, Jaime is saved by Bronn by pushing him from his horse into the nearby river and both diving down in front of the fire roller. Jaime sinks helplessly in his heavy armor to the bottom of the river.

Bronn and Jaime survived the battle and escaped from the river, but are cut off from the rest of the battered army. Jaime realizes that Daenerys only attacked with one of her three dragons, so not with her full strength. The surviving Lannisters soldiers are faced with the choice of defection to Daenerys or death. Randyll Tarly and his son Dickon refuse because they consider them a foreign invader and, despite Tyrion's intercession, are sentenced to death by Daenerys and then burned to ashes by Drogon. Out of fear, the remaining soldiers also submit.

Jaime arrives in King's Landing and tells Cersei of the total loss of his army and of Olenna Tyrell's admission to be responsible for the death of Joffrey. Cersei wants to use the gold from the Tyrells and the Iron Bank to recruit mercenaries. Jaime tells her that the Dothraki could defeat any army with ease and that the ballista didn't do much damage to the dragon. He already sees the war as lost.

In Winterfell, Bran uses a raven with his warg ability as a scout and discovers the army of the undead just beyond Ostwacht on the sea. He has Maester Wolkan's Ravens spread this information in Westeros.

In Altsass, the archmasters are not sure what to make of this news. Some suspect that Daenerys' ruse to move the troops north, so their conquest would meet little resistance. Sam tries to convince them of the authenticity. He met Bran once and saw an undead himself. The maesters want to ensure the correctness by writing back to Maester Wolkan. The archmaesters know about the death of Samwell's father and brother and keep it from him so that he can continue his education. In the evening Sam has to copy an old book while Goldie annoys him with details from another book by a High Septon, including the exact number of steps in the citadel, or the windows in the Great Septe, but also about a divorce between Prince Rhaegar Targaryen and a princess of Dorne and a subsequent secret wedding in Dorne. Sam is exasperated and - without noticing it - gives little Sam the important book to play with. Sam is frustrated not being able to do more as the undead army approaches. He steals books from the forbidden section of the library and leaves Altsass with Goldie and her son.

Daenerys arrives at Drachenstein with Drogon. To her amazement, Jon lets him touch him. She asks him whether he really got a knife in his heart, as Ser Davos reported. But the conversation is interrupted when Jorah Mormont unexpectedly arrives and is warmly welcomed by Daenerys. Tyrion and Varys agree that Daenerys must not take the path her father once did - who also had people executed by burning - and are looking for ways to prevent this. Jon learns from Bran's letter that he and Arya are still alive and that the White Walkers and their host of undead are near Eastwatch. Together with Davos, Jon, Daenerys and Mormont they develop a plan to convince Cersei - who thinks the army of the undead is a fairy tale - that it is real: they want to show one of the undead to her. Since, according to Tyrion, Cersei probably only listens to Jaime, and he only listens to Tyrion, he himself wants to go to the capital to speak to Jaime. Davos smuggles him there and looks for Gendry. He works as a blacksmith for the Lannisters and willingly comes along. He has forged a battle hammer, the preferred weapon of his father Robert Baratheon, which is even decorated with his heraldic animal, the deer. Meanwhile, Tyrion meets with Jaime in secret and explains the plans to him. When Davos, Gendry and Tyrion want to return to Drachenstein by boat, Tyrion is recognized by two members of the city guard. Gendry kills them with his battle hammer and they leave the capital.

Jaime Cersei then reports on his meeting with Tyrion, which she already knows about. She wants to use the negotiations with Daenerys to her advantage as Daenerys is currently militarily superior. She also reveals to Jaime that she is pregnant by him and that this time he should be publicly named as a father. But she threatens him - due to the merciful death of Olenna and the meeting with Tyrion - never to betray her again.

On Winterfell, the lords present complain to Sansa: Lord Glauer is of the opinion that the king of the north should stay in the north. Glauer would also accept Sansa as queen. Lord Rois mentions that he and his knights from the Green Valley are only there because of Sansa and not because of Jon. Sansa is flattered, but she stands by Jon's plans. Arya recommends that Sansa behead the two of them in case they refuse to obey, but Sansa refuses. Arya sees through Sansa and gives her to understand that she despises her secret greed for power. The suspicious Arya spies on Petyr Baelish, who initially meets secretly with a maid in the kennels and hands her a scroll. Then he also talks to Lord Glauer and Rois in the courtyard. In his quarters he receives an old message from Maester Wolkan from Maester Luwin's archives, of which there is no further copy on Winterfell. Arya breaks into Baelish's quarters and finds the message well hidden in the bedding. It is an old letter from Sansa, in which she - under duress - asked Robb to swear allegiance to then King Joffrey (after Eddart's capture and before his execution in season 1 , episode 8). He watches her as she leaves Baelish's room. Apparently he plans to play the Stark sisters off against each other.

On Drachenstein, Tyrion meets Jorah Mormont and hands him the coin that the slave trader once gave Tyrion as symbolic payment; Tyrion wants the coin back after his return so that he can return safely. Meanwhile, the dismantling of the dragon glass is in full swing. Contrary to Davos' advice to name a false identity, Gendry imagines Jon as the bastard son of Robert Baratheon, both of whom share the close friendship of their - supposed - fathers. Davos, Gendry, Jorah and Jon set out for Ostwacht an der See and meet Tormund there, who is holding three people prisoner: the bloodhound, Beric Dondarion and Thoros von Myr. The men are initially divided: Gendry accuses Beric and Thoros of having sold him to Melisandre. Tormund learns that Jorah Mormont is the son of the former Commander of the Night's Watch who was responsible for the deaths of many wildlings. However, since they have a common goal, they finally set out north together to capture an undead.

In the hunt for an undead north of the wall, Gendry and the Bannerless Brotherhood gradually reconcile. Jon wants to return Jorah's Valyrian family sword Longclaw. But Jorah refuses because he brought shame on his house and Jon was given the sword for no reason.

On Winterfell, Arya accuses her sister of being responsible for her father's death because of the discrediting letter. Sansa claims that she was forced by the Lannisters and wanted to save Eddard from the death penalty. Arya replies that she also saw the execution and was also unable to intervene. She still sees Sansa's behavior as a betrayal of the Stark family. Sansa then makes it clear to her that it was she who called the Knights of the Green Valley to help in the Battle of Winterfell against House Bolton. Without them, Winterfell could not have been retaken. In addition, Sansa had endured terrible things while her sister was on a world tour. Arya keeps the letter and reserves the right to show it to the Lords of the North if necessary.

To the north, beyond the wall, Tormund tells Sandor of his infatuation with Brienne. Beric and Jon also talk about the reason for their resuscitation and that they are fighting for life. Death is the enemy and it always wins, but it must be fought to protect all living. Shortly afterwards, the bloodhound spies the arrowhead-shaped mountain in his vision.

On Drachenstein, Tyrion notices that Daenerys is worried about Jon. They discuss how to proceed against Cersei. Tyrion advises Daenerys to withhold her impulsive behavior, since the burning of Randyll and Dickon Tarly was a mistake in his eyes. Daenerys wants to deny this, but Tyrion makes it clear to her that he and his brother made a promise to each other for a preliminary truce. Daenerys must be able to understand their enemies and their motives, and must not act like the other rulers with sheer force. The new, fairer world to which it aspires will not be built in a lifetime. In addition, Daenerys has to worry about her succession to the throne, since she cannot have children. If she were killed in battle, the battle for a better world would be lost. Daenerys takes this as a reproach and, offended by Tyrion, only wants to decide on her succession to the throne when she has conquered the throne.

North of the wall, the group comes across a huge, undead polar bear that attacks them. The fire priest Thoros of Myr risks his life to protect Sandor, who is rooted to the attacking bear. Jorah can eventually kill the bear. After Beric has soothed Thoros' wounds with his burning sword, the group continues their search.

On Winterfell, Sansa Petyr Baelish reports that Arya has the letter. She fears that the soldiers of Winterfell will not see her as their queen, leave the castle and go home because of the harsh winter. Sansa doesn't recognize Arya. Baelish suggests that she seek help from Brienne of Tarth, as she swore to her mother, Catelyn, that she would protect both daughters.

In the north, Jon's group unnoticed near the arrowhead-shaped mountain spotted a vanguard of the Night King, consisting of a white hiker and a small group of the undead in a mountain pass. You successfully set an ambush. Jon succeeds in destroying the White Walker with a long claw, whereupon to the amazement of the group all undead disintegrate immediately. They overpower and tie up the remaining undead and are close to the success of their mission. But then they hear the Night King's main force approaching. Jon sends Gendry as the fastest runner among them to Ostwacht, from there to send a request for help to Daenerys with a raven. The army of the undead approaches and Jon's group is forced onto a frozen lake. There they line up on a rock plateau for the fight. When the host of the undead attack, the ice breaks under their sheer mass, whereupon many of them break in. The undead have to break off the attack and the opposing troops hold out until the next morning. Gendry arrives at Ostwacht completely exhausted and explains the situation, whereupon Davos sends out a raven. Thoros has since succumbed to his injuries and the cold of the north and is burned by the rest of the group. It is now clear to them that they can only conquer the undead if they destroy the respective White Wanderer who created them. Beric concludes from this that they have to kill the Night King, since all White Walkers and, indirectly, all undead are subject to him.

At Winterfell, Sansa receives an invitation from Cersei to King's Landing. She senses a trap and instead sends Brienne there, because she gets along well with Jaime. Reluctantly, it finally breaks open after Sansa assured her several times that she felt more safe and protected on Winterfell than anywhere else.

On Drachenstein, Daenerys receives the message from East Watch. Tyrion tries to keep her from leaving, but regardless of this, she immediately sets off with her three dragons north to come to Jon's aid.

On the battlefield in the north, the broken ice of the lake has now frozen over again and the undead are continuing their attack. A bitter struggle breaks out. Tormund is saved by Sandor at the last moment, when the undead try to pull him under the ice. Just before the group is overwhelmed, Daenerys arrives with her dragons on the battlefield. The dragons burn a multitude of the undead and partially melt the ice in the lake again. But the Night King wins the upper hand once more when he fatally hits the dragon Viserion in the neck with an ice spear. Viserion falls into the lake and dies. However, Drogon and Daenerys manage to save the group. Jon stays behind and continues to fight the undead. He calls to Daenerys that they should flee without him because the Night King wants to throw another ice spear, this time at Drogon. On their escape, Daenerys and the group look back at the battlefield, shocked by the death of Viserion. Jon is torn into the lake by the undead in a battle. But he manages to free himself from the icy water and finds his long claw sword, which he had lost in the scuffle. The undead want to attack him again. But suddenly Benjen Stark appears, who was resuscitated by the children of the forest to save Jon. He gives him his horse and sacrifices himself in the fight against the undead to enable Jon to escape to East Watch.

At East Watch, Daenerys waits hopefully for Jon. Just as she is about to leave, he reaches the gate to her relief, but passed out on his horse. He is taken to their ship and stripped of his frozen clothing. Daenerys sees Jon's scars and is in disbelief that Davos was telling the truth and Jon was actually stabbed and resuscitated.

In Winterfell, Sansa rummages curiously in Arya's room and finds the preserved faces horrified. Arya catches her and tells about her training in Braavos and about the "game of faces". She knows that Sansa always wanted to be queen while she was trained in sword fighting. Arya says she could take on any look if she wanted - even Sansa's, if she only had her face for it.

Jon and Daenerys come to rest on the Targaryen Fleet ship. He expresses his condolences for her fallen dragon Viserion and regrets having gone hunting for the undead. But Daenerys calms him down and says she must have seen the threat to believe it existed. She mourns Viserion as if he were her own child. Daenerys promises Jon that they will fight the Night King together. Now that Jon knows Daenerys, he promises to swear allegiance to her when he has recovered.

On the battlefield in the north, the Night King pulls the dead dragon Viserion out of the lake by means of heavy chains and revives him.

The Immaculate, Dothraki and Euron's fleet line up in front of King's Landing during the meeting. Sandor carries the captured undead in a box to later show him to Cersei. On the way he meets Brienne, who thought he was dead. He learns from her that Arya is safe on Winterfell. Tyrion also meets Bronn and his old squire Podrick, who still regards him as his lord. A meeting takes place between all the pretenders to the throne and their advisors in the ruined dragon pit in King's Landing. There Sandor meets his completely changed brother Gregor. Daenerys is the last to arrive with her two dragons, and Cersei sees her and her dragons for the first time. The assembled first have arguments among themselves until Sandor lets the undead out of the box, who is walking towards Cersei, but is tied to a chain. Sandor and Jon demonstrate that the undead are not so easy to get at with conventional weapons and that they can only be destroyed with fire and dragon glass. They also tell Cersei that they estimate the troop strength at around 100,000 undead and white walkers. Cersei is shocked by the demonstration. Likewise Euron, who asks if they can swim, which is denied. He wants to avoid the disaster by sailing back to the Iron Islands and leaving immediately. Cersei agrees to a truce, but only with Jon, as he is the - supposed - son of the honorable and therefore trustworthy Ned Stark. Cersei doesn't trust Daenerys. But then Jon swears allegiance to Daenerys in front of all those gathered, without having discussed it beforehand, because he wanted to come out with the truth immediately and not later. Cersei leaves the meeting angrily. After Jaime tries unsuccessfully to bring Cersei to her senses, Tyrion talks to her. He assures his sister that he never wanted to destroy her house, that he is using diplomacy because of it and that Daenerys is not raging in the country for him to get the crown. Tyrion tells her that he believes in Daenerys and her cause for a better world. When he pours her wine during the conversation and she doesn't drink it, he guesses that she is pregnant.

In the Dragon Pit, Daenerys ponders how this place was the beginning of the end of House Targaryen when it locked the dragons there and made them smaller, as did the house itself. She tells Jon she cannot have children. The witch who “killed” her husband Drogo more or less with magic told her. But Jon doesn't believe it and is convinced that she can have children. Daenerys fears that Cersei will take half the country if she moves north with her armies to fight the Night King. At that moment, Cersei unexpectedly enters the dragon pit again and promises that she will order her entire army to the north to help them.

In Winterfell, the surprised Sansa receives Jon's message, in which he declares that he swears allegiance to Daenerys. Littlefinger is with her, suspecting that Jon and Daenerys might want to get married. Littlefinger says that while Jon was named King of the North, he could just as easily be deposed. Sansa says that even if she wanted to take power, she is afraid of Arya, who would see it as treason, and stands by Jon. Littlefinger suggests to Sansa that Arya came to Winterfell to find evidence of Sansa's alleged treason and then killed her to be Lady von Winterfell herself.

On Drachenstein, Jon and Daenerys decide to let the Dothraki ride on the royal route to Weisswasserhafen and to send the Immaculate there with the fleet, where they will both be on board. From there they all want to go to Winterfell together, but after his oath of loyalty, Jon thinks it is a good idea to be seen with her in order to gain confidence in the northerners. When the plan is in place, the remorseful Theon talks to Jon alone. Jon partially forgives Theon for his deeds and forgive him to understand that they are both Ned Stark's sons, but that Theon is just as greedy as Stark. Theon then wants to free his sister Asha from the captivity of her uncle Euron. He wants to get his few remaining iron men to free Asha, her queen, but the captain Harrag turns across because he assumes that she is dead. Knowing that the undead cannot swim, the captain wants to raid an island on his own, kill all the men there, steal their wives and settle there. But Theon recalls that Asha forbade this when she swore to Daenerys that the looting and rape would stop. A fight ensues between the two, with Theon narrowly winning and they set off with the ship to free Asha.

In Winterfell, Sansa has Arya brought to the assembly hall in front of Stark soldiers, Lord Yohn Rois, the Knights of the Green Valley and Littlefingers. But instead of indicting Arya, she, together with the omniscient Bran and Arya, accuse Littlefinger of his crimes: the fatal poison attack on Jon Arryn, the murder of her aunt Lysa Arryn to usurp the power of the Green Valley, and the letter to her parents that allegedly the Lannisters were behind the murder of Jon Arryn, which - in conspiracy with Cersei and King Joffrey - resulted in the death of their father Ned and thus the beginning of the war. Furthermore, she accuses him of having handed her over to the Boltons and having turned her against her sister. Realizing the gravity of the situation, he protests how much he loved and loves her mother and pleads for his life. But Arya then kills Littlefinger with his former dagger by slitting his throat.

In King's Landing, Jaime and his captains plan and coordinate the expedition to the north. However, Cersei has lied about the deal and has no plans to send her army there. She wants Jons and Daenerys' armies to fight the undead and then destroy their decimated armies. However, Jaime insists on making it clear to her that this is a struggle between the living and the dead and not between rival noble houses. Cersei noticed that a dragon was missing from the meeting. She deduces from this, since Daenerys powerfully presented her full army strength, that something must have happened to him and dragons are not invulnerable. Jaime reiterates that they cannot win against the Dragons and Dothraki. But she says that she has the Iron Bank and the Golden Company with 20,000 men, including cavalry and even war elephants on her side. Euron lied at the meeting on their behalf and, instead of going to the Iron Islands, secretly sailed to Essos to pick up the mercenary army and transfer them to Westeros. However, Jaime still wants to set off north with the Lannister Army, which Cersei interprets - in addition to the repeated meeting with Tyrion - as treason, since he would then fight side by side with their enemies. Gregor almost puts her on him when he stubbornly sets off alone. Just as Jaime leaves Königsmund, the first snow falls there.

Samwell arrives in Winterfell and seeks Bran. Bran says that he has to tell Jon that his parents are really Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen and that he was born a bastard in Dorne and would therefore be called Jon Sand. But Samwell remembers what Goldy read out in the diaries of a High Septon, namely that Rhaegar had his marriage to Elia Martell annulled and then married Lyanna Stark in a secret ceremony in Dorne. Samwell asks Bran if he could not figure this out with a vision of what he is doing. Bran sees that Robert's rebellion was based on a fatal error, as Robert Baratheon assumed that Rhaegar kidnapped and raped his beloved and promised Lyanna. In truth, however, it was a secret love marriage between the dragon and the wolf, between Rhaegar and Lyanna. (It remains unclear whether Robert himself didn't even know that Rhaegar and Lyanna were in love.) Meanwhile, on Daenerys 'ship, Tyrion sees Jon going into Daenerys' cabin at night, after which they sleep together. Bran also sees and hears in the vision that Jon's real name is Aegon Targaryen. Since his parents were married, he is the rightful heir to the throne. Bran and Samwell decide to tell him when he returns. In Winterfell, Sansa tells Arya that Littlefinger loved her in spite of everything, but that his execution was right.

In Ostwacht an der See, Tormund and Beric are concerned to see the White Walkers and the huge undead army appear in front of the wall and line up. Then the Night King appears on the undead Viserion and melts a gigantic breach in the wall using dragon fire. The defenders flee in a panic and many die in the collapse. The Night King now invades the north unhindered with his mighty force.

Others

  • In the episode Drachenstein , the British singer Ed Sheeran has a cameo as a singing Lannister soldier around the campfire. The relatively strong emphasis on the singer at this appearance triggered clear criticism from several series fans and some media commentators. Sheeran was incorporated into the plot by the show's producers as a surprise for Maisie Williams (Arya Stark), as Williams is a big fan of Sheeran.
  • As a result of the spoils of war , the American major league baseball player Noah Syndergaard made a cameo as a spear-throwing Lannister soldier in the Battle of the Gold Way .
