41 1 The wars that are coming The Wars to Come Apr 12, 2015 Apr 27, 2015 Michael Slovis David Benioff & DB Weiss 8.00 million
Lord Tywin's funeral is held in King's Landing. Cersei is bitter and wishes to take revenge on Tyrion, although she also blames Jaime. At the same time, she is concerned about developments at court, where Margaery Tyrell is gaining influence and taking Tommen over. Unexpected appears Lancel Lannister, who has joined the religious reform movement of the "Spatzen" (Original Sparrows ), who advocate a radical break with the worldly and a very simple and religious life in the sense of the faith of the seven. Lord Petyr Baelish leaves the valley of Arryn with Sansa Stark, while Brienne von Tarth and Pod continue to search for this. At the wall in the north, Stannis Baratheon plans to resume the campaign soon and also to recruit wildlings for the army. Jon Schnee points out the problems to him, especially since Manke Rayder will not bend over. Jon tries in vain to get Manke to give in, who is finally burned on orders from Stannis.

In Essos, Tyrion Lannister and Lord Varys reach the city of Pentos. Varys reveals to the depressed Tyrion that he has long been planning to restore the Targaryens. He finally persuades him to travel with Daenerys Targaryen to Meereen. Daenerys meanwhile has to assert itself in Meereen, where the followers of the old order resist their rule and the "sons of the harpy" (who have named themselves after the old symbol of Meereen) carry out attacks.

42 2 The house of black and white The House of Black and White April 19, 2015 May 4, 2015 Michael Slovis David Benioff & DB Weiss 6.81 million
In King's Landing, Cersei Lannister rearranges the little council and angered Kevan Lannister with her behavior; he is ready to serve the king, but not his mother, who has no legitimation. At the same time, Cersei receives a message from Dorne, which she interprets as a threat to her daughter Myrcella, who is engaged to the Dorne Crown Prince Trystane Martell and who is in Dorne. Jaime promises her to save Myrcella from Dorne, for which he insures Bronn's help. Meanwhile, in Dorne, the grieving Ellaria Sand is angry that Myrcella is staying at the Dornish court and that Oberyn's older brother and ruling Prince of Dorne, Doran Martell, does not want to do anything against the Lannisters. Brienne von Tarth meets Sansa Stark and Lord Baelish, but the meeting goes unfortunate. Sansa refuses to accompany Brienne, and she has to flee from Baelish's soldiers. At the wall in the north, Stannis Baratheon is dissatisfied with the development. The wildlings do not join as desired, while strong loyalists in the north refuse to cooperate with him against the Boltons. Stannis therefore makes Jon an offer: He should join him, in return Stannis would legitimize him as Jon Stark, the new Lord of Winterfell. Jon does not agree to this and is elected as the new Lord Commander of the Night's Watch through the intercession of Samwell Tarly.

In Essos, Tyrion Lannister and Varys are on their way to Meereen, where Daenerys Targaryen wants to try a captured "son of the harpy". Before that happens, he is murdered in prison by a former Meereener slave, whom Daenerys now has to execute according to the law, which only increases the unrest in the city. In Braavos, Arya Stark tries to enter the "House of Black and White" to join the group of assassins called "faceless men". Jaqen H'ghar reappears and finally allows her to enter.

43 3 The high sparrow High Sparrow Apr 26, 2015 May 11, 2015 Mark Mylod David Benioff & DB Weiss 6.71 million
The wedding between Tommen and Margaery takes place in Königsmund. The new queen immediately uses her considerable influence on Tommen and tries to politically neutralize Cersei. This is increasingly isolated at court, and Tommen even suggests that she retire to Casterlystein, but she manages to capitalize on an incident in Littlefinger's brothel. Religious zealots, the so-called sparrows, expose the High Septon (the highest religious dignitary of the Faith of the Seven) when he wanted to have fun in the brothel. Cersei visits the leader of the religious reform movement, who is known by everyone only as "High Sparrow" (Original High Sparrow ), and makes him the offer to replace the High Septon. The crown and faith are the pillars of the world and should stand together.

At the wall, Jon Schnee earns himself respect from the men of the Night's Watch by appointing Ser Allisar as First Border Guard and trying to banish Janos Slynt to an insignificant post. When Slynt refuses to obey, Jon executes him with his own hands. However, Jon remains tough on Stannis Baratheon and refuses to involve the Night Watch in the fighting against the Boltons. In Winterfell, Lord Roose Bolton reproaches his son Ramsay for his brutal methods in cracking down on strong loyalists. The Lannisters would not stand by them in the north, and the Boltons would have to make alliances. Lord Bolton and Petyr Baelish were apparently in contact with each other beforehand, because Sansa Stark is supposed to marry Ramsay in order to symbolically unite the two great rival houses of the north and thus legitimize the rule of the Boltons in the north. Sansa is desperate and wants to refuse; Littlefinger persuades her, however, that this will make her a political player and that she can pursue her own plans. Soon after, Sansa and Littlefinger arrive at the Boltons in Winterfell, where Baelish and Lord Bolton are discussing their future plans. So there is no need to worry about the Lannisters now that Tywin is dead. In a conversation with Pod, Brienne remembers how Renly Baratheon stood by her side in an embarrassing situation and how she loved him for it, which is why she will avenge him on his murderer Stannis.

In Essos Arya goes on to teach in Braavos with the "faceless men". The training is not going as she expected, but Jaqen H'ghar makes it clear to her that she must first learn to serve and become a nobody. Tyrion and Varys arrive in the great city of Volantis, where Daenerys Targaryen's reputation as a conqueror and slave-liberator can already be felt. Unexpectedly, the exiled Ser Jorah discovers Tyrion and kidnaps him.

In King's Landing, Cersei authorizes the new High Septon to set up the Faith Militant , the armed arm of the Faith of the Seven, which the Targaryens disbanded over 200 years ago. This is supposed to take action against all "sinners", with Cersei pointing out the High Septon to Loras Tyrell's homosexual inclination. Loras is captured, whereupon Margaery intervenes with Tommen, who turns out to be unable to take action against it. In the small council, Cersei sends Mace Tyrell to the Iron Bank in Braavos. Jaime and Bronn land on the coast of Dorne, where a fight with a patrol ensues. Meanwhile, Ellaria meets with the Sand Snakes, the daughters of Oberyn Martell. Together they decide to avenge Oberyn's death, despite the fact that Prince Doran is against it. They also know that Jaime Lannister went to Dorne.

In the north on the wall, Stannis Baratheon and his daughter Shireen, who suffers from an incurable disease and the ignorance of her mother, get closer. Melisandre tries in vain to seduce Jon Snow. In Winterfell, Sansa Stark and Lord Baelish visit the crypt. At the grave of Sansa's aunt Lyanna, the former fiancé of Robert Baratheon, Baelish tells the story of the great Harrenhal tournament in the final phase of the Targaryen rule. At that time, Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen defeated every opponent, but in the end it was not his wife Elia from the Martell family who crowned his wife Elia with a crown of winter roses, but Lyanna - the beginning of the later bloody argument when Rhaegar wanted Lyanna for himself and civil war broke out. Baelish says he must leave Winterfell now, but Sansa is ready for the coming period: Baelish expects Stannis to win the fight against the Boltons and Sansa Stark to be deployed in the north; otherwise Sansa would have to manipulate Ramsay Bolton.

Tyrion realizes that his kidnapper is Jorah Mormont, who wants to take him to Daenerys in Meereen. In Meereen, Ser Barristan reveals a story to Daenerys about her dead brother, Rhaegar, whom she never met. Rhaegar was therefore a good fighter, but he never loved killing and preferred to sing songs in front of a crowd of strangers. Shortly thereafter, a group of "Immaculate" gets caught in an attack by the "Sons of the Harpy". Barristan comes to their aid; he and gray worm can defeat the attackers and stay on the ground.

To the north, Brienne and Pod have reached Winterfell and are figuring out a way to get a message to Sansa. Ramsay Bolton's lover Myranda is jealous of Sansa and shows her that Theon is still alive. Ramsay makes fun of the situation and wants to make Theon (or "stinker" as he just calls him) the best man who gives him Sansa as his bride. Roose Bolton, who is expecting a child from his new wife, reveals to Ramsay that Stannis will soon be marching against Winterfell and that they will have to stop him.

At the wall, Jon Schnee has worked out a plan with regard to the expected invasion by the "White Walkers", according to which the remaining wildlings should settle south of the wall in order to strengthen the fighting capacity in an emergency. To this end, he wants to accompany Tormund Riesentod, who initially reacts negatively, beyond the wall to the camp of the wildlings in Hartheim. Jon knows the plan is risky, but Maester Aemon advises him to kill the boy within and act as a man; in fact, the plan met with decided rejection from almost the entire Night Watch, as its members are unwilling to forget the long history of the fighting and the atrocities that went with it. Stannis visits Samwell and remembers his father, Lord Randyll, who once defeated Robert Baratheon in a battle in the Targaryen Civil War. Sam reveals to Stannis that the "White Walkers" are to be killed with obsidian blades. Shortly afterwards, Stannis sets out with the entire army to the south.

In Meereen, Ser Barristan succumbed to his injuries, while Gray Worm was badly wounded. Daenerys first wants to take revenge. She arrests major family leaders and sacrifices one of them to her dragon. Eventually she makes the decision to reopen the battle arenas, but not to allow slavery. She also wants to marry Hizdahr zo Loraq as a sign of reconciliation. Meanwhile, Tyrion and Ser Jorah reach Valyria, once the largest city in the world and the center of a great empire, of which only ruins remain after the fall. They discover a dragon (Drogon) in the sky and are attacked by men who suffer from the incurable gray scale disease (in the original Greyscale ) and no longer behave like humans. They narrowly escape them, but Jorah finds that he is now infected with the disease himself.

46 6th Unbending, untamed, unbroken Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken 17th May 2015 June 1, 2015 Jeremy Podeswa Bryan Cogman 6.24 million
Lord Baelish arrives in King's Landing and reveals to Cersei that Sansa is still alive and is staying with the Boltons in Winterfell. Cersei reacts angrily, but Baelish assures her that he has the situation under control. Stannis and Bolton would weaken each other in battle, then he would lead the Knights of the Valley of Arryn north. In return, after the situation has been clarified, Cersei should appoint him as the new guardian of the north. Lady Olenna Tyrell unsuccessfully demands the release of her grandson Loras. Rather, this is heard by the new High Septon for homosexual practices, which he denies. Margaery is called as a witness. She explains that her brother never slept with men, but this can be refuted by a witness. Now not only Loras but also the new queen should be tried.

In Winterfell there is a confrontation between Sansa and Myranda. Sansa is married to Ramsay Bolton, who raped her on their wedding night in the presence of Theon / Stinker. In Dorne, Prince Trystane Martell and Myrcella get closer. Jaime and Bronn break into the water gardens and try to get Myrcella, but they are discovered and arrested. Even Ellaria and the sand snakes cannot bring Myrcella into their power, as Prince Doran's Guard was prepared for such an action.

Arya continues to be trained by Jaqen H'ghar in Braavos, but this progresses only slowly and is associated with blows and psychological tricks. She finally succeeds in getting a seriously ill girl to drink poisoned water, whereupon Jaqen initiates further practices. Tyrion and Ser Jorah are on their way to Meereen on foot. Jorah learns of his father's death. He hides his gray scale disorder from Tyrion and expresses his belief that Daenerys is the rightful and appropriate heir to the royal throne of Westeros. They are ambushed by slavers who want to bring them to Volantis, but Tyrion is able to convince them that Jorah is a famous fighter who can bring them in the arenas of Meereen.

47 7th The gift The Gift May 24, 2015 June 8, 2015 Miguel Sapochnik David Benioff & DB Weiss 5.40 million
In King's Landing Olenna Tyrell tries in vain at the High Septon to get her grandchildren Margaery and Loras released. The High Septon cannot be bribed or intimidated and insists on adherence to religious ordinances that provide for a trial. Lady Olenna then meets with Baelish, who appears to have a plan. Cersei visits Margaery in her cell and mocks her. At a subsequent meeting with the High Septon, however, he reveals to her that there are also allegations based on statements against her by Lancel Lannister, whereupon she is also arrested. At Dorne, Jaime cannot convince Myrcella of his intentions while Bronn and the Sand Snakes are incarcerated.

In Winterfell, Sansa, mistreated by Ramsay Bolton every night, desperately turns to Theon for help. However, he notifies Ramsay, who has an old servant who was a strong loyalist and wanted to help Sansa, tortured to death. Sansa realizes she is completely isolated and at the mercy of Ramsay. Meanwhile, Stannis Baratheon's army is advancing towards Winterfell, but the advance is made much more difficult by the bad weather. Davos urges Stannis to repent, but Stannis insists on the further advance, with Melisandre suggesting that a sacrifice to her God could help. Jon Snow moves up to the wall to meet the wildlings. Maester Aemon dies and the situation for Samwell Tarly becomes increasingly uncomfortable. While trying to protect Goldie from sexual assault, he is beaten up and then groomed by Goldie, where they become intimate with each other.

In Essos, Daenerys plans the wedding, which her lover Daario Naharis is not very enthusiastic about. Jorah and Tyrion are sold at the slave market and end up in the battle arena, where Daenerys recognizes Jorah and Tyrion reveals himself.

48 8th Hartheim Hard home May 31, 2015 June 15, 2015 Miguel Sapochnik David Benioff & DB Weiss 7.01 million
In King's Landing, Cersei is still imprisoned by the High Septon. Your situation seems hopeless: The little council under Pycelle has called Kevan Lannister to the capital, while King Tommen only reacts apathetically. The only way out seems to be to admit to having committed incest and high treason. In Winterfell, Lord Bolton intends to await the attack of Stannis Baratheon behind the walls, but Ramsay Bolton wants to proceed more aggressively. Sansa Stark learns from the broken Theon / Stinker that it was not her brothers Bran and Rickon who he killed back then, as they had escaped earlier. During the night watch, Olly expresses his dislike for the wildlings to Samwell, whom he cannot forgive for the brutal attack on his family.

Arya receives her first assignment in Braavos. In Meereen, Tyrion slowly manages to gain the attention and trust of Daenerys. She decides to use Tyrion's knowledge for her plans. Tyrion convinces her not to kill Ser Jorah but also not to have him by her side. Daenerys then expels her former subordinate from the city, who as a result wants to compete as a fighter in the arena.

Beyond the wall, Jon Schnee, accompanied by Tormund, arrives at the rest of the Wildlings in Hartheim (originally Hardhome ). He wants to convince them that they should put an end to their age-old hostility in the face of the threat posed by the "White Walkers" and the army of the undead. The Wildling leaders are skeptical and hostile, but eventually Jon and Tormund persuade several to accept the offer (land on the other side of the wall in exchange for support). While the embarkation is in progress, a surprising number of undead attacks Hartheim. The wildlings are overrun despite bitter resistance and Jon can only save himself at the last moment. He has to leave behind the obsidian blades that Sam gave Jon on the trip. Surprisingly, however, he succeeds in killing an apparently high-ranking "white wanderer" with his sword made of Valyrian steel. From the boats he finally follows how a leader of the “White Walkers” raises the dead.

49 9 The dance of the dragons The Dance of Dragons June 7, 2015 June 22, 2015 David Nutter David Benioff & DB Weiss 7.14 million
In the north, Jon Schnee reaches the wall with the surviving wildlings, where the newcomers are received rather hostile by the other members of the Night's Watch and Jon realizes that he can no longer fully count on the loyalty of his men. Meanwhile, Stannis Baratheon's advance on Winterfell has almost completely stalled. In a night attack by Ramsay Bolton, his troops suffer further losses. Stannis is desperate and sends Ser Davos to the wall to request supplies. Shortly afterwards, he accepts Melisander's proposal and sacrifices his own daughter Shireen at the stake in order to obtain the benevolence of the red god. In Dorne, Prince Doran lets Jaime Lannister know that he wants to bow to King Tommen's wish and will send Myrcella to King's Landing - but only if in return the marriage agreement is kept and Prince Trystane receives a seat on the royal council, which Jaime agrees to. Ellaria and the Sand Snakes make it clear to Prince Doran that he will not tolerate further resistance.

In Braavos, Arya notices the arrival of Lord Tyrell, who is meeting with representatives of the Iron Bank. With him is Ser Meryn Trant, whom Arya has sworn to kill. She shadows him and watches him in a brothel, but does nothing for the time being. In Meereen the fighting games begin in the big arena, which Daenerys, her future husband Hizdahr zo Loraq, Daario Naharis and Tyrion attend. Ser Jorah, who is victorious in the end, also fights in the arena. Suddenly, numerous followers of the "sons of the harpy" appear in the crowd and attempt to assassinate Daenerys. Hizdahr zo Loraq dies while Daenerys is surrounded by the assassins in the arena with Jorah, Tyrion, Daario and some soldiers. Unexpectedly, Drogon appears who kills several assassins. Daenerys gets on his back and flies with him out of the arena.

50 10 Mother's grace Mother's Mercy June 14, 2015 June 29, 2015 David Nutter David Benioff & DB Weiss 8.11 million
In King's Landing Cersei confesses to the High Septon that she slept with her cousin Lancel; However, she rejects all other allegations. The High Septon insists on trial, but allows Cersei to return to the red keep with her son Tommen after she has paid. Cersei's hair is shorn and she has to walk naked to the royal castle, where Qyburn receives her and introduces her to a new member of the royal guard: Gregor Clegane, who was resurrected by him, but who is apparently no longer human. Jaime and Myrcella leave Dorne by ship. Myrcella, who apparently knew Jaime was her father, collapses on the ship after being poisoned by Ellaria Sand shortly before leaving.

Before Winterfell, Stannis Baratheon has to realize that despite the ritual sacrifice of his daughter, he is in fact at an end. His wife hanged herself out of grief and half of his men deserted that night; even Melisandre abandons him and returns to the Black Fortress. With only weak strength and without horses, Stannis marches towards Winterfell, which he wants to besiege, but in front of its walls he is attacked by the Bolton troops, all of whom are mounted. Stannis suffers a crushing defeat and is badly wounded when Brienne finds him. She confronts Stannis with the murder of Renly, which he admits, causing Brienne to deliver the fatal blow. In Winterfell, Sansa Stark waits in vain for rescue when she runs into Myranda, Ramsay Bolton's lover. Theon / Stinker pushes Myranda off the parapet of the wall; when Ramsay returns, he and Sansa jump off the wall into the snow to escape. At the wall, Sam and Goldie leave the Black Fortress. Sam wants to become a maester and bring Goldie to safety with the baby. Olly tells Jon Schnee that a wildling has news about the long-lost Benjen Stark. However, this turns out to be a trap: Jon is stabbed to death by several brothers of the Night Watch with the slogan “For the Watch”; Ser Allisar took the first stab, and Olly the last. Jon collapses, bleeding profusely, and remains motionless.

In Braavos, Arya kills Ser Trant, who molested underage girls in the brothel. When she returned to the "House of Black and White", however, Jaqen H'ghar confronted her with not having carried out her actual murder assignment for another person, for which someone had to pay. He swallows poison himself and collapses dead; Arya is desperate, but Jaqen appears in place of the girl who was present earlier and who accompanied Arya during her training. Arya pulls one mask after the other from the face of the "dead Jaqen"; at last she sees her own face before suddenly going blind. In Meereen, Daario and Ser Jorah decide to go in search of Daenerys. Meanwhile, Tyrion and "Gray Worm" are supposed to keep order in the city, where Varys has now also arrived. Meanwhile, Daenerys Targaryen is unable to order her dragon Drogon to fly back to Meereen. She sets off on foot when a large horde of Dothraki appears and surrounds her.

Examples of differences from the book

  • The series plot completely lacks Arianne Martell (daughter of Doran Martell), who plays a not unimportant role in Dorne in A Feast for Crows . The same applies to the wildling wife Val (Manke Rayder's sister-in-law), Lord Jon Connington, his pupils - allegedly Prince Aegon - and Quentyn Martell. The latter, Quentyn and Aegon, want to ally themselves with Daenerys independently of each other in order to conquer the Iron Throne. The series also lacks the plot on the Iron Islands ( A Feast for Crows ) and the storylines with Asha Greyjoy described in A Dance with Dragons .
  • Varys does not accompany Tyrion to Essos in the books. Instead, he is in close contact with Illyrio Mopatis, and later with Jon Connington. Some later plots about Tyrion and Jorah are based on the bookstore, but modified (such as Jorah's gray scale disease, which affects someone else (Jon Connington) in the book, or the procedures for her capture).
  • Jaime and Bronn never went to Dorne in the books to "save" Myrcella. All related actions therefore only appear in the series.
  • Arya does not meet Jaqen H'ghar in Braavos and is trained there by someone else as a servant of the God with the many faces.
  • Brienne von Tarth does not meet Sansa Stark and does not look for her in the north.
  • Sansa Stark never travels north in the books to get married in Winterfell Ramsay Bolton, but stays in the Green Valley, where the plot is different. In A Dance with Dragons , Jeyne Poole, a friend of Sansas, is passed off as Arya Stark and is about to be married. The storylines about Sansa in Winterfell are only part of the series story.
  • In the books, the high sparrow got into the office of the High Septon not thanks to Cersei's help, but because of the influential position of the sparrows . The new High Septon threatens Margaery in the book, but not Loras, a lawsuit for sexual escapades.
  • In the books, Ser Barristan does not die, but continues to play a not unimportant role.
  • Many of the storylines in Essos have been omitted or greatly modified in the series, for example the conflict between Meereen and Yunkai described in the book is completely missing, as is the escape of the slaves from Astapor, where the government installed by Daenerys has since been overthrown
  • Daenerys Targaryen and Tyrion Lannister have not yet met in the books.
  • In the books, Jon Schnee does not go to Hartheim, where (as far as known so far) no battle took place.
  • In the books, Shireen Baratheon is still alive
  • In the books, Lord Tyrell and Ser Meryn Trant never visited Braavos.
  • In the books, Myrcella is not poisoned. Rather, Arianne Martell plans to help Myrcella gain her rights as ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, which Arianne thinks she deserves as the older sister of Tommen (according to Dornish law, women are also allowed to rule). Myrcella is wounded in this endeavor, but is still alive by the end of the book.
  • In the books, Varys does not appear in Meereen; nor do Jorah and Daario go looking for Daenerys together.
  • The result of the Battle of Winterfell remains unclear in the books for the time being, although Ramsay Bolton claims in a letter that he killed Stannis. At least Brienne does not appear in Winterfell, where Theon flees with the alleged Arya Stark (Jeyne Poole).
  • In the book, Manke Rayder was not burned and is still alive. Instead, the wildling rattle shirt (issued as Manke) was burned, which was killed by Tormund Riesentod in the series in Hartheim.
  • The decision that Sam goes south to become a maester is not made by himself in the book, but by Jon - against Sam's will. He is accompanied by Goldie and Maester Aemon, who in the book only dies on the arduous journey across the sea. Goldy also doesn't have her own son with her, but Manke Rayder's son. With this decision, Jon wanted to protect Manke's son from Melisandre. However, the idea of sending wildlings to be donated so that they can settle there does not come from Jon Schnee in the book, but from Stannis Baratheon.
