The episode name is also the Starks family motto, which is mentioned several times in the following.

Behind the gigantic ice wall in the north of the continent of Westeros, three members of the night watch encounter the undead "white hikers". Only one member survived the collision. Near Winterfell, the ancestral home of House Stark, which ruled in the north, the survivor was sentenced as a deserter and executed by Eddard "Ned" Stark, Lord of Winterfell. In addition to him, his sons Bran and Robb, his bastard son Jon Schnee, his ward Theon Greyjoy and some soldiers are present - his youngest son Rickon, his two daughters Sansa and Arya and his wife Catelyn stayed in Winterfell. On the way back to Winterfell, young direwolves are found, which the strong children raise from then on. The news reached them from the capital that Jon Arryn, who ran the affairs of state as the “hand of the king” and was Eddard's foster father, had died of an illness and the king, Robert Baratheon, was on his way to Winterfell.

A little later the king arrives in Winterfell. He is accompanied by a larger entourage, including: his wife Cersei, her twin brother Jaime Lannister, who serves in the Royal Guard, her younger, smaller brother Tyrion Lannister, called "the Gnome", Joffrey, Myrcella and Tommen, the children of the king as well Prince Joffrey's bodyguard, Sandor Clegane, known as "the bloodhound". King Robert and Eddard visit the grave of Eddard's sister Lyanna, who was betrothed to the king 17 years ago but was robbed by Rhaegar Targaryen, son of the then King Aerys. Eddard and Robert rebelled and overthrew Aerys. Except for his children Viserys and Daenerys Targaryen, Aerys' line is extinct; Robert became the new king. He wants Eddard to serve as the king's hand and that their children Joffrey and Sansa marry. Eddard doesn't agree yet. Then there is a feast at which Eddard's brother Benjen, who is part of the night watch, also appears. Jon Schnee explains to Benjen that he would like to become a member, but Benjen thinks he is too young. Late in the evening, Eddard and his wife Catelyn received a message from Catelyn's sister Lysa Arryn, the widow of the late Jon Arryn. He was poisoned by the Lannisters.

In the city of Pentos on the continent of Essos, Viserys Targaryen, who lived in exile, married his sister Daenerys to Khal Drogo, a tribal chief of the Dothraki, a nomadic equestrian people, with the help of the Magister Illyrio Mopatis. Viserys wants to invade Westeros with the force of Khal Drogo and recapture his father's kingdom. At the wedding Daenerys receives books as gifts from the knight Jorah Mormont, who comes from Westeros but has lived with the Dothraki for some time, and valuable, petrified dragon eggs from Illyrio.

Bran Stark happened to be an eyewitness to a sexual act between Queen Cersei and her brother Jaime. Jaime Bran pushes off a tower in the castle.

2 2 The royal road The Kingsroad Apr 24, 2011 Nov 9, 2011 Tim Van Patten David Benioff & DB Weiss 2.20 million
In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen learns the Dothraki customs and tries to assert himself. According to their maidservants, the dragons have long been extinct, only the petrified eggs remain. Jorah Mormont and Viserys accompany them and the Dothraki. Jorah admits that she sold slaves in Westeros and was banished for it.

In Winterfell, Bran is believed to have fallen from the tower while climbing. He is alive but in a coma. Tyrion wants his nephew Joffrey to offer his condolences to the Starks on the fate of Bran. When he refuses, he is beaten by Tyrion. Jon wants to travel to the north wall with his uncle and join the night watch. As a farewell, he gives Arya, who prefers to play with weapons and armor than pursue typical women's activities, a sharp sword. Catelyn doesn't leave Bran's side. When Jon wants to say goodbye to him, she sends him out of the room. She doesn't want Jon, whom Ned fathered with another, unknown woman, around her. Only Ned knows who Jon’s mother is, but does not reveal her identity.

Ned Stark has promised to accompany the king to the capital and is taking his two daughters Arya and Sansa (who is to marry Prince Joffrey) with him on the journey south on the so-called Royal Route. During the trip, she received news of Daenerys' and Khal Drogo's marriage: Now it is speculated that they might attack Westeros.

Jon, his uncle Benjen and Tyrion Lannister travel to the wall; the latter to visit them. Captured criminals who were forcibly recruited for the night watch join the group along the way. In conversation between Tyrion and Jon it becomes clear that Tyrion's father served as the king's hand for 20 years and that this king was killed by Jaime Lannister.

An assassin appears in Winterfell who wants to kill Bran with a knife. He slightly injures Catelyn and is eventually killed by Brans Wolf. Catelyn then examines the tower Bran was pushed off. Inside, she finds long blond hair that Cersei lost there - the only person with such hair. Catelyn believes that Bran was pushed off the tower because of his excellent climbing skills, and shares her findings with a small group of confidants - including their son Robb and Theon Greyjoy. Since the assassin was carrying a very valuable dagger, he was probably paid for by the Lannisters to kill Bran. Catelyn then travels to the capital to speak to her husband.

Sansa and Joffrey are taking a walk in the capital during a rest stop and meet Sansa's sister Arya, who playfully fights with sticks with the butcher's son. When Joffrey attacks and injures the butcher's son with his sharp sword, Arya hits him with her stick, whereupon Joffrey hits Arya wildly, but without hitting her. When she stumbles and can no longer evade, Arya's wolf bites Joffrey in the arm, whereupon the latter drops his sword, which Arya throws into the nearby river. She scares away her wolf to prevent him from being killed as punishment. The butcher's son is chased to death by the bloodhound. Queen Cersei insists that Sansa's Wolf be killed because he is too dangerous. When Eddard kills him, Bran wakes up in Winterfell.

3 3 Lord Snow Lord Snow May 1, 2011 Nov 16, 2011 Brian Kirk David Benioff & DB Weiss 2.44 million
Ned Stark arrives in the capital King's Landing and meets Jaime Lannister in the throne room. He mentions how the mad King Aerys had Eddard's father and brother burned alive in this very room. When he later thrust his sword in the back of the king, it felt like justice. Eddard attends the small council meeting. Members include Renly Baratheon, a younger brother of the king, Lord Varys, who runs the realm's espionage network, Grand Maester Pycelle, who served the previous king, and Lord Petyr Baelish, who is in charge of finances. There Eddard learns that the crown is in debt with 6 million gold dragons, although the crazy king left behind filled treasuries.

In the conversation between Cersei and Joffrey, they both think the Starks are their enemies. Jaime tells Cersei that if necessary, he will kill all of the Starks to keep their affair a secret. Bran are told stories about years of winter and the "long night" in which many people die from the cold, which Robb dismisses as fictional horror stories. Arya and Sansa fall out over the incident with the wolf. Arya wants to kill Joffrey. Eddard learns that she has a sharp sword and that she would like to learn how to use it and allows her to keep it. Later she was tutored by the sword master Syrio Forel.

Meanwhile, Jon Schnee reaches the wall, where he is received unkindly during the training. In the first exercise, thanks to his training on Winterfell, he can defeat all the other recruits, but hits them bloody and breaks your nose, which makes him unpopular right from the start. He is mocked by the instructor as "Lord Snow". Later he gives the other recruits tips on how to fight. The Commander of the Night's Watch is called Jeor Mormont and is Jorah's father. Jorah Mormont and Maester Aemon ask Tyrion to persuade the King or Queen to send more men, weapons, and provisions to the Night's Watch. Otherwise they would not be able to repel the attacks of the wildlings north of the wall in the approaching winter. In addition, reports of (allegedly long-extinct) white walkers increased. Tyrion also talks to Yoren, a member of the Night's Watch, who travels the kingdom to recruit recruits. Tyrion believes that the wildlings north of the wall are no different from the people south of it, only that they were unlucky enough to have been on the wrong side when the wall was built. Benjen, the first border guard, wants to look around north of the wall.

At the same time, Catelyn Stark travels south to track down the Bran assassin and meets her childhood friend Petyr Baelish in King's Landing. He names the "gnome" Tyrion as the last owner of the assassin dagger. Baelish lost the dagger in a bet to Tyrion. Although Catelyn tried to get to Eddard unnoticed, Varys informed Baelish of her arrival. Varys also knows about the attempted murder of Bran and the dagger. Eddard is later led to the brothel by Baelish, where they decide that Baelish and Eddard seek further evidence of Tyrion's guilt while Catelyn returns to Winterfell. King Robert exchanges old war stories with Barristan Selmy, one of his Royal Guards, and Jaime Lannister. Jaime, the "regicide", reports how he killed the mad king and while he was dying he only shouted the same thing as he had for hours: "Burn them all". Meanwhile, the king's squire, Lancel Lannister, tries to accommodate his wishes for more and more wine.

In Essos, on the road to Vaes Dothrak, the capital of the Dothraki, there is a dispute between Daenerys and Viserys, whereby the latter has to realize that he has no influence or validity with the Dothraki, while Daenerys is already able to give the Khalasar - the Dothraki Horde - give orders. Jorah Mormont now addresses her as "Khaleesi" (Queen). When he learns that she is pregnant, he leaves the Dothraki, but wants to return soon.

4th 4th Cripples, bastards and broken things Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things May 8, 2011 Nov 23, 2011 Brian Kirk Bryan Cogman 2.45 million
Bran dreams of a three-eyed raven, which he follows through the castle (in a dream he can walk!). When he wakes up, Theon sends him to Robb; the gigantic stable boy, Hodor, was given the task of carrying Bran, as he did more often from now on. Tyrion reaches Winterfell with Yoren and is met by Robb. He gives Bran blueprints for a special saddle that would enable him to ride despite his paralyzed legs. When Robb asked why he was so helpful to Bran, Tyrion replied that there was plenty of room in his heart for "cripples, bastards and broken things." In various conversations it is mentioned that a few years ago, during a revolt against King Robert, the Greyjoy attacked the Lannister fleet and burned it. The Lannisters later conquered the Greyjoy homeland with the Starks, with Theon's brothers dying. Theon had to go to Winterfell as a ward, which he was not allowed to leave. It is also mentioned that the dragons were once ridden by brave men, that the Iron Throne was "forged" by the dragons of Aegon the Conqueror, who conquered Westeros, and that they became smaller and smaller over the generations until the last dragons were skulls the size of a cat's skull.

At the night watch, Samwell "Sam" Tarly arrives, a fat, scared, young man. The instructor Allisar Thorn tells the other recruits to hit him in order to provoke him to fight. During the night, Jon convinces the recruits not to torture Sam anymore, whereupon Thorn reports of the dangers and hardships beyond the wall. He himself rode out once to fight Manke Rayder, the "King beyond the Wall", but got into an unexpectedly early winter with his comrades and was snowed in the wilderness for six months. When they ran out of supplies, they even began to eat their dead so as not to starve. When Sam is on guard with Jon on the wall, Sam tells that his noble father forced him to go to the night watch and renounce his inheritance, otherwise Sam will have an "accident".

The Dothraki horde arrives in Vaes Dothrak. Jorah Mormont is already with them again. It is learned that he was banished by Ned Stark because of the slave trade, which he said he entered into because he had no money and an expensive wife who is now "in another place, with another man". Meanwhile, Viserys complains heavily about the Dothraki, because they still don't want to attack his enemies in Westeros. When Daenerys gives him the typical simple leather clothes of the Dothraki for the upcoming feast, Viserys gets angry and hits her because he considers these clothes to be below his dignity. She strikes back what she has never dared to do before. Daenerys sees herself more and more as a self-confident leader of the Dothraki and less as the little sister of Viserys. You and Jorah Mormont agree that Viserys would be a bad king and general. Both would like to return home.

In a council meeting, the captain of the city watch, Janos Slynt, asks for more men during the upcoming tournament in honor of Eddard as the new hand of the king. Eddard then speaks to Grand Maester Pycelle in private about the death of Jon Arryn. According to Pycelle, it was a quick, brief illness. He cannot rule out poison as the "weapon of women, cowards and eunuchs" and points out that Lord Varys is a eunuch. Jon Arryn's last words, according to Pycelle, were "The seeds are strong," which he kept repeating. In addition, Jon Arryn had asked Pycelle for an ancestral register with the noble families of Westeros the night before his death. Eddard borrows the register from Pycelle. Shortly before his own quarters he meets Arya, who wants to improve her sword fighting technique and therefore practices standing on one leg for a long time and plans to hunt cats. She rejects life as a lady.

The next day, Petyr Baelish speaks to Eddard about the book, which makes it clear that Pycelle passed on the content of their conversation. Baelish explains to Eddard that there are many ordinary people in King's Landing who make money as spies for the Queen, Varys or himself, and that he should not trust anyone. Baelish also explains that Jon's squire Hugh was knighted immediately after his death for no reason - at least none that had nothing to do with Jon's death. Hugh, however, is not very talkative and dies at the tournament fighting against Gregor Clegane, known as the mountain, the bloodhound's brother.

Eddard visits the blacksmith, whom Jon Arryn frequently visited before his death, and discovers that his apprentice Gendry is a bastard of King Robert.

Tyrion Lannister and Yoren arrive at a rest house. Since all beds are occupied, Tyrion pays Bronn money to use his bed. Catelyn Stark is in the same rest house. Tyrion speaks to her, whereupon she has him captured; she wants to take him to Winterfell.

5 5 The wolf and the lion The Wolf and the Lion May 15, 2011 Nov 30, 2011 Brian Kirk David Benioff & DB Weiss 2.58 million
In an interview with Eddard, King Robert explains that he thinks his squire Lancel Lannister is an idiot and only endures him at the insistence of his wife Cersei. She, in turn, only married at Jon Arryn's insistence, in order to win over the Lannisters. In the conversation of the royal couple it becomes clear that both have no interest in their marriage, but that this keeps the kingdom together with its numerous arguing nobles. Jorah Mormont's news of Daenerys Targaryen's pregnancy reaches the king. This consists of a council meeting on an assassination attempt to prevent the Dothraki invasion. He falls out with Eddard, who resigns his position as the hand of the king, because he wants nothing to do with an assassination attempt on a pregnant woman, while the other council members are for it.

Tyrion, Catelyn and Bronn travel eastwards towards Hohenehr to see Catelyn's sister Lysa, who reigns there after the death of Jon Arryn. They are attacked by hill tribes along the way, but can repel the attack. Tyrion kills an enemy in battle. At Hohenehr he is accused by Lysa of killing Jon Arryn. He is imprisoned.

Arya chases cats in the capital and ends up in a remote dungeon where the dragon skulls are kept. There she overheard a conversation between Varys and Magister Illyrio Mopatis from Pentos. The conversation is cryptic, rich in images, and the connections are not entirely clear. Among other things, it says "Wolf and lion will go to each other's throats" - an allusion to the heraldic animals of the Starks (wolf) and the Lannisters (lion). An assassination attempt on Eddard is mentioned as well as the planned invasion of the Dothraki, for which Illyrio and Varys would need more time. Arya tells her father about it, but he doesn't believe her. Yoren asks Eddard to search the dungeons for possible recruits for the Night's Watch and informs him that Catelyn has captured Tyrion.

Varys mentions a special deadly poison to Eddard that leaves no traces and causes symptoms like those of an illness. Jon Arryn was poisoned with it, presumably by his squire at the time, the late Ser Hugh. However, it is unclear on whose behalf he acted. In any case, the king was also in danger.

In the tournament, Loras Tyrell, known as the Knight of Flowers, defeats the mountain. Loras and Renly Baratheon have a sexual relationship. Loras encourages Renly to become king himself. Loras' father would support him financially.

Eddard wants to leave the capital with his daughters as quickly as possible. Petyr Baelish persuades him to meet the last person Jon Arryn spoke to before he died. He leads Eddard into the Baelish brothel and introduces him to a prostitute who has a daughter from Robert. Because of the capture of Tyrion, Ned Stark and Jaime Lannister face an open confrontation, with Ned being wounded by a Lannister soldier.

6th 6th A golden crown A golden crown May 22, 2011 Dec 7, 2011 Daniel Minahan David Benioff, DB Weiss & Jane Espenson 2.44 million
King Robert urges Eddard to persuade his wife, Catelyn, to release Tyrion. In addition, Eddard should again serve as his hand, otherwise the king would appoint Jaime Lannister. This is not charged for the attack on Eddard, since Robert depends on the benevolence of Jaime's father Tywin.

Daenerys lays one of the dragon eggs on hot coals and picks it up again after a while. When a servant takes the egg from her, she burns her fingers on it, while Daenerys's are unharmed. As an initiation rite among the Dothraki, she eats the raw heart of a stallion. Her unborn son is said to be "the stallion who climbs the world" and gather all the Dothraki tribes to conquer Westeros. Viserys tries to steal the precious dragon eggs to buy an army, but is stopped by Jorah Mormont. During the festivities that followed, Viserys rioted and asked Khal Drogo to give him the crown he deserved, otherwise he would cut the unborn child out of Daenerys' body. Khal Drogo pours molten gold over his head, giving Viserys the crown he deserves. Daenerys comments, "He was not a dragon. Fire cannot kill a dragon." (The Targaryen heraldic animal is a dragon.)

Tyrion insists on a one-on-one arbitration award. Bronn agrees to fight for him and wins, after which Tyrion is released. Bran has the dream with the three-eyed raven again and gets his special saddle with which he can now ride. He is attacked by a group of wildlings, who are killed by Theon except for the wildling girl Osha, who is captured.

Farmers tell Eddard of murder, rape, and pillage in the river lands from which Catelyn originated. The bandits, who are led by the "mountain" Gregor Clegane, left behind fish, the heraldic animal of the Tullys, who rule in the river lands. Eddard decides in his office as the hand of the king to remove the mountain from all its offices and lands and instructs Berric Dondario to arrest the mountain. In addition, Tywin Lannister, who is the liege lord of the mountain, should be in the capital within 14 days or be charged with high treason.

From the ancestral register borrowed from Pycelle, Eddard takes that the Baratheons have always had black hair. The Lannisters are blond! The alleged children of Robert and Cersei, all blond, are in fact the children of Jaime and Cersei.

7th 7th Win or die You Win or You Die May 29, 2011 Dec 14, 2011 Daniel Minahan David Benioff & DB Weiss 2.40 million
Because of the capture of Tyrion by Catelyn Stark and to strengthen the position of his house, Tywin Lannister goes to war. Ned confronts Cersei that their children's father is Jaime. Robert returns from the hunt seriously injured. Before he dies, he names Ned Lord Protector. Ned seeks help from Petyr Baelish, who assures him that the city guard will support him. Renly Baratheon, who previously unsuccessfully asked Ned Stark for help in asserting his own claim to the throne, flees the capital with his secret lover Loras Tyrell. When Ned hands over Queen Roberts' edict, according to which “the rightful heir” should only rule after he has reached the age of majority, a confrontation ensues. At the wall, Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly take their oath. Jon learns that his uncle Benjen is missing. In Vaes Dothrak there is an unsuccessful attempted assassination (with poisoned wine) on Daenerys, whereupon Khal Drogo decides to invade Westeros.

Ned Stark is a prisoner in the Hofburg dungeon and is accused of treason against King Joffrey. Arya Stark escaped, but Sansa Stark is a royal hostage; all other members of the strong household were murdered. Sansa is forced to write a letter to her brother Robb who is supposed to come to King's Landing to take the feudal oath. However, he decides to rally his troops to free Ned. He also has to assert himself against his feudal people, including Jon Umber. After hearing about the situation, Catelyn Stark asks Lysa Arryn in vain for military help and then travels to see Robb. Tyrion Lannister meets members of the wild tribes living there in the mountains of the valley of Arryn; by promising a rich reward, he persuades her to accompany him to his father, Tywin. Jon Snow, shocked by the news about his father, and the men of the Night's Watch in the meantime learn that the “White Walkers” are real. Jon can destroy a dead person resuscitated by the hikers by fire. After a victory by the Dothraki over the "Lambmen", Daenerys Targaryen experiences what fate awaits the defeated survivors, and then stands up for them. Among these protégés Daenerys is the witch Mirri Maz Duur. This treats Khal Drogo's wound that he suffered during a duel.

Robb Stark leads a strong army south after Catelyn wins the support of the devious Lord Walder Frey, who demands that Robb marry one of his daughters. Tywin Lannister beats the Starks, putting his son Tyrion, who now has a young woman named Shae as a lover, in mortal danger. But the attack was just a ruse Robbs, who in the meantime has defeated and captured Jaime Lannister with his main army. Ned Stark is promised that he can save his life if he confesses his alleged betrayal and keeps the secret of Cersei's children a secret. Reluctantly, to protect his family, he agrees, but Joffrey does not keep to the agreement. After Ned publicly confesses his alleged betrayal, Joffrey has him beheaded, with Arya present in the square. At the wall, Jon Snow is torn between his oath to the Night Watch and loyalty to his family. In the east, the injured Khal Drogo's condition deteriorates dramatically, and his entourage threatens to break up. Daenerys desperately tries to save Drogo's life and even allows the opaque witch Mirri Maz Duur to use forbidden blood magic.
10 10 Fire and blood Fire and Blood June 19, 2011 Jan. 4, 2012 Alan Taylor David Benioff & DB Weiss 3.04 million
News of Ned's execution reaches Winterfell and Robb, who is still in the riverside with his army. He and his mother are downcast but also determined to retaliate. The lords gathered there finally proclaim Robb king of the north, which he accepts. In addition, since Stannis and Renly Baratheon each claim the Iron Throne, there are now four kings in the realm. With the help of Yoren, a member of the Night's Watch, Arya manages to escape from the capital, where the traumatized Sansa is still held hostage and no longer has any illusions about Joffrey's sadistic character. Tywin Lannister is shocked at the news of Jaime's capture. Peace with the Starks seems impossible after Ned's execution; he therefore sends Tyrion to King's Landing as his deputy. At the wall, Jon is prevented by his friends from deserting, and Lord Commander Mormont decides to send a force to the area north of the wall. In the east, Daenerys, who has lost her unborn child, ends the suffering of Khal Drogo, whom most of his men have already left. Mirri Maz Duur is killed during the cremation. The next day, Jorah and the others who were present at the funeral saw the effects of a magic that was believed to be lost: they kneel in awe.

Examples of differences from the book

Winter is coming (1.01):

  • In the prologue, young Will survived the encounter with the others , only to be executed later as a deserter. In the book, this is the older Gared.
  • In the series, Eddard has to convince his wife Catelyn that he wants to go to King's Landing with the king's hand. In the book it is exactly the opposite.

The wolf and the lion (1.05)

  • In the series, Loras Tyrell and Renly Baratheon are explicitly portrayed as a homosexual couple. In the book, however, this is only indicated subtly. So (also in the later books) the close relationship between Loras Tyrell and Renly Baratheon is emphasized, whereby several people make quite clear allusions or statements. Martin himself said that the implied homosexuality was in line with his intention.
  • In the series, the son of Jon and Lysa is Arryn Robin instead of Robert as in the book, as he should not be confused with Robb Stark and Robert Baratheon.

Baelor (1.09):

  • In the series, Tyrion is hit by a hammer of his own people before the Battle of the Green Arm and is passed out for the entire battle. In the book, Tyrion fights in battle.
  • When Maester Aemon reveals his parentage, a change in the Targaryen family tree becomes clear in the original English version: in the books he is the great-great-uncle of Daenerys and Viserys, but in the series he is their great-uncle. In the German translation, however, the book version was used again.

Fire and blood (1.10)

  • In the series, Daenerys emerges from the flames with her head of hair; in the book her hair is completely burned too.
