The action immediately follows the end of the second season. In the land beyond the wall, most of the men on the Night's Watch were killed by the “White Walkers”. Samwell Tarly has struggled to survive and Lord Commander Mormont decides to lead the few survivors to the wall to warn the realm of the new threat. Jon Schnee has apparently joined the Wildlings. He is received in the camp by Manke Rayder, the "King beyond the Wall", suspicious and hostile, but Rayder accepts him.

In the seven kingdoms, the Lannisters seem to rule without restriction. Stannis Baratheon is crushed. Ser Davos, who barely survived the battle in the Black Water Bay, realizes that Stannis only trusts Melisandre. After a failed assassination attempt on her, Davos is thrown into dungeon. Tywin Lannister rules as the new hand of King Joffrey and makes it clear to Tyrion that he has nothing to expect from him and that he continues to despise him. Tyrion's position at court is extremely endangered as he no longer has any power and fears another attack on his life. But Cersei’s position of power at the court is also crumbling, since her father actually rules King’s Landing and Joffrey cannot be controlled by her. In addition, the powerful House of Tyrell is now gaining more and more influence. Margaery Tyrell is supposed to marry Joffrey to reinforce the new alliance, but the young woman has her own political goals and makes herself popular in the capital through her welfare work. Sansa Stark is still a hostage of the Lannisters, but Lord Baelish gives her hope of an eventual escape.

In the riverside, Robb Stark and his army reached Harrenhal fortress, where a Northman massacre was committed. Robb Stark has won every battle so far, but the war is unfavorable for him. Robb's relationship with his mother Catelyn is still tense due to Jaime's flight, as some lords resent Catelyn.

In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen reaches Slave Bay and the city of Astapor, where elite soldiers are trained. She plans to acquire them and with her help and the dragons to conquer Westeros, but she is also disgusted by the training of the soldiers who remain slaves. An attack is carried out on Daenerys by the sorcerers of Qarth, but Ser Barristan Selmy, formerly a member of the Royal Guard under the Targaryens and Robert, is able to prevent it. He offers his services to Daenerys.

In King's Landing, Sansa Stark meets Lady Olenna Tyrell, mother of Mace Tyrell and grandmother of Margaery. Olenna questions Sansa about Joffrey and, after some hesitation, Sansa admits that the king is a monster. Margaery uses this knowledge to win Joffrey over.

In the Riverside, Robb Stark received word that Winterfell had been burned down by the Ironmen and that Catelyn's father, Lord Hoster Tully, had died, whereupon he marched to Schnellwasser. Lord Karstark tells Robb that he no longer believes in the victory of the north; they would have lost the war the day Robb married Talisa. Catelyn herself is deeply dejected by the news from the north and from rapid water, especially since she does not know whether Bran and Rickon are still alive.

Meanwhile, Bran and Rickon are on their way to the wall. They meet Jojen and Meera Reed, whose father was a loyal follower of Lord Eddard. Like Bran, Jojen has special talents, such as the ability to penetrate the mind of an animal and control it; such a person is known as a "warg".

Arya, Gendry and “hot pie” meet Thoros of Myr, who, along with other men, belongs to the “brotherhood without banners”, which fights for no lord but for the people of the realm. The Brotherhood has also captured Sandor Clegane, who recognizes Arya. In the meantime, Brienne von Tarth and Jaime Lannister make a detour towards the capital, but meet Bolton soldiers, followers of the Starks. Theon Greyjoy is still alive, but is held captive by strangers and brutally tortured.

In the land beyond the Wall, the survivors of the Night's Watch are still on the run towards the Wall, while Rayder and the Wildlings are also moving south.

23 3 The way of chastisement Walk of Punishment Apr 14, 2013 2nd June 2013 David Benioff David Benioff & DB Weiss 4.72 million
Robb Stark and Catelyn attend the funeral of host Tully in Schnellwasser (originally “Riverrun”). Also present is Catelyn's uncle Brynden Tully, who fell out with Hoster years ago. There is an argument between Robb and Edmure Tully, Catelyn's younger brother and now Lord of Schnellwasser. Edmure has won an insignificant victory over the Lannisters, but disregarded the instructions of Robb, who is now also Edmure's king.

In the capital, Petyr Baelish is assigned by Tywin to travel to Lysa Arryn and bring the Valley of Arryn to the Lannister side. Tyrion is appointed the new master of the coin, which he is not very enthusiastic about. Tyrion soon discovers that Baelish has borrowed large sums and that the crown is heavily in debt. In the riverside, Arya and Gendry accompany the brotherhood while “hot pie” separates from them. Meanwhile, Jaime Lannister and Brienne are prisoners of Locke, who is in the service of Lord Roose Bolton. Brienne is said to be raped by the soldiers, but Jaime convinces Locke that unharmed she is worth more than what Brienne saves. Jaime makes Locke another offer: the north has all but lost the war and the Lannisters have more men and a lot of gold; for a later reward he should now release Jaime. But Locke does not agree and cuts off Jaime's right hand.

In the north, a stranger helps Theon (allegedly on behalf of Theon's sister) to escape and soon comes to his aid again. In the land beyond the wall, Manke Rayder is planning a surprise attack on the wall in order to be able to move further south with the wildlings. Meanwhile, the survivors of the Night's Watch arrive at Craster's yard.

In Astapor, Ser Jorah Mormont urges Daenerys Targaryen to buy the slave soldiers trained there (the "Immaculate"). Ser Barristan Selmy, however, reminds Daenerys of her eldest brother Rhaegar, the "last dragon" for whom his soldiers fought out of conviction. However, she decides to buy all 8000 soldiers and all men in training. As payment, she offers one of her dragons, which Mormont and Selmy are horrified about, since a dragon is worth more than an entire army.

Gendry learns from Melisandre that although he is illegitimate, he is of royal origin.

Bran and his group travel north while Jon Snow, Ygritte, and other wildlings struggled to climb the wall. The Warg Orell confesses his love for Ygritte and that he distrusts Jon. Jon explains to Ygritte that the attack on the Seven Kingdoms is a pointless undertaking: In the past centuries the wildlings have tried six times to invade the kingdoms in large numbers, and each time they have been crushed. Edmure marries Roslin Frey, the atmosphere is lively. Robb and Talisa are in a good mood, Edmure has taken a liking to his beautiful bride and Lord Roose Bolton tells Catelyn that he has also married a frey daughter, a fat girl, because Lord Frey has weighed her weight in silver. Edmure and Roslin are escorted to the wedding night. The doors of the hall are locked and the musicians play The Rain of Castamaer , a traditional Lannister song about Tywin Lannister's victory over the powerful but rebellious House of Regen von Castamaer several years ago. Catelyn notices that Lord Bolton is wearing chain mail under his festive attire and tries to warn Robb, but it is too late. Lord Frey gives the sign for the later so called red wedding .

30th 10 Mhysa Mhysa June 9, 2013 July 21, 2013 David Nutter David Benioff & DB Weiss 5.39 million
At the twins , the remains of the Stark troops are massacred, and Robb Stark's head is replaced by the severed head of his direwolf. News of the “red wedding” arrives in the capital. Joffrey is thrilled and wants Robb Stark's head to be presented to Sansa at his own wedding. Tyrion protects Sansa and warns Joffrey that he must be careful as kings die quickly these days. Tywin rebukes the angry Joffrey for saying that nobody is really king when he always has to remind everyone. Joffrey then accuses Tywin of only hiding in the fight against the Targaryens while Robert won the war. Tyrion realizes that Tywin must have been the mastermind behind the "Red Wedding", as Walder Frey would never have dared to do such an act himself without support. The north would never forget this. Sansa is deeply affected by the news and turns away from Tyrion. Finally Jaime Lannister arrives in King's Landing.

With the twins, Walder Frey, now also Lord von Schnellwasser, has a conversation with Lord Roose Bolton, the new Guardian of the North. Bolton is concerned that Brynden Tully escaped, but Lord Walder sees Brynden as no threat. It is now also revealed that Theon was a prisoner of House Bolton all along and that his torturer was Ramsay Snow, Lord Bolton's bastard son. Ramsay forces Theon to stop using his own name and just call himself “stinker”. Balon Greyjoy receives a message from Ramsay with Theon's cut limb. He asks the iron men to leave the north. Otherwise they would be hunted and skinned alive; They would also get Theon back piece by piece. Lord Balon does not want to go into it, but his daughter Asha decides to find and save her brother. Arya continues to travel through the riverlands with Sandor Clegane. You meet a group of free soldiers. Arya kills one of them in cold blood, Sandor kills the others.

In the far north, Ygritte catches up with Jon Snow and shoots three arrows at him, but Jon escapes wounded. Bran tells the Reeds and Hodor the story of the rat cook: a long time ago a cook from the Night's Watch took revenge on a king by killing the king's son and serving him as a meal for the king. The gods turned the cook into a giant rat that could only feed on its young; a punishment not for murder but for breaking sacred hospitality. Bran's group meets Sam and Goldie. Sam reports how he killed the "White Walker". They part ways when Bran and his companions set off through a secret entrance into the land beyond the wall, while Sam and Goldie travel to the Night's Watch. Jon Snow arrives there and Sam takes care of him.

On Drachenstein, Ser Davos is now the hand of King Stannis Baratheon. He warns Stannis not to use Melisandre's powers as this is wrong. Davos later frees Gendry and takes him off the island. He gives Stannis the message to the night watch, which warns of the dangers in the far north. Melisandre is concerned about this too; Compared to this threat, the "war of the five kings" meant nothing. In Essos, Daenerys Targaryen gives a speech to the slaves of Yunkais and asks them to decide for themselves for freedom, that choice is theirs only. The assembled slaves then call Daenerys Mhysa , Old Ghiscari for "mother". Daenerys goes into the crowd, where she is enthusiastically celebrated.

Examples of differences from the book

Valar Dohaeris (3.01)

  • Robb Stark himself did not march to Harrenhal in the book, which Roose Bolton had previously taken.
  • Barristan Selmy's identity is only revealed at the end of the book A Storm of Swords . His companion, a former arena fighter named Der Starke Belwas , is completely absent from the series.
  • The role of Margaery Tyrell is expanded in the series (also in the later episodes) compared to the book scroll.

Dark Wings, Dark Words (3.02)

  • Jojen and Meera Reet appear earlier in the books.
  • Theon's fate is not revealed until later in the books, but there, too, he was repeatedly tortured (by the Boltons).

The way of chastisement (3.03)

  • Both Edmure and Brynden Tully appear in the first book ( A Game of Thrones ), while they are only now being introduced in the series.
  • Jaime Lannister is captured in the books by mercenary Vargo Hoat, in the series of Locke, a new character and follower of House Bolton.

And now his watch is over (3.04)

  • Several scenes (Varys and Lady Olenna; Joffrey and Margaery) do not appear in the book.

Kissed by fire (3.05)

  • In the series, Sansa (ep.3.04) and later Cersei are supposed to be married to Loras Tyrell, unlike in the book, where Loras is a member of the King's Guard and Sansa is therefore supposed to marry Willas Tyrell.
  • Robb Stark does not plan to attack Casterlystein in the books.
  • In the books, Ser Barristan Selmy was a member of the royal council, so he knew Jorah Mormont was disclosing information about Daenerys.

The rise (3.06)

  • In the books, Melisandre does not appear with the Brotherhood, nor does Gendry take with him. The role that Gendry then played with Stannis, Melisandre and Davos until his liberation is played in the book by a recognized illegitimate son Roberts named Edric Sturm.
  • The wildlings who are supposed to cross the wall are mentioned in the book by Styr and Jarl, in the series by Orell and Tormund Giant Death. Orell is only mentioned in retrospect in the book, as he is immediately killed by Jon the first time he meets.

The Second Born (3.08)

  • In the books, Mero and Daario Naharis are members of different mercenary troops before Yunkai, who both defected to Daenerys. In the series, Daario runs over to Daenerys after killing his Captain Mero. In both cases, however, Daario kills his two co-commanders.
  • In the books, Gendry was never abducted to Drachenstein. He eventually works as a blacksmith for the Brotherhood without Banners (also applies to the episode Mhysa ).

The rain of Castamaer (3.09)

  • In the book, Robb's wife (Jeyne Westerling there) survived the “red wedding”, especially since she was not present and was never pregnant. In the book, Catelyn does not kill Lord Frey's wife, but one of his grandchildren.
  • In the book, Daenerys conquers Yunkai after his troops are defeated. The “commando action” in the series, however, is based on the conquest of Meereen described later in the book.

Mhysa (3.10)

  • In the book, Brynden Tully holds Schnellwasser Castle, while in the series he was a guest at the "red wedding" but was able to escape.
  • In the book, Asha Greyjoy makes no attempt to rescue Theon.
