Vanessa Taylor (born September 24, 1970 in Boulder , Colorado ) is an American screenwriter and television producer . In 2018 she was nominated for an Oscar for her script for the film Shape of Water starring Guillermo del Toro .

Career

Taylor had her first television engagement in the late 1990s for the television series Amor - Mitten ins Herz , where she was involved as a writer on the last episode of the first season, which was no longer broadcast due to the early cancellation of the series. She was also involved as a writer on the 2000 series Gideon's Crossing , after which she was hired not only as a writer but also as a co-producer for the first season of the spy series Alias - The Agent, developed by JJ Abrams . Until 2007 she worked on several other series as a writer and producer and developed the format Jack & Bobby for The WB together with Greg Berlanti , Steve Cohen and Brad Meltzer . The drama series was canceled after one season.

Taylor then worked on her first stand-alone screenplay for a feature film about an older couple's marital problems. Since she was not married herself, she orientated herself on her divorced parents and read advice on the subject. After several revisions, especially the end of the film, the script was sent to 25 producers through its manager Guymon Casady . Although no one took on the project, the script garnered enough attention to be featured on the 2008 Black List , which featured the most popular unfilmed scripts of the year. This listing succeeded in handing Taylor's script to producer Todd Black , who in turn brought in Meryl Streep . The script was eventually made into a film by director David Frankel , with Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carell starring alongside Streep, and it was released in 2012 with the title Like the First Time ( Hope Springs ).

After reading the scripts for the Game of Thrones pilot, she was able to get in touch with Guymon Casady, who also represented the showrunner of the series David Benioff , and was hired as a co-producer for the second season of the series . As one of the few women on the Game of Thrones production team, she wrote the scripts for the episodes The Garden of Bones and Old and New Gods . She also accompanied the production of the third season as producer and writer of the episode Dark Wings, Dark Words , after which she left series production to devote herself to other projects and since the long stays abroad during the filming were no longer compatible with her private life. So she wrote the screenplay for The Determination - Divergent , an adaptation of the novel The Determination by Veronica Roth with Evan Daugherty . When Divergent hit theaters in 2014, Taylor was contacted by director and producer Guillermo del Toro . In 2012 he wrote a draft of the script for the film Shape of Water - The Whispering of Water , which could now go into production with the support of Fox Searchlight Pictures . Del Toro, who became aware of her through her involvement in Game of Thrones , worked with Taylor on the final script. For her work on The Shape of Water , Taylor and Guillermo del Toro have been nominated for numerous film awards, including the Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay .

In 2017, it was announced that Disney had brought in Taylor on the production of Aladdin to help revise the script of director Guy Ritchie and John August . The live version of the animated cartoon of the same name from 1992 is scheduled to open in cinemas in 2019.

In 2018, Taylor was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars annually.
