David Frankel (born April 2, 1959 in New York City , New York ) is an American film director , producer and screenwriter . He and Barry Jossen won an Oscar for the short film Dear Diary .

Life

Frankel was born the son of Pulitzer Prize winner Max Frankel . After graduating from Harvard University , he began his career in 1986 as a surveillance producer on the Ellen Burstyn Show. In 1989 he worked as a producer, director and screenwriter on the sitcom Doctor Doctor . In the following year, his first feature film script was filmed with No Baby on Board .

Miami Rhaposdy, starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Antonio Banderas , made his feature film debut as a director in 1995. In 1997 he was nominated for the short film Dear Diary with the Oscar awarded. He was awarded an Emmy for his work on the television series Band of Brothers and was nominated by the Writers Guild of America for his script for the series Rome . He had other significant directorial work in the series Sex and the City and Entourage .

In 2006 Frankel shot the comedy The Devil Wears Prada , which was nominated for two Academy Awards, starring Meryl Streep , followed in 2008 by the comedy Marley & Ich with Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston .
