From the Earth to the Moon (German: From the Earth to the Moon ) is a twelve-American documentary series of is pay-TV -Senders HBO in 1998. It depicts the events of the manned space program of the United States during the Apollo program of NASA in the 1960s and early 1970s. It was broadcast in the United States from April 5 to May 10, 1998 in double episodes.

The series is largely based on Andrew Chaikin's book A Man on the Moon and has nothing to do with the novel of the same title by Jules Verne . The history of the Apollo program is described in great detail using excellent special effects, suitable background music and numerous contemporary witnesses. Tom Hanks leads through the individual episodes as moderator and appears in the last episode as an assistant to Georges Méliès .

The series offers an important piece of contemporary history that not only addresses technical achievements, but also illuminates their political and human backgrounds. Accordingly, the individual Apollo missions are presented from different angles.

action

It all begins in 1957, when the Soviet Sputnik satellite orbited the earth for the first time. Four years later the Russians made their first manned space flight and Yuri Gagarin was the first cosmonaut in space , which came as a shock to the world power USA, which was in the middle of the Cold War with the Soviet Union and believed in its technical superiority. This is how US President John F. Kennedy formulated the ambitious goal of overtaking the Russians in the “Space Race” by the end of the 1960s. The first person to set foot on the moon should definitely be an American. The Gemini and Apollo programs are started with enormous effort . Wernher von Braun , who designed the V2 rockets for Germany during World War II , developed the Saturn launcher for NASA. In July 1969 the time had finally come: Neil Armstrong , Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin took off aboard the Apollo 11 to step onto Earth's satellite for the first time. Before that, there were also tragedies like the Apollo 1 disaster, which is presented from the perspective of the subsequent investigation by NASA and the US Congress. The continuation of the program is shown, which was reinforced with the historic first manned flight to the moon by Apollo 8. The selection and training of the first crew as well as the story of the 12-second moon landing by Alan Bean , the pilot of the lunar module, are also covered. For example, the astronauts were trained in advance to select suitable rock samples to be collected through field experience, rather than the boring classroom lectures that NASA uses. The four landing crew members of Apollo 15 (David Scott, James Irwin, Richard F. Gordon, Jr. and Schmitt) were taken to the southwestern desert, while the pilots Alfred Worden and Vance D. Brand for the altitude detection of geological features over Hawaii have been trained. One episode is dedicated to the dangerous flight of Apollo 13, another shows the Apollo program from the wives' perspective.

background

Tom Hanks' passion for space was sparked by his role as astronaut Jim Lovell in Ron Howard's space drama " Apollo 13 ". Together with Howard, he set out to tell the full story of American space travel, from the Sputnik shock to the end of the Apollo program in 1972. The two had an enormous budget of 68 million dollars available for their ambitious project. In addition to Tom Hanks himself, well-known names such as Jon Turteltaub , Frank Marshall , Jonathan Mostow and the actress Sally Field are part of the renowned directing team.

The Apollo 13 mission is shown from the media point of view, while the astronauts' point of view is shown in the film Apollo 13 by the producers Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, who are also involved here . This is done with great effort and a mix of contemporary documentary recordings and newly shot game scenes.

Most of the shooting took place in the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville (Florida) , in the airship hangars at the former naval base in Tustin (California) and in Orlando (Florida) . To simulate the gravity of the moon's surface, helium-filled weather balloons were attached to the actors' backs, reducing their earth-bound weights to one sixth.

The original series was recorded with an aspect ratio of 1.33: 1. As a DVD in a 4-disc set, the 1.78: 1 aspect ratio was preferred, which is tailored to wide-screen flat-screen televisions.

The series was broadcast in the US by HBO and premiered in Germany .
