Max Wright

George Edward Maxwell Wright (born August 2, 1943 in Detroit , Michigan - † June 26, 2019 in Hermosa Beach , California ) was an American actor . He became known to a wide audience through the role of the family man William "Willie" Tanner in the television series Alf .

Life

Max Wright began his acting career in the 1960s with regional theaters , for example in the original production of Howard Sackler's drama The Great White Hope , with which he also debuted on Broadway in 1968 . In the following decades he was seen several times on Broadway and became a respected theater actor; his appearance as Pawel Lebedev in Anton Chekhov's Ivanov in 1997 even earned him a nomination for the Tony Award . From the late 1970s, he took on supporting roles in films such as Behind the Spotlight by Bob Fosse , Warren Beattys Reds and Soul Man .

In The Specialists On the Move , Wright played the financial manager of the Humanidyne Laboratory from 1985 , whose aim was to get its scientists to research something sensible, but gave in to them again and again when they were pursuing an unconventional project. Wright was best known for the role of William "Willie" Tanner from the television series Alf , which was produced between 1986 and 1990. In it he played the good family man who often comes into conflict with the non-conformist alien Alf , but still hides him in his house. The German voice actor Niels Clausnitzer lent the US actor his voice for the series .

After the end of Alf , he was occasionally seen in the cinema, for example in a film adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream and in the literary film Snow Falling on Cedars . He also played the small role of a museum employee in Shadow and the Curse of Khan . In addition, he continued to appear in series and received a role in the Stephen King film adaptation of The Stand . He also played the boss and owner of the Central Perk in some episodes of the first and second season of the US series Friends . As a series actor, Wright was again seen in a major supporting role in the US television series Norm (at the beginning also: The Norm Show ). He had his last appearance in front of the camera in 2005 in the television film Back to Norm .

Private life

In 1995 Wright developed cancer. In 2000 and 2003 he was arrested for driving alcohol.

Wright had been married to his wife Linda since 1965 and had a son and daughter with her. He lived in an apartment in Hermosa Beach, California.

His wife died in November 2017. After her death, he met a German male nurse and was in a relationship with him until his death.

Max Wright died on June 26, 2019 at the age of 75 of complications from his cancer.
