occupation

Snow That Falls On Cedars is an American film from 1999 . The director Scott Hicks used it to film the 1994 novel of the same name by David Guterson . When the fisherman Kazuo Miyamoto is charged with killing an American fisherman, Ishmael Chambers, played by Ethan Hawke , who is a reporter at the trial, is confronted with his past .

action

1954: The fisherman Carl Heine is found drowned on the coast of the US state Washington . Since the dead man has a head injury, murder cannot be ruled out, and Heine's Japanese colleague Kazuo Miyamoto is arrested.

Reporter Ishmael Chambers is supposed to cover the trial and meets his childhood sweetheart Hatsue Imada, the defendant's wife. Chambers could help solve the crime, but his reborn feelings for Hatsue put him in a dilemma. In the end he agreed to help, but had to fight against the resentment that still existed after the Second World War on both sides. Chambers can prove, however, that Carl Heine's boat was hit by the bow wave of another ship and that he fell off the ship and drowned as a result. Kazuo Miyamoto is thus innocent and is acquitted.

The main storyline, however, is the internment of the Japanese minority living on the west coast. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor , numerous Japanese citizens were interned. The film aims to bring back this often forgotten part of history.

“In the equal coexistence of the present and the past, the film evokes pain and beauty at the same time by telling the tragedy of this unique love beyond romantic clichés. Exceptionally carefully staged and played impressively. "
