TV Today (in the spelling of the TV TODAY publisher ) is a bi-weekly German television magazine . It was first published in 1994 by Magazin-Verlag am Fleetrand (MVF) in Hamburg , which was founded in the early 1990s as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Gruner + Jahr publishing house and has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Munich-based Hubert Burda Media Group since 2005 . Since 2006 the magazine has been published under license by TV Spielfilm Verlag GmbH, which also belongs to the Burda Group. The sold circulation is 180,544 copies, a decrease of 88.9 percent since 1998.

concept

The daily TV program is shown and commented on on up to 13 pages per day. On the specialty and feature film pages, the programs are critically rated, described in detail by the editors. Background reports, interviews and portraits of the current program period appear in the so-called shell section. In the middle of the magazine, up to August 2013, the extra magazine kids TV provided information about children's television; it has now been integrated into the five pages of the program that are now expanded every day. As is customary with magazines of this type, every commented film in the television program is rated using a four-part point system. There are also several glosses and a satire page.

history

TV Today appeared for the first time at the end of 1994 and competed with the already existing and similarly designed and positioned magazines TV Spielfilm and TV Movie . The oldest fortnightly TV magazine TV Spielfilm was founded by the Hamburg publishing group Milchstrasse at the end of 1990, TV Movie shortly afterwards. TV Today sold well under a million copies in its first year, while TV Spielfilm and TV Movie had a circulation of around 2 million each. TV Today had 30,000 subscribers at the time . In 1998/99, TV Today briefly reached its highest circulation, with an average of around 1.4 million copies sold.

The publishing house had around 140 full-time employees at times. The founding editor-in-chief was Andreas Schmidt, who started his career at the Federal Border Police and worked for TV Movie before founding TV Today.

With the publication of new fortnightly TV magazines, the traditional fortnightly magazines, which TV Today was now a part, lost buyers. For the first time since 1995, TV Today's circulation slipped below a million copies on a quarterly average (March 2001: 988,667 copies). With many advertisers' budgets shrinking, TV Today's advertising business suffered . From 2002 the publisher began to cut staff. On June 28, 1995, the Internet service TV Today Online was launched. In the mid 1990s, more magazines were added to the TV Today family, such as the lifestyle computer magazine Konr @ d , the supplement TV magazine FF , Stern TV magazine and the Internet lifestyle magazine Online Today . Konr @ d was discontinued in 1999, Online Today in spring 2002. After the Internet bubble burst , the TV Today network, which designed the magazine's website, was greatly reduced in terms of staff.

After many years of efforts, the parent company Gruner + Jahr was able to find a buyer for TV Today in 2004 who accepted the terms of the takeover: Socially acceptable severance payments for the around 70 employees affected by the layoffs, the magazine continues to be printed in the Gruner + Jahr printing house in Itzehoe, to be maintained as an independent title until an officially undisclosed date. The purchase price was 15 million euros and the buyer was Hans-Georg Barlach , a grandson of the sculptor Ernst Barlach , who largely received the 15 million euros required for the purchase from Burda. The exact business arrangements were later disclosed, and Burda gradually took over all rights to TV Today . In the autumn of 2004, the overall editorial staff, reduced to around 35 people, moved to the publishing house of the Hamburger Morgenpost (Mopo) in Bahrenfeld , a Hamburg district east of Hamburg-Altona .

TV Today in the present

TV Today is reliant on the services of third parties with its smaller staff. Some sections such as “Auto”, “Travel” and “Games & Technology” are designed in-house, but the texts are supplied by freelance authors. The listing, i.e. the production of the television program columns, was outsourced to an external service provider in 2002.

TV Today had sales of approximately 496,000 copies per issue in the fourth quarter of 2009. The magazine has been a joint advertising medium with TV Spielfilm since 2006 . Its publisher, the Milchstrasse publishing group, was completely taken over by Hubert Burda Media in 2005 , so that both magazines form a single economic unit, but currently still enjoy journalistic independence. Under the TV Spielfilm plus offer , customers should be able to book an advertisement page in both titles for a price of around 56,000 euros.

In terms of reach, TV Today achieved a value of 3.7 percent, which corresponds to around two million readers. In the summer of 2005 there was even a slight increase. The title is particularly widespread in the eastern federal states. In September 2004 , the former head of the CvD department Mathias Franz-Stavenhagen replaced Michael Hopp as editor-in-chief, who announced in spring 2005 that he was working on a revival of the comic magazine Fix und Foxi . From 2006, TV feature film editor-in-chief Lutz Carstens was also editor-in-chief of TV Today. In 2006 Barlach ended his position as editor.

From March 7, 2008, the premium magazine TV Today Digital appeared with 90 channels on four double pages with the digital offerings of Premiere , Unity Media , Kabel Digital Home and T-Home . This magazine, called the “program catalog”, cost a little more than comparable magazines at a price of 2 euros. The magazine was published in perfect binding and the inside pages were printed on environmentally friendly paper. In 2011 this form was discontinued.

TV Today has the same content and the same reviews as the TV Spielfilm , only the rating system has remained independent (points instead of thumbs).

The online presence of TV Today is one of the most successful TV program websites in Germany with over five million visitors a month (as of 10/09).

In July 2019, Hubert Burda Media announced that the editorial team of TV Spielfilm will be dissolved and the editorial content of TV Spielfilm, TV Today and TV Schlau will be produced by the Funke Mediengruppe from October 2019 .
