David Guterson
David Guterson (born May 4, 1956 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American writer . The son of a criminal defense attorney also worked as an English teacher and journalist for Sports Illustrated and Harper's Magazine .
Guterson made his breakthrough in 1994 with his first novel Snow Falling on Cedars , for which he received the PEN / Faulkner Award and the Swedish Crime Prize , and became known worldwide. The novel was 1999 by Scott Hicks with Ethan Hawke , Sam Shepard , Max von Sydow and Youki Kudoh in the lead roles filmed .
David Guterson lives with his family on Bainbridge Island in Puget Sound west of Seattle.
Guterson is a founding member of the Field's End writers' organization .
