James Robert Rebhorn (born September 1, 1948 in Philadelphia , † March 21, 2014 in South Orange ) was an American actor who appeared in over a hundred television series, films and plays.

Life

Rebhorn was the son of Ardell Frances Rebhorn (née Hoch) and James Harry Rebhorn, an industrial engineer and salesman. He was of German descent and had a sister named Janice Barbara Galbraith. When he was a child, the family moved to Anderson , Indiana ; there he attended Madison Heights High School. After leaving school, the devout Lutheran studied political science at Wittenberg University in Springfield and became a member of the "Lambda Chi Alpha Nu Zeta 624" brotherhood . Rebhorn first experienced acting under the direction of Richard S. Huffman; so he played the leading role in Aristophanes Lysistrata and in Molière's Scapins pranks .

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1970, he moved to the School of the Arts at Columbia University in New York City, which was founded in 1948, and did his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in acting. He was a lifelong member of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and the AMC.

Rebhorn was married to Rebecca Fulton Linn and had two daughters; Emma Rebecca and Hannah Linn.

He died on March 21, 2014 at the age of 65 at his South Orange home of complications from black skin cancer , which he was diagnosed in 1992. He wrote his own obituary before his death.

Career

After his training, he worked in various theaters. In the 1980s he worked a. a. starred in the soap operas Springfield Story , The Doctors and Search for Tomorrow .

In the science fiction film Independence Day he played the Defense Nimzicki and in the Highsmith - filming The Talented Mr. Ripley an entrepreneur. He showed his comedic talent in the 2000 comedy film Meine Bride, Her Father and I alongside Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro as doctor Dr. Larry Banks.

The last episode of the fourth season of the television series Homeland was dedicated to him. In the plot, a funeral service is also held in honor of his role in the series, even if Rebhorn did not appear again this season.
