Anamorphic is a 2007 American psychological thriller directed by Henry Miller. The film premiered on September 21, 2007 at the Milwaukee International Film Festival.

action

Five years ago, Detective Aubray convicted a serial killer whose trademark was an elaborately designed crime scene. A similar case calls the police officer again on the scene. Is the whole thing an act of imitation or did he get the wrong person back then?

An antique throne chair is stolen from Aubray's apartment. The thief leaves a tape that reproduces a recording from an interrogation of Aubray. With the help of an art dealer friend, he finds his chair in an art gallery. Aubray considers the name of the artist named there to be an anagram, and by thinking for several days he actually finds the solution: anamorphosis - a painting technique in which the motif can only be seen from a certain or unusual angle. This is exactly the way in which the perpetrator creates his macabre works of art. The truth becomes visible through the point of view, so Aubray interprets it, but keeps this knowledge to himself. Aubray also recognizes templates for the artistic crime scene design of the past few days in two other exhibits. DNA traces that are already in the database of the New York police can be saved on a sculpture. The suspect's house is searched. Apart from numerous objects of modern art, nobody can be found here.

Some of the victims come from Aubray's private or professional environment. His close friend Sandy, who actually managed to renounce alcohol four years ago, is made docile by the perpetrator with alcohol, then tattooed on his back and finally murdered. Aubray finds the two in the previously searched atelier of the perpetrator and also has to pay for this with his life. At the same time, his colleague Carl also discovers the anamorphosis of the works of art during a coffee break in the office by running a mirrored coffee cup over the crime scene photos. Carl drives to the studio and can hunt down the murderer.

background

The shooting took place from January 9th to February 21st, 2006 in New York City , among other places in the Pace University .

The special effects were realized by Richard Edlund . Singer Debbie Harry made a cameo as Aubray's neighbor.

In addition to the eponymous anamorphosis , the perpetrator used two other performing arts techniques, the camera obscura and pantography .

criticism

"Thanks to leading actor Willem Dafoe [...], this serial killer hunt clearly stands out from the seemingly inexhaustible heap of obscure DVD premieres, but the leisurely staging slows down many elements of tension."

- TV feature film

The lexicon of international films judged that the production was a "[well] worn, optically restrained, atmospherically very dark psychological thriller" that contained some "convincing [...] moments [...] ] ”. The equipment of the film is perfect. "The erratic script and the illogical connections" would have negative effects on the tension.
