Richard Edlund (born December 6, 1940 in Fargo , North Dakota , USA ) is an American specialist in visual effects in films.

Life

At the age of 15, his high school photos were reprinted in the Los Angeles Examiner . In the US Navy he deepened his photography skills at the US Naval Photographic School. His interest in film was aroused during a two-year stay in Japan . He began producing training films for the Navy and attended USC film school on his return to the United States . Before moving to Hollywood , he was a photographer for rock bands and LP covers, as well as developing a portable guitar amp called Pignose.

In 1975 he was one of the co-founders of George Lucas ' legendary effects company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). In 1977, under John Dykstra's leadership, he was the responsible effects photographer for Star Wars . During the eight years at ILM he supervised a. a. The special effects in The Empire Strikes Back , Return of the Jedi , Battlestar Galactica , Raiders of the Lost Ark and Poltergeist .

In 1983 Edlund left ILM and started his own company, Boss Films Studios . In addition to various TV spots, the effects of Ghostbusters were created here , 2010: The year we make contact , Die Hard and Ghost - Message from Sam . During this time, he also did a lot of development work in his old adopted home of Japan and in China , supported by the Eastman Kodak company . After Ghost things got a little quieter around Edlund. He then directed special effects at Alien³ , Species , Multiplicity and Air Force One .
