action

Jack Reed is a Chicago police officer . He's investigating the Mafia wherever he can. But he can't do much because she is protected by lawyer Alan Masters, who has brought the police under control on her behalf, including his superior Michael Corbitt. Alan Master is married to Dianne Masters, a nice young woman whom he abuses because he wants her to be a decoration rather than a person. He's cheating on her too, and she doesn't know what he's really doing until after they marry.

One day she wants to get rid of him because of his mistreatment, but he finds out and out of jealousy and fear that she could reveal his activities to Reed, with whom she is friendly, he kills her with the help of Corbitt. Corbitt then stows her body in her car and makes the car disappear into a nearby river. It was only after six months that the car and with it the body was found by chance during another investigation by Reed, when he had the river combed because of an insurance fraud involving cars that were thrown into this river for precisely this purpose.

The murder investigation leads nowhere because Corbitt controls the investigation. Only after public pressure is this investigation transferred to Jack Reed. He quickly discovers that Alan Masters must have committed the murder. He contacts a friend of hers, Nina Sloane, Corbitt's wife, to clarify the case, but she refuses to help him for fear she might end up just like them, but tells him that Alan controls the police and Corbitt she therefore failed the investigation. In addition, she gives him information in the right direction before breaking off contact with him.

When Reed realizes how much Alan controls the police and local authorities, he decides to contact the United States Department of Justice , which is also investigating the local Mafia. They team up and manage to force a corrupt judge who knows everything about everything, who helped Alan with his business and hindered Reed's investigation, to testify. Alan Masters and Corbitt are arrested. However, the judge commits suicide when he realizes what he has done, but Nina, who is informed that Corbitt was also involved in the murder and receives confirmation of it, decides to testify in his stead for her protection. After all, Corbitt also testifies against Alan in order to protect himself from Alan.

Alan Masters is found guilty of all charges. Unable to be convicted of murder in federal court, he is sentenced under anti- mafia laws in the United States, the RICO laws. He gets 40 years imprisonment for the crime, while Corbitt gets 20 years imprisonment. The mafia boss Alan worked for and who knew everything about everything dies before he can be charged. Nina disappears from the scene for her own protection and Reed continues to work as a police officer for the city of Chicago.
