history

Dumes is one of the smallest communes in the department. During the Middle Ages it was a fief of the de Navailles family. At the end of the 19th century there was a factory for the production of building lime and one for the production of interlocking tiles in Dumes, which no longer exist today. Henri de Navailles was mayor of the municipality in the first half of the 20th century and promoted the development of agricultural sciences in Dumes.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 265 in the first half of the 19th century. As a result, the size of the community fell to around 110 inhabitants by the 1980s, with short recovery phases. At the turn of the millennium there was a short but strong population growth. which nearly doubled the size of the community. However, this trend has slowed recently.

Saint-Pierre-de-Dumes castle

The original castle was built in 1289 by the landlord Guitard d'Arambès with special permission from King Edward I of England . In the course of the 17th century it was almost completely demolished on the orders of Cardinal Richelieu . On September 10, 1664, Richelieu's troops damaged the property due to a revolt against the levied Gabelle , a salt tax . According to one story, the land of the estate was plowed with a silver plow to demonstrate royal power. The castle had previously suffered during the Fronde period between 1648 and 1653. In the course of the 19th century, today's castle was completely rebuilt. However, some remnants of the earlier building have remained, such as a former building wing and wall remains that have been integrated into the modern building. The castle is privately owned and not open to the public.
