Castelnau-Tursan is a French commune of 193 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Chalosse Tursan (until 2015: canton of Geaune ).

The name is derived from the Latin castellum novum ( German  new castle ).

The inhabitants are called Castelnausiens and Castelnausiennes .

Castelnau-Tursan is located about 30 kilometers southeast of Mont-de-Marsan in the Tursan region of the historic province of Gascon on the southeastern edge of the department.

history

Castelnau was probably founded during the 9th or 10th century. The landlord Raymond-Bernard de Castelnau is mentioned in the records from 1023. Pierre de Castelnau was chamberlain to the French kings Charles VII and Louis XI. Numerous other members of the family have distinguished themselves in their long history primarily through military service. This also applies to the occurrence during the Hundred Years War . The ruling Castelnau fought with the French troops in front of Bergerac in 1344 , but when Charles V and Olivier Du Guesclin attacked the English from 1368-1369, he fought on the English side.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a high of 600 by the first half of the 19th century. As a result, the size of the community decreased with short recovery phases to around 180 inhabitants by the beginning of the 21st century, before a moderate growth phase began.
