Biscarrosse ( Occitan Biscarròssa ) is a French municipality with 14,182 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The small town is located about 80 km southwest of Bordeaux in the Pays de Born in Gascony . It is divided into the districts of Biscarrosse Bourg (Ville), Biscarrosse Lac and Biscarrosse Plage.
history
Since the beginning of aviation, the waters around Biscarrosse have been the base of seaplanes. The Toulouse-based aircraft company Latécoère operated a final assembly hall for its Latécoère 631 flying boat on the northern edge of the southern lake . The flying boats, which were dismantled into their main sections, were partly transported by low loaders on the same country roads from Toulouse to Biscarrosse as the A380 in the opposite direction decades later .
The Hourtiquets flying boat base was built southwest of the Latécoère factory in 1940 and is now in a restricted military area (see next section). During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe Naval Reconnaissance Group 129 used them between summer 1943 and 1944; it was equipped with BV 222 and BV 138 . A museum in Biscarrosse is a reminder of sea aviation.
Missile launch base
Near Biscarrosse, at latitude 44 ° 27 'north and longitude 01 ° 15' west, there is the DGA Essais de missiles , a test site for the French armed forces for missiles . Civilian rockets for exploring the high atmosphere are also launched from there. On the northern edge of the restricted area, directly south of Biscarrosse Plage, is the barracks of the 17th groupe d'artillerie of the land forces .
