Outline of Landes

Pays de Born is a small coastal region on the Atlantic coast in the Landes , a department in southwest France in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region . It includes over 19 municipalities. The main cities in the region are the coastal towns of Biscarrosse and Mimizan .

history

The origin of the area known as "Pays de Born" probably goes back to a reorganization of the Duchy of Gascony . In Roman times it belonged to the province of "Gallia Aquitana". The region lay on the north-western border of the province "Aquitania propria", far from centers such as Dax or Eauze . Despite the proximity to the city of Bordeaux , there was a different ethnic composition of the population in the “Pays de Born”, they were not Celts. The people of this region differed in their own languages, customs and traditions. They therefore belong to the ancestors of the Northern Basques and Gascones .

Etymology: Probably the name derives Pays de Born from the Gascon language from: there Borna "border", derived from the Vulgar Latin: Bodina / botina "tree line".
