Sanguinet is a French municipality with 4185 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan , the canton of Grands Lacs and the community association of Grands Lacs, founded in 2002 .

location

Sanguinet is the northernmost municipality in the Landes department. It is located 60 kilometers southwest of Bordeaux on the east bank of the Étang de Cazaux et de Sanguinet , with an area of ​​55 km² the largest inland lake in southwest France. The village of Courneilley belongs to the parish .

history

Remains of human settlement from prehistory and antiquity were found at the lake. Since the eleventh century, the place was a transit station for pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela . At the beginning of the 20th century, swamps were drained in the course of land reclamation and planted with sea pines, which were used for wood and resin extraction . The establishment of the rocket launch site in Biscarrosse and the opening of an airfield in Cazaux opened up new jobs for the population in the 1960s, especially as the sawmills closed. The municipality of Sanguinet has been promoting tourism and services since the 1980s.
