Saint-Sever Abbey

Saint-Sever ( Occitan : Sent Sever ) is a French municipality with 4955 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . Saint-Sever belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and the canton of Chalosse Tursan .

geography

Saint-Sever is 17 kilometers south of Mont-de-Marsan on the Adour and Gabas rivers . Saint-Sever is surrounded by the neighboring communities Aurice and Bas-Mauco in the north, Benquet and Saint-Maurice-sur-Adour in the northeast, Montgaillard in the east, Montsoué in the southeast, Eyres-Moncube , Audignon and Banos in the south, Montaut in the southwest, Toulouzette in the west and Cauna in the northwest.

The former Route nationale 133 runs through the municipality . Saint-Sever is located on Via Lemovicensis , one of the four historical " Routes of the St. James pilgrims in France ".

history

Originally there was a Roman military camp here. The missionary Severus came here in the early fifth century. He was killed by the resident vandals. The Benedictines first founded a chapel in his memory. The Count of Gascony, William II , founded the Saint-Sever Abbey.

During the revolutionary years (1792–1795) the place was called Mont-Adour .
