Parish Church of Sainte-Eugenie

The church was built on the elevation of a former motte that had been inhabited since the 11th century, at a time when the monastery of Saint-Sever acquired the “villa de Morganis”. This simple church was consecrated to St. John and consisted of a nave , which was built with small masonry from pebbles in an ear pattern. Two side chapels already formed a transept at that time. The transept and nave did not have a vault . The eastern part of the nave with two narrow windows with indented lintels and the transept up to a height of three quarters of the walls have been preserved from this original building . The church undoubtedly underwent extensive restoration following partial destruction and looting by Protestant troops in 1569. Its appearance was completely changed in several construction phases between 1831 and 1902. The three-walled apse , which is narrower compared to the nave , the sacristy north of the choir and a baptistery were rebuilt. The old bell tower was demolished in 1899, and two Romanesque Christ monograms were discovered during the work . The current bell tower was rebuilt in 1901 and 1902 by the entrepreneur Descours according to plans by the architect V. Séron. At the same time, the nave was extended to the west by one to three bays . Modifications around 1980 included the demolition of the small baptistery, the redesign of the windows and the removal of the coverings from the inner walls. The ceiling of the nave is made of plaster in the shape of a keel arch . The side chapels have a barrel vault , the choir a groin vault . The bell tower is crowned with an octagonal helmet and pyramid-shaped ridge turrets at the corners. Today the church is consecrated to St. Eugenia of Rome .

With the exception of a Christ monogram, which probably dates from the 11th century, the church has not preserved any elements from earlier furnishings . The monogram is entered in a round bas-relief and has a diameter of 41 cm. The block on which the relief was modeled is now embedded in the wall of the vestibule. The second monogram that was found when the bell tower was demolished, however, has been lost. All of the previous furniture was replaced by classical elements when the choir was rebuilt and the side chapels were redesigned in 1843 and 1844. Eight stained glass windows from 1870 are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant (1839–1915) from Bayonne , later Bordeaux . One of these windows shows the beheading of the Church's patron saint , Saint Eugenia, in her prison in Rome . Another window shows the Holy Family with Mary with the baby Jesus in her arms, Joseph reading the scriptures and God the Father as a bust in a cloud. The other windows are decorated with colored quatrefoils in front of vegetable decorations in the form of grisaille in the background.
