Bell tower

The church consecrated to John the Evangelist has undoubtedly its origins in the Romanesque and its first construction dates from the end of the 11th or the beginning of the 12th century. In 1569 it was devastated and set on fire by Protestant troops under the leadership of Captain Thoiras during the Huguenot Wars . When peace came the church was partially restored and completely rebuilt between 1770 and 1785. In 1866 the painter Duval from Mont-de-Marsan embellished the choir with his wall paintings . The square apse is made of medium-sized masonry , the rest of the church building is made of quarry stone from limestone . Inside the choir is semicircular with an apse calotte and is bordered by a sacristy in the south . The main nave of the nave opens to the side aisles of equal length with barrel vaults through large arched arcades that rest on square pillars in the west and on rectangular pillars in the east. The north aisle was not added until 1856. A gallery rises in the nave. The western facade is characterized by a front spike with Ionic pilasters and a gable interrupted by an oculus . The bell tower rises to the south next to the church building. The nave has a saddle roof with hollow bricks, the apse with a large dome with a roof turret and bell with a flat tent roof covered, although a helmet was originally intended. The church has been inscribed as a Monument historique since May 11, 2015 .

The church was able to retain some of the furnishings with which it was equipped after the rebuilding in the 18th century, for example the revolving door , the pulpit , a holy water font and three 100 cm statues with the representations of St. Lupus of Troyes , St. John and St. Archangel Michael . Saint Lupus is the patron saint of the parish of Lencouacq. Up until the end of the Second World War , processions took place every year on September 1st to a spring located one kilometer from the center of the community. The saint was invoked for the healing properties of its water for rheumatism and eye diseases. The Archangel Michael is the secondary patron saint of the parish. The furnishings of the choir have changed frequently. The carpenter Flocher from Roquefort created an altar in 1785 for 180 francs, which was replaced by a marble altar in 1831 and erected again before 1887, before it was finally removed at the end of the 19th century and replaced by the current altar. This is made of red marble from the Pyrenees , while the capitals of the small columns of the tabernacle are made of white marble. The semicircular canopy above the altar is eight meters high and 5.60 m wide. Its cornice, with a frieze with a denture and consoles , is supported by six columns. Their shafts are made of bright pink marble from the Pyrenees, the stylobate is made of painted stucco based on pink and green marble, the capitals of the columns are made of gilded stucco. The top is made of painted and gilded wood, as is the halo on the cornice. In the middle of the halo is the heart of Jesus made of gilded copper. According to local tradition, the canopy comes from the former cathedral in Bazas . The retable is completed by an oil painting, a work by the painter Louis-Anselme Longa from Mont-de-Marsan from 1840 or 1850. It shows the crucifixion scene with Mary , Mary Magdalene and the apostle John. Jesus Christ is shown alive at the moment of the invocation of his Father, with his eyes turned to heaven. The aisles were fitted out in the first half of the 19th century. Two glass windows are works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux , which were created in 1904. The Notre-Dame von Buglose and Saint Vincent von Paul are depicted in multi-pass medallions in front of geometric and plant ornaments in the background.

The Commandery was founded in the 12th century by the Santiagoorden to receive pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela . Their ruin is located about 10 km northeast of the center of the municipality. In the 14th century the provision was extended to include the care of the sick and the reception of the poor and the disabled. It changed hands several times and was looted by Protestant troops during the Huguenot Wars. During the French Revolution , it was sold as a national good and most of it was demolished to be used in other buildings in the region.
