Notre-Dame-de-Buglose

The hamlet of Buglose (French for ox tongue ) is a district of Saint-Vincent-de-Paul , a small town in southern France in the Landes department of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region .

Buglose is an important place of pilgrimage and is also called Das Lourdes der Landes .

Origin of name

The place was previously written Berglosse . The current spelling first appeared in the middle of the 17th century. The name is said to have been derived from mooing (French: beuglement ) of the comparatively stubborn ox, the meaning of which is described in the following legend .

history

The canon Labarrère, historian of the place, believes that the beginnings of the cult around the church of Notre-Dame-de-Buglose go back to the 15th century. The church is the center of the village, known among other things for its unique carillon , one of the most beautiful in France. It consists of 60 bells, 40 of which are used while the remaining 20 remain silent to improve the harmony of the bells.

Legend

The following legend is associated with the cult around the church: In order to withdraw it from the passion of the Huguenots , the statue of the Mother of God was hidden during the wars of religion. In 1620, a shepherd who was tending his herd in the area noticed that one of his oxen often wandered away from the herd in a nearby swamp, which was located behind a thick brush. To investigate the matter, he climbed a tree and saw his animal lick a strange figure that was stuck in the mud. What he found there was the 400 kg stone statue of the Virgin Mary with the child . At the request of His Excellency von Sault , the Bishop of Dax , it was decided to move the statue to the Church of Pouy . But soon the oxen for the transport no longer wanted to go any further and simply stopped. This behavior was interpreted as the sign of divine will, namely that the statue should remain in Buglose. As a result, the Chapel of Miracles was built on the site of the former chapel to the source , which now offered protection for the statue.

Building history

The abbot Mauriol had a church built in Buglose worthy of the importance of de Saint-Vincent-de-Paul, which was consecrated in 1750. Around 1850, however, it was replaced by a new church in Romanesque style, which was even more impressive than the previous one and which was completed in 1864. This basilica now houses the famous statue. The so-called Buglose Monastery is located next to the church. It is the former lodging of the Lazarists .
