history

Castelner is one of the highest communes in the department and, on a hill between the valleys of the Luy de France and the Luy de Béarn, offered ideal conditions for early settlement. Numerous artefacts from prehistory have been found in the municipality. Remains of an oppidum from Gallo-Roman times have also been discovered. In 1310, Bernard de Poudenx was the landlord of Castelner. A castle was built around which the village subsequently developed.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 335 by the middle of the 19th century. As a result, the size of the community decreased to around 80 inhabitants with short recovery phases by the 1970s, before moderate growth set in, which has recently shown a downward trend.

Parish Church of Sainte-Catherine

Parish Church of Sainte-Catherine

The parish church of Castelner is dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria . The nave with a length of two bays and the three-walled apse with the same width were built in the 14th or 15th century. The south aisle was added at a later date, in the 17th or 18th centuries. It opens to the nave three round arches made of bricks . A sacristy was built in the extension of the aisle at the end of the 18th or beginning of the 19th century. All the windows in the church were redesigned in the 19th century. The church tower was rebuilt in 1905 by the entrepreneur Auguste Dézert according to plans by the architect F. Dabadie from Hagetmau , whereby individual elements of the previous tower may have been reused. The interior plaster was removed in the 1980s and the masonry can now be seen. The building is made of quarry stones from limestone and ferruginous sandstone , called Garluche , with some stones in the north wall being reused in the construction. The ceilings of the main and side aisles are made of plaster. In the west there is a vestibule to which the bell tower adjoins to the south. A floor slab in the vestibule bears the inscription "Grave of the Claverie d'Augereau family", undoubtedly a former landlord family of Castelner. The bell tower has sound openings on all sides in the form of round arched double windows and an octagonal helmet that is covered with slate.

The only older fixture in the church is the small wooden tabernacle with volutes from the 18th century. Three artistically designed stained glass windows in the choir are works by Mauméjean stained glass from Pau from 1888. They show the motif of the Heart of Jesus as well as St. Joseph with the baby Jesus and Mary .
