Parish Church of Notre-Dame-de-l'Assomption

The church dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary belonged to the archpriesthood of Sault-de-Navailles in the Middle Ages . From the first building, which was erected at the end of the 11th and beginning of the 12th century, there are still individual elements of the semicircular apse , which is secured with buttresses , and two capitals , which are now incorporated into the wall of the cemetery. The capitals presumably once supported the arch of the entrance to the church. One shows demonic animals, the other shows the Archangel Michael killing the dragon.

On the nave , which was rebuilt in the 15th or 15th century, a side aisle with a length of two bays was added on the north side in the 18th century . The bell tower with its sound arcades was built between 1875 and 1877 by the building contractor Bertrière according to plans by the architect Charles Relinger as an extension of the nave. Extensive restorations were carried out in the 20th and 21st centuries. In 1987 and 1988, the plaster inside the apse was removed and in 2004 a new, visible beam structure was installed over the nave. The roof of the church is tiled with the exception of the spire , which is covered with slate .

One stained glass window with the motif of the Annunciation is the work of the glass painter J. Vosch from Montreuil (Département Seine-Saint-Denis ) from 1938. Three other stained glass windows with motifs of the Immaculate Conception , the presentation of the Rosary to St. Dominic and The representation of the Holy Family are works by the glass painter Jacques Leuzy from Moissac ( Tarn-et-Garonne ) from 1954.

The main altar in Rocaille style measures 95 cm in height and 2.44 m in width and is decorated with bas-reliefs . On its front, the heart of Jesus can be seen in a medallion , which is on fire and surmounted by a cross. All around, palm trees and volutes embellish the picture, above which two cherubins are arranged. Rose garlands connect the medallion to the corners of the altar, which are also decorated with cherubins. The dating of the work is not certain, but it should have been created after 1765, when Pope Clement XIII used the motif of the Heart of Jesus . was authorized. The wood of the altar was originally painted, but was stained and waxed in the 1980s.

Four paintings in naive execution are works by the painter F. Zeiller from the neighboring community of Beyries. They date from 1945, 1954 and 1955 and illustrate the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, inspired by a painting by Peter Paul Rubens , the baptism of Jesus , Christ blessing a saint kneeling before him, possibly the Apostle Peter , and Mary with the baby Jesus , a copy of the painting by Leonardo da Vinci that is kept in the Hermitage .

The memorial for the fallen is in Bassercles in the parish church. It is a small plaster sculpture by the sculptor Jean-Charles Desvergnes (1860–1928). A soldier in uniform with folded hands and crossed legs leans against a stele with the list of the soldiers of the community who died in the First World War with their names, their ages, the places of death and the dates of death. Above and behind it a female allegory of great length of victory holds a laurel wreath over the soldier. On the base of the monument there is an additional plaque for three soldiers who died in World War II .
