history

The fortunes of the Middle Ages were quickly determined by the English occupation, which began in the 11th century and ended with the end of the Hundred Years War in 1453. The Huguenot Wars between Protestant and Catholic parties raged in the 16th and 17th centuries. With the reign of the French King Henry IV and the Edict of Nantes of 1598, peace finally returned. Distinctive personalities determined the history of the community. The clergyman Darjou, for example, was pastor of the parish between 1638 and 1681. Another clergyman named Soustrar had an eventful life in the 18th century. He ended up in prison several times, most notably when he refused to take the required oath on the civil constitution of the clergy during the French Revolution . The Batbedat family was one of the most important families in the region during the Ancien Régime . At the end of the 18th century, however, Léonard de Poyanne's granddaughter owned the village. Certain properties were sold as national goods during the French Revolution . The 19th century was marked by the expansion of the cultivation of corn and oak.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 300 in the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased to 155 inhabitants with brief recovery phases until the 1970s, before a moderate growth phase began, which the size raised to a level of around 180 inhabitants.

To the west there is a vestibule and a bell tower with a hood with a polygonal helmet on top , which is covered with slate . The choir is characterized by the wall painting on its vault. In the center of the altarpiece is a 2 m high and 1.80 m wide oil painting from the late 18th or early 19th century. The upper part of the work is a copy of a painting by Titian and depicts Mary's acceptance into heaven . The gilded wood tabernacle is flanked by two praying angels and surmounted by a canopy in the form of a dome. The entire work of the altar with its reredos dates from the 18th century and was re-gilded in 1990. Two life-size statues of Saints Joachim and Joseph were created at the same time and flank the altar in niches.
