Castaignos-Sous Lens is a French municipality with 394 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Dax and the canton of Coteau de Chalosse (until 2015: canton of Amou ).

The origin of the name is not completely clear. Castaignos could be a derivative of the Latin word castanea ( German  chestnut tree ) together with the diminutive -olu . On the other hand, according to a legend, General Agnos of Hannibal's army made a stopover here. He is said to have set up a camp on the hills above the valley of the Luy de France , which is said to have been called castel d'Agnos . The name Souslens, a previous toponym was Souslenx , comes from the Occitan Sou ( German  sun ), a name for a sunny place.

The inhabitants are called Castaignossais and Castaignossaises .

history

In 1831 the municipalities of Castaignos and Souslens merged to form the new municipality of Castaignos-Souslens. They were located between the natural borders of Luy de France and Luy de Béarn, and accordingly they belonged to France or to the Béarn in their history . Only since the reorganization of the territories at the beginning of the French Revolution did Castaignos-Souslens definitely belong to the Landes. The Route nationale 133 , today's Route départementale 933, crosses the municipality. The demarcation line between the occupied and the unoccupied zone in World War II lay exactly on this section of the national road and thus divided the municipality during the German occupation of France . This period therefore left deep marks in the memory of the residents.

Population development

After the merger of the two communities Castaignos and Souslens, around 520 people lived in the new community. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 260 inhabitants with short recovery phases until the 1940s, before a moderate growth phase set in, which continues today.

Until the French Revolution it was under the archpriesthood of Sault-de-Navailles of the diocese of Lescar . Today's church is a new building from the years 1893 to 1896, carried out by the P. Ribeton company according to plans by the architect V. Séron from Saint-Sever . The church was built in Romanesque Revival built style with three naves , by large round arches of bricks are separated based on square supporting pillars of ashlar rest. The main nave is extended by a square choir , which is illuminated through a triplet window . Two sacristies flank the choir. To the west, the square bell tower rises above the entrance to the vestibule. His octagonal helmet is covered with slate . Its windows are arched, the teeth at the corners of the wall and the beveled buttresses are made of stone. The furnishings have been completely furnished in the neo-Romanesque style. The only stained glass window that is artistically designed is in the choir. It is a work by the glass painter Louis-Victor Gesta from Toulouse , which was created around 1900. The heart of Jesus is shown in the middle lancet of the triplet window . The person stands on a plinth with small arcades under a canopy with an eyelash , small towers and buttresses . On the left lancet is the patron saint of the church, St. John the Baptist, with a cross, on the right lancet the Archangel Michael trampling the devil with his feet. The two side lancets are smaller than the middle one. John the Baptist and Saint Michael are depicted in elongated medallions with stylized plant ornaments. The first equipment was largely replaced by wooden furniture in the 1980s. The two bells were re-cast in 1964 and 1986 using the same materials as the previous bells in the new building.
