The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Dax and the canton of Coteau de Chalosse (until 2015: canton of Montfort-en-Chalosse ).

The name is Lórquen in the Gascognischen language . It could be derived from the Spanish lorca ( German settlement ).

The inhabitants are called Lourquennois and Lourquennoises .

geography

Lourquen is located about 20 km east of Dax in the Chalosse region of the historic province of Gascony .

Lourquen is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Laurède
Poyanne Neighboring communities Mugron
Nousse Lahosse

Lourquen is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . One of its tributaries, the Louts , marks the border with the neighboring municipality of Lahosse to the south. The Ruisseau de Chai, a tributary of the Louts, crosses the area of the municipality and flows into the Louts.

history

The proximity to the river Louts probably favored an early settlement. In the course of the 19th century a polished ax from the Neolithic was found to prove this. At the same time remains of a Roman military camp came to light. Between the 12th and 16th centuries Lourquen belonged to the barony of Cauna , which at this time between the English was divided and the French crown. English rule since the 12th century and the Hundred Years War (1337-1453) tore the region in two. The Huguenot Wars in the 16th and 17th centuries brought destruction. The 18th century alone gave the region some stability. The 19th century was marked by the work of the millers, whose water mills were driven by the water of the Louts. The use of a quarry in the 1890s gave the community access to an additional source of income.

Lourquen had a stop on the railway line of the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi , which connected Dax with Mont-de-Marsan . The section between Dax and Saint-Sever was opened on November 10, 1899. Due to a lack of profitability, passenger traffic on the non-electrified, single-track line was discontinued on April 7, 1970, and freight traffic on the largest section of the route on December 9, 1992.

Population development

After records began, the number of inhabitants rose to around 445 by the first half of the 19th century and again to around 430 in the middle of the same century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to 170 inhabitants by the 1990s, with short recovery phases before a moderate growth phase set in, which has recently stagnated again.

Parish Church of Saint Martin

The former parish church from the 10th or 11th century was located on the site of the current cemetery. Several restorations were carried out during the 18th and 19th centuries. In 1857 the bell tower threatened to collapse, in 1879 a report stated that the vault was on the verge of collapse. An ordinance finally prohibited access to the church from July to November 1879. A side aisle and the sacristy were separated in order to offer a temporary space for masses during the construction phase of the new church . In 1881 the old church was torn down and the new church was consecrated a year later. The neo-Gothic style church is dedicated to St. Martin of Tours and has three naves. The two aisles are dedicated to Mary and St. Joseph . The semicircular choir is bordered by two outbuildings. Arched windows on the north, south and west sides let the light fall into the interior. To the west the bell tower rises above the vestibule of the building. It is crowned with a polygonal helmet with dormer windows , which is covered with slate . At its foot is the entrance with a wooden door embedded in a round arch. At the height of the first floor of the tower there is an arched window, an oculus above it and double arched sound openings on each side.
