history
The area was already settled by the Romans in ancient times, who mined bitumen here . It seems that the village was first founded in the 14th century near a lake by monks from Santiago de Compostela . However, the site was difficult to defend and residents moved to the ridges of the surrounding hills. The use of bitumen extended into the 20th century. They served u. a. for paving sidewalks in Paris and for caulking ships. In September 1835 the dismantling employed 18 people. The bitumen was extracted in the open pit until the pits were filled with water. During the Second World War , the German occupation built brick ovens in the pits that can still be seen today. After the war, bitumen production was finally given up. Bastennes also benefited from thermal springs in the municipal area and from extensive viticulture in the 19th century. In addition, were rock salt and iron ore supported in Bastennes. During construction of the dam of the Lac de Houguère a large amount of was mineral aragonite found.
Population development
After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 530 in the first half of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 225 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1990s, before a moderate growth phase began seems to be stagnating recently.

- Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . The first church was probably in the 11th or in the 12th century on the foundations of the chapel built of the former castle. It was almost completely rebuilt between 1757 and 1764, as can be deduced from the year "17 .." (the last two digits are blurred) on the keystone of the arch inside the vestibule. Several windows and entrances were changed or created in the first half of the 19th century, such as the western entrance in neoclassical style or the northern entrance to the vestibule. In 1861 the square bell tower was restored by the building contractor Labrousse according to plans by the architect Ponassé. It is provided with a hood with attached lantern on a hexagonal spacer. Pyramid- shaped roof turrets adorn every outer corner of the tower. The entire roof of the bell tower is covered with slate. The comparatively short nave has a main aisle and a side aisle on the north side of two bays . It is extended by a three-walled apse with a square sacristy on the north side. An oculus in the middle wall in this case is lit the chorus from. A gallery with wooden balusters is located in the front part of the nave. The vestibule, which consists of two rooms connected by a round arch, is built on and partly under the bell tower. In the southern part, a staircase leads to the first floor, the northern part forms the ground floor of the bell tower. Many of the furnishings date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
