Vielle-Saint-Girons is a French commune in the department of Landes of the region Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Dax and the canton of Côte d'Argent .

The municipality has 1305 inhabitants (January 1, 2017) and is particularly characterized by tourism. It has two campsites and the beach town of Saint-Girons-Plage , which only has restaurants and holiday apartments.

geography

Vielle-Saint-Girons is located about 80 km north of Biarritz , just a few kilometers from the Atlantic - beach away. The departmental capital, Mont-de-Marsan, is 75 km away. The area around the municipality is characterized by the hilly landscape of the dunes. Most of the community area is covered by forest.

The municipality of vielle-Saint-Girons is divided into the municipalities of vielle, saint-girons and saint-girons-plage, the latter being inhabited almost exclusively by tourists in summer.

history

Saint-Girons probably goes back to an ancient settlement. In 1932, Saint -Girons was united with the neighboring municipality of Bourg de vielle to form the double municipality of vielle-Saint-Girons. Saint-Girons-Plage did not emerge until the 1970s.

Tourism plays an important role in vielle-Saint-Girons. There are two campsites here ( Campéole Les Tourterelles and Eurosol ). The beach resort of Saint-Girons-Plage also exists as a tourism resort . There are almost exclusively restaurants and shops along a 300 m long road closed to traffic. The beach town is particularly populated by tourists during the holiday season from July to September, as there are also holiday apartments with a view of the sea, as well as restaurants and shops. There is also the naturist resort Arnaoutchot with 10 km of nudist beach. The nearest large supermarkets are in Léon , Lit-et-Mixe and Linxe .

traffic

The D652, the D42 and the D382 run through vielle-Saint-Girons. The D42 leads via Linxe and Castets to the E5 / E70 / A63 to Bordeaux in the north and Biarritz in the south. In addition, the place is directly connected to the sea via a local road towards Saint-Girons-Plage.

There is a bus connection to Dax, 35 km away, which starts three times a day in Saint-Girons-Plage. In Dax there is a connection to the French railway network. There used to be stops for the railroad in vielle and saint-giron, of which almost nothing has survived today.

There is a well-developed network of cycle paths in the area around vielle-Saint-Girons. There is the option of driving to Mimizan in the north and Soustons in the south . The cycle path network is part of the tourist leisure development. Some of the bike paths run on old railway lines. There are also some steeper stretches here when it leads up to the dunes. In some places, however, the cycle paths lead to forest slopes, roads or other forest paths. The bike paths are almost entirely paved.
