history

Argelos was founded on a hill above the valley of the Luy de France. It is located on Via Lemovicensis , one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . In the Middle Ages there was therefore a hospital that no longer exists today , which received and cared for the pilgrims and thus brought about the development of the village.A legend tells that the parish had only one priory for a long time , which is said to have been inhabited by ghost monks.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 580 in the first half of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 215 inhabitants by the 1980s, which is still maintained today.

Attractions

Saint-Barthélémy parish church
  • Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Bartholomew . The first church in the parish was built in the 12th century and demolished in 1875. The current church was built between June 1873 (date of the estimate) and 1876 under the direction of the architect Romain Cazenave. Two capitals of Corinthian columns from the old church are built into the main facade in niches above the entrance. However, they are badly damaged, so that the motifs of the decorations are no longer fully recognizable. The statues of St. Joseph and St. Vincent de Paul are placed on these capitals . Both figures hold a child in their arms, Joseph is the baby Jesus , and Vincent is probably a disadvantaged child. The entrance portal dates from the 19th century. It consists of a double-leaf wooden door with metal reinforcements that also serve as an ornament. A sober tympanum is built over the door , which is only provided with a simple, engraved cross and the year "1875". The nave of the neo-Gothic church offers space for a main aisle and two aisles. It has a four-capped ribbed vault and is extended by an apse and two semicircular apsidioles . These belong to the side chapels that are dedicated to Mary and Joseph. To the west rises a square bell tower , equipped with a helmet that is covered with slate . A large sacristy with an irregular floor plan is attached to the north side of the apse. All corners of the church building and the tower are alternately reinforced with stones and bricks and give the building a special ornament through this two-tone color.
