Soustons is a French town with 7877 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is the capital of the canton of the same name .
geography
Soustons is located in the Forêt des Landes , the largest contiguous wooded area in Western Europe, and consists mainly of pine trees . The region is called Marensin .
Soustons neighbors are Azur in the north and Tosse in the south. The city of Bayonne is about 30 kilometers to the south-west. About 10 kilometers west of the town center is the Atlantic coast , which is called the Côte d'Argent here .
To the northwest of the city is the great lake of Soustons. To the north-west of the lake in the urban forest of Soustons lies the hamlet of Coudère , which belongs to the town, and there is the Latche homestead , where François Mitterrand (1916–1996) lived for several years.

Culture and sights
In a public park on Lake Soustons there is a monument depicting François Mitterrand and his Baltic Labrador Retriever .
Museums
The Musée des Traditions et des Vieux Outils (Museum of Traditions and Old Tools) in the Château de la Pandelle shows 950 exhibits on old craft trades such as the clog maker , the Harzer and the cooper .
Buildings
- The Saint-Pierre church was built from 1863 to 1867 in the neo-Gothic style . The bell tower is 35 meters high and the choir is richly decorated. The church was renovated in 2000.
- The Soustons bullring was built in 1903 and is used for both bullfighting events and concerts .
- The city theater was built in 1933, the facade is kept in the style of Art Deco .
- There is a LORAN- C transmitter at Soustons . He uses a 213 meter high self-radiating mast as a transmitting antenna.
economy
Important industries in Soustons are the timber industry , arable farming , vegetable growing and the breeding of poultry. There is a cork factory and tree nursery on site. Local culinary specialties are pigeon ragout ( salmis de palombe ) and sand wine .

The Alsatian municipality of Huningue in the border triangle France-Switzerland-Germany near Basel is the partner municipality of Soustons.
