geography

Tarnos is the westernmost municipality in the Landes department. It is located on the Côte d'Argent (Silver Coast), north of the mouth of the Adour and thus north of the Labourd , 5 kilometers north of Bayonne , 7.4 kilometers northeast of Anglet and 12 kilometers northeast of Biarritz , between the neighboring communities of Boucau in the southwest and Ondres in the northeast. The municipal area covers 2700 hectares, 75% of which are used for agriculture or are natural, 25% are built on.

history

The place name comes from Gallo-Roman times (52 BC to 486) and consists of the name Tarinus and the Iberian syllable -os , "estate", which means "estate of Tarinus". Tarnos was not mentioned in a document until the 12th century. The fortified church of Tarnos was built in the 12th century and was a commander of the Order of Malta . She was a focal point for pilgrims of the Camino de Santiago , which the Voie de Soulac , an alternative to the Via Turonensis used.

Originally the Adour flowed through the city from south to north. The engineer and architect Louis de Foix (1530 / 1538–1602 / 1604) had a dam built that blocked the Adour in the north, so that the river was led directly into the sea. The new course of the river was inaugurated on October 28, 1578.

In 1855 the Boucau train station was inaugurated, which at that time was still part of Tarnos. In 1857 Boucau became independent. Around 1883 the Forges de l'Adour ironworks were set up, which led to an upswing in Tarnos. Until 1963, the city's economic situation was closely linked to the iron processing industry.
