history
For the derivation of the city name, the municipal office gives three possible variants, of which the two most understandable are mentioned here:
- The name of the city is derived from the Occitan words mar ( sea ) and i ei ( here is or here was ). In fact, the place was once by the sea 12 to 15 million years ago.
- The name is of Latin (Roman) origin: the place is said to have been called Mosconum at that time. It was on the Antonin-Weg ( chemin d'Antonin ) trade route , which connected Bayonne with Bordeaux, and was a trading point for goods in the area. The spelling at that time was Milhescq or Miesq . If you bring this in connection with the Celtic meaning, the result is a central market .
When the journeys from Bayonne to Bordeaux used to take three days, Magescq was an important stopover for several centuries.
