geography

Orx includes the districts of Bel-Air, Claous, Le Tuc and Meunier as well as numerous individual farms. The 11.89 km² municipal area actually forms a peninsula, surrounded to the north, west and south by the approx. 775 hectare Marais d'Orx , a marshland, the largest part of which has been protected as a nature reserve of national rank ( Réserve naturelle nationale ) since 1995 . The marshland is shown on many maps as a closed lake area, but sometimes dries out in periods of low precipitation. Many attempts to drain the land for maize cultivation failed and it was not until the beginning of the 20th century that a polder landscape was established through constant pumping out of the water . The water level of the Marais d'Orx is only two meters above sea level and has no natural runoff. The tributaries are collected in several canals and drained around the swamp via the Boudigau (also called Canal de Ceinture ), which then flows into the Atlantic Ocean in the nearby coastal town of Capbreton . In the 1990s, pumping out the water was no longer economical and it was decided to leave the area to its own devices. The now large areas of water became an important resting place for migratory birds - the main reason for the strict nature conservation regulations. Only the bulges in the northeast and southeast of the Marais d'Orx, which are separated from the open water by road embankments, are used for agriculture today. The municipal area is between 3 and 31 m above sea level and shows a change from arable, meadow and small forest areas.
