Mimizan is a French town with 7018 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of land in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the arrondissement of Mont-de-Marsan and is the capital of the canton of Côte d'Argent . The municipality consists of the districts Mimizan-Bourg and Mimizan-Plage .
geography
Mimizan is a municipality on the Côte Landaise, located on the coast in the Pays de Born. It is also called "the pearl of the Côte d'Argent" and lies on average at 15 m above sea level, about 100 km southwest of Bordeaux . The municipal area covers 114.83 km² and has a population density of 61 inhabitants per km². The district of Mimizan-Plage lies directly on the coast of the Biscay , Mimizan-Bourg is about 4 km inland. The pine forest between the two districts has become smaller and smaller over the years and the two districts are slowly growing together.
history
- Mimizan could have been the Roman town of Segosa.
- In 506 there was a battle between the Visigoths and Christians at Mimizan under the leadership of St. Galactoire, Bishop of Lescar.
- In 982, the Duke of Biscay, Guillaume de Sancho, gave a church to the Benedictine monks of the Abbey of Saint-Sever.
- Between 1889 and 1960 there was a 34 kilometer long railway line Labouheyre - Mimizan-Plage .
Buildings
The bell tower of the Notre-Dame from the 13th century as part of the French Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela since 1998 World Heritage Site of UNESCO . Remains of the former Benedictine monastery church still exist.
