history

The area on the right bank of the Gabas was settled at an early stage. The prehistoric man Pierre Dubalen depicted Iberian inscriptions on a fragment of a silver chalice and on the banner of a chain mail. Several tumuli were discovered, one of which was 20 meters in diameter and contained urns , weapons and jewelry. The settlement was first mentioned in 1070 under the toponym Albaïac . In 1794 the name of the municipality was Aubaignan , from 1801 Aubagnan . In 1457, Esteban de Serres, landlord of Aubagnan, had a castle built around which the village developed. Several landlord families followed, some of which left their mark on French history, such as B. Pierre de Castelnau, a chamberlain to the French King Louis XI.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a level of around 320 by the middle of the 19th century, with a peak of 345. This could be held until the beginning of the 20th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 165 inhabitants with short recovery phases until the 1960s, before a phase of growth began that continues today.

Parish Church of Notre-Dame
  • Parish Church of Notre-Dame . The massive, square with battlements studded bell tower probably dates from the 15th century. It resembles the towers of the churches in Banos and Saint-Lon-les-Mines . It has teeth on the corners, twin arcades on all sides and is covered with a terrace. The machinases have a purely decorative function. The parish church of Aubagnan was restored in 1891 and rebuilt almost entirely in the neo-Romanesque style in 1894 . Decorative buttresses are arranged around the structure. The nave offers space for three naves with five bays , which are separated by large arched arcades . In the upper part, oculi let light fall into the nave, which is extended by a semicircular apse made of ashlar from molasse , shows the elements of an erection in front of the new building and is flanked by two sacristies . The entire interior is covered with a false ribbed vault, which rests on brackets on square pillars in the main nave , on narrow columns in the choir and on brackets on the wall in the aisles. 23 stained glass windows are the work of the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux in 1892. In the rear part of the interior of the church, next to the tomb of Claverie d'Augereau, a landlord of Aubagnan, there are three altars that were erected in the church after the new building. The first altar in the form of a sarcophagus is made of white marble , as is its tabernacle . It dates from the year 1855 and shows an unadorned decor in neoclassical style in contrast to another altar made of white marble, which shows decorations in the form of gold-colored plant and geometric ornaments . A third altar, dedicated to St. Joseph , dates from the first half of the 19th century. It is made of polychrome marble with a tabernacle made of gilded wood. Behind a polychrome embellished statue of Josef the altarpiece of white marble. Many other items of equipment date from the 17th to 20th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Aubagnan Castle. It was built on a strategic location on a ridge above the Gabas valley. Today, however, few traces of the military architecture of the 15th century remain. Nevertheless, the property was able to retain original elements. The extensive building came into the hands of the Pardaillan family at the end of the 18th century . In 1863 it was bought by Albert Boucau, Mayor of Lévignacq . Today the castle is privately owned and not open to the public.
