The inhabitants are called Auriçois and Auriçoises .

The municipality has had the “Three Flowers” award since 2002, awarded by the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (CNVVF) as part of the competition for cities and towns adorned with flowers.

history

Excavations from 1888 revealed traces of a Roman camp and a villa with mosaics , which suggests that an important settlement was on the site in Gallo-Roman times . However, the research has been stopped and there are no more traces of these discoveries. In the 13th century the village had the toponym Urisse . Aurice had the status of a Viscount , whose last landlord disappeared at the end of the 18th century. The record of a pastor of the parish from this period says that all priests took the oath on the civil constitution of the clergy .

Population development

After highs of around 940 inhabitants in the second half of the 19th century, the population shrank to around 540 in the course of several brief recovery phases by the 1960s and 1970s. This was followed by growth to around 660 inhabitants until shortly after the turn of the millennium. In recent times the number of residents has been falling again.

Buildings

Parish Church of Notre-Dame
  • Parish Church of Notre-Dame , It was built in the 16th century, but little of this simple structure is visible today because numerous events over the centuries have made extensive renovations necessary. In 1699 the church was enlarged by two side chapels . In the years 1735 to 1774 the building was raised and extended with a vestibule from which a bell gable protruded. At the end of the work, the big bell was inaugurated with the viscount as godfather and the niece of pastor Dubernet as godmother. The French Revolution had an impact on the parish. All election events took place in the vestibule. The religious celebrations were interrupted in favor of celebrations of the cult of the Supreme Being , presided over by a sworn pastor. The former pastor was imprisoned in Mont-de-Marsan at the same time until the cult was lifted. At that time the church consisted of three bays , an altar made of gilded wood in the choir, a wooden vestibule with a bell gable and probably a porch with a sundial that extended the southern wall; in 1839 the bell gable was restored, but in 1847 it threatened to collapse . A fire worsened the situation in 1853 when a fire destroyed the main altar, which was subsequently replaced by a marble altar . In 1864 work began on enlarging the church. The long building was lengthened and the vestibule widened so that a yoke was added. A bell tower was initially built on two floors with a wooden helmet . The sacristy was added and the cemetery moved. In 1878 two small altars were set up in the side chapels. In 1906 the church finally got its present appearance when the bell tower was raised by one storey. In 1954 a violent storm destroyed the choir , but it was quickly rebuilt. In 1992 another restoration took place. In the choir there is a statue of the Virgin Mary made of waxed wood from the 14th century, which was made by Benedictine monks from Saint-Sever. She is dressed in a cloak and wears a crown adorned with flowers. Mary carries the baby Jesus in her arms, who is holding the globe. The statue is made in a naive style and is reminiscent of the statue of Mary in the abbey church in Maylis . Another statue from the 14th century shows Christ crucified . Both statues have been classified as Monument historique since September 11, 2002 .
Notre-Dame chapel in Lagastet
  • Notre-Dame chapel in Lagastet. The church, built in the 13th century by the barons of Estignols, is the former parish church of Lagastet, a hamlet of the parish south of the center, which was formerly a subsidiary parish of Cauna. Over the centuries the chapel has been redesigned several times. The western main facade has panels on both sides that make the chapel appear wider. The bell tower with its slate- covered helmet is integrated into the facade. At its foot is the simple entrance portal in the shape of a pointed arch . The three archivolts do not have any rods or other decorations. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands in a niche in a niche above the portal. The interior of the church contains a capital of a column of Corinthian order from Gallo-Roman times, which was converted into a holy water font. It is classified as a monument historique , along with a Madonna with baby Jesus from the 18th century, a side altar from the 18th century and a baptismal font from the 15th or 16th century . At the end of the avenue that leads to the chapel there is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Local accounts say that it was set up to prevent the community's springs and wells from drying up. Corresponding processions took place until the beginning of the 20th century .
Source Notre-Dame-des-Pins
  • Source Notre-Dame-des-Pins. From it springs a water that is said to have miraculous powers and helps small children to take their first steps or to care for limping children. For this purpose, the legs were rubbed with a handkerchief soaked in the water and then the used handkerchief was left there. Little by little the adults also visited the miracle spring to relieve rheumatism or leg pain. The spring has two points for drawing water. One is for drinking and is housed in a small house, and the other, intended for ablutions, has the water flowing into a well. Every year on August 15, a procession takes place, in which numerous residents from neighboring communities also take part. The votive offerings next to the fountain bowl, such as the stockings or shoes of children or adults, show that the worship of the spring is still alive today.
  • Estignols Castle. The previous building belonged to Patrick de Spens, descendant of an old Scottish family and an officer in the Scottish Guard of the French King Louis XI. He married the daughter of the landlord Estignols in Saint-Sever in 1466 and settled in Aurice. At the beginning of the 17th century, the family took the side of Henry II de Bourbon , who was in conflict with the monarch Maria de 'Medici . In 1616 the castle was built on the orders of Louis XIII. demolished, but rebuilt a little later. Today's two-story building rises on vaulted cellars. The facade is embellished by corner stones and pilasters made of red brick , which emphasize the yokes with their color. Arched arcades mark the entrance and the two adjacent windows. A control room with a Genoese frieze , which is illuminated by three oculi , protrudes from the roof. Extensive outbuildings are located in the northwest. A sheepfold with mud walls, a poultry house with a dovecote, which is covered by a roof with a fish scale pattern, and a park with rare tree species complete the property. The castle is privately owned and is not open to the public. The facades and roofs of the castle and the outbuildings, as well as the internal staircase with wooden balusters, have been classified as Monument historique since February 14, 1978 .
  • Watermill of Lagastet. The mill, built in the 17th or 18th century, is still in operation today. It is built above the watercourse that flows through large arches under the mill. The mill wheel, which is driven by the water power, is located under one of these arches, which are provided with ashlar . The mill is characterized by the preservation of the old architecture and the quality of its masonry association . Today it is used by the modern Castets mill.
