Castle in the Loubens district

history

The first settlement took place in the 5th century at the height of today's cemetery around a church, of which no remains are visible. In the 10th century the settlement experienced a considerable increase in population and the inhabitants moved to the heights at the foot of the landlord's castle . Hontanx is first mentioned in the writings relating to Bonellus de Fontanellis in 1108. In the same century a new parish church was built in the Monde district, which existed until the middle of the 19th century. The landlord was likely to have a residence in the form of a moth at this time , the village had the status of a Castelnau . The landlord also quickly had a chapel built near his castle, the Saint-Blaise chapel . In 1279 the landlord paid homage to Gaston VII de Moncade, Viscount des Béarn , and the English king. Constance, daughter of the Viscount and Viscountess of Marsan, bought Hontanx in 1298 and thereby strengthened the border with the County of Armagnac. After numerous conflicts between the English and French crowns, a bastide was built. On January 25, 1311 Gaston II , known as the Brave, Viscount des Béarn, and Fortaner de Lescun, now landlord of Hontanx, signed a Paragium treaty for its foundation. The wooden mound castle became a solid stone house and the residents moved from the previous settlement to the new village. This was traditionally built in the form of a chessboard, surrounded by trenches and a fortified city wall. The brick gate, which still exists today, was used as a defense . It was equipped with a weir bay window and a wooden hurdle . Another gate on the opposite side was demolished in 1794 during the French Revolution .

Population development

After a peak in the number of inhabitants of around 1,430 in the second half of the 19th century, the number fell to around 500 in several short recovery phases by the 1970s, before the size of the community increased moderately.

Former city gate and today's bell tower

Parish Church of Saint Martin

The original church, consecrated to Martin von Tours , existed north of the center of the parish until 1860. As it became dilapidated, it was decided to build a new church next to the old city gate, which from then on would serve as a bell tower . The construction of the new church, built in neo-Gothic style, was completed in 1870. The former church was completely demolished, but the cemetery was left in its place. The new church has a single nave , which ends in a semicircular choir . The windows of the nave are designed in pointed arches and alternate with the buttresses that run around the whole church. Above the entrance portal , also in the form of a pointed arch, an oculus lets light into the interior of the church. The former tower of the fortification of the community and today's bell tower has a height of approx. 15 m with a width of 5 m and occupies half of the street. Above the round arch at the foot of the tower, a room once served as a prison. A small building made of shell limestone connects the tower with the church building. The tower has been inscribed as a Monument historique since June 27, 1962 .

Château d'Aon
Saint-Blaise Castle Chapel

Aon Castle

The castle standing on an artificial mound is a permanent house, the origins of which go back to the 13th century. It was first mentioned in the scriptures in 1279. In 1287 the English King Edward I and his entourage were received here. At that time the fortress could still have been made of wood. Finally, at the end of the 13th century, the fortress house was built. The simple wall that surrounds it is made of bricks, like today's castle building. A necessary extension led to the north orientation of the castle chapel instead of the usual eastward orientation. Like many permanent houses, the functions here changed from a building for defense and as a noble residence to a farm, and later to a stable and barn. The castle building has a length of 19 m, a width of 12.5 m and a height of 12.4 m. A building of more recent date and height is added to part of the north facade. The ground floor of the fixed house was used for storage and defense. The light just fell over narrow loopholes in and the entrance was on the south side of the first floor. This was illuminated through larger windows that have been redesigned or now bricked up. Twin windows on the second floor indicated that the landlord lived with his family on this floor. The top floor, however, had no windows. In the period that followed, a large entrance was set up on the ground floor, chimneys were moved, stairs were installed and the interior was redesigned with new wooden partition walls. Almost nothing is left of the original furnishings of the house. One room shows the remains of naive frescoes and an old fireplace. To the west of the castle building, separated by a garden, is the castle chapel, which is dedicated to St. Blaise and whose construction dates from the 11th or 12th century. Originally the building of the chapel was shorter, the two side chapels and the sacristy were added later. The end of the apse runs over seven walls, which gives an indication of the date of its construction. Inside the chapel, remains of frescoes with floral motifs adorn the walls. The vault ribs of the transept rest on sculptured warriors . The facades and the roofs of the castle and its chapel, the remains of the frescoes in the castle and in the chapel have been inscribed as Monument historique since February 29, 1988 . Since 1980 the castle and chapel have been owned by the municipality, which improved the condition of the chapel after it was last used as a granary. Since 1990 the castle has been converted into a guest house with a restaurant.

Chapel in Loubens

Chapel in Loubens

The parish of the Loubens neighborhood of Hontanx was first mentioned in the records towards the end of the 13th century. The small church is dedicated to Maria Magdalena and has been enlarged in the last century. The only remnants from the 13th and 14th centuries are the two buttresses on either side of the entrance. Some of the furnishings come from the church of Saint Michel de Toujouse Blanque , which no longer exists today, and the chapel was also dedicated to the Archangel Michael . Two large glass windows depict the two saints.

In order to ensure good water quality, it is temporarily drained every year. A water mill was first mentioned in 1331 under the Paragium Treaty for the construction of the bastide.
